I also have tried the shock function and it is really more 'surprising' than painful. Try it, you'll like it!

I have this exact unit. It's honestly a shame you didn't try it, the level can be set from 1-99. Honestly anything over 13 would be unnecessary and cruel. However 1 is a barely noticeable pinch, 5 is where is starts to get uncomfortable and 10 is a solid thump 13-14 is where it just turns to ouch, 20+ there is not really much difference up to 99, noticeable yes but it's all just varying levels of pain. If you get it on your skin across a nerve or over a small muscle it will contract, I could sit there with it pressed into my palm just right and set on 1 and waggle my thumb. The more interesting thing about this though is the controller. It's like it's intentionally made to be just barely functional which is a shame cause the hardware is decent. It has a torch which is useful and actually decently bright, but it turns itself off after 30 seconds. It's supposed to be a training tool but it's poor interface makes it slow to access which with dog training needs to be instant. It's possible some design choices are in order to satisfy legal criteria for the maximum number of locations since these are banned in a lot of places, for example not naming the device on the box, but its functionality suffers for it.

You should send it to Big Clive.

You missed the whole point if this was a TENS unit. Those are not painful.

This is where you send it to Big Clive for, ehrm, testing (:

I have that one for my 16 lbs dog and he yelped and did a back flip the first time I used the shock button on 2 even though it feels barely like a bit of static. I only used it because he ran into the road. He hasn't done that since. Now the buzzer works and makes him perk up and pay attention. So the buzzer works alone. When I walk him outside he knows not to leave the yard, when he gets a certain distance I sound the buzzer. So he knows the perimeter he's allowed to run in. Works great. And a decent price. I've also used it on a 50 lb dog and only shocked him one time on the level of 5 and he too now responds to the buzzer alone. Since then I never use the shock even though I have tried it on myself and if feels like the kind of static you'd get from rubbing your foot on a rug. Over 10 is just annoying and unpleasant. But then a dog darting out into the road and being run over by a vehicle is a hell of a lot more uncomfortable, so if it takes zapping him one or two times, I'm not going to lose sleep over it. I love my dogs and want them alive and well.

Electric fences are thousands of volts. And even then I would say they are very unpleasant, rather than painful. Couldn't you have turned it to the minimum setting and worked up? I Would be interested how much you can even feel it?

what if the +ve prong touches the dogs skin but the ground prong is obscured by fur. The path to the ground could b quite shocking.

These are certainly great fun to use on consenting humans, could never agree with their use on animals though 😥

There is good reason why these are outlawed for animal cruelty in many countries. I have only seen them used in dumb drinking games irl.

@@jamescollier3 Actually, that's a really good point! Maybe comparing this to a TENS unit could be an interesting comparison!

@@a531016 I'd guess that these cheap shock collars put out something like what you get from the cheap e-stim boxes sold for non-medical purposes. A three-way comparison between the shock collar, an e-stim box, and an actual TENS unit would really be interesting.
