Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) damage can occur without you knowing it. That’s bad. However, the good news is that with little effort you can prevent it. Duratool has a kit of the most common ESD tools for any electronics workbench. It includes a large mat, grounding cable, wrist strap, ESD-safe cleaner, and a simple electronic tester. Don’t get shocked by ESD; add these simple tools to prevent it: bit.ly/2QHmjue

ESD is the reason JFETs deserve more love.

When connecting the ESD mat to an outlet cover's screw be sure to confirm it is actually grounded with a meter. Sandwiching the lug between a plastic cover and a painted screw could isolate the mat from ground. In my case I had to remove the plate and screw the lug directly to the metal outlet box.

Just admit it, you wish you lived in the uk, with our fancy earthed sockets! Great video James!

Is that why a lot of electronic technicians like to walk barefoot inside their labs?

I have a silicon workmat on top of my esd mat. Am I being stupid, or is this okay? BTW, I love the channel. Thanks

Next video, how can you make it safe if you cant buy esd equipent right away, like me where i live i have wood floor, but my closes outlet with ground is in 2floor but ther is ground in the main`s fuse box around 5-8meters away so... :) also id q-tip ok to use when cleaning areas on pcb instead of paintbrush? :) for thoes that dont beleve in esd: wast 1 or more of fleece clothes and cotten t-shirt box etc when they aredry you can see the cotten t-shirt and boxers gets electroglued to fleece :) the humidity can alsoe effect esd, in norway i uslually only experience it in the dry winter when am going in to the car you get shocked XD. Awesome video as allways :D

You could consider connecting to another item that is earthed / grounded like pipework (which should be grounded where it enters your home). Alternatively you can run a long cheap wire outside an literally bury it in the gound. Which is no far off how some grounding tests are completed. Final option - not to be considered lightly - is not grounding, just equipotential bonding. If you don't have a reference to ground, just make sure all the components are at the same potential so the differences can't build up. This may be an option to connect you, a mat and the parts you are working with together?

@@a531016 1: yes thats what i have thinked on(althoe closed pipe is bathroom so its same distance as Fuse Box) or maby beter with the fuse box ground/earth wire?, is that also ground/earth if i use a wire out my window and maby make a nail out of copper? thank you for reply btw :)

I had a bunch of music-equalizer ICs, and they worked fine. But 2 years later when I needed another one out of the same box (some plastic foam in there), 6 out of 8 were dead. I was using a strap with ground connection but not a mat... Could that be esd related?
@bald_engineer
@bald_engineer 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. Especially if the foam was not conductive foam. "Standard" plastic foam will allow charge to build up as the component's leads rub against it.

You just assume my old house has wiring up to modern code ?... Even if my receptacles did have Earth sockets, you assume it's not a Split-Neutral ??? You should start by advising everybody to have their systems checked out by a licensed electrician first.

I clicked b/c the thumbnail had a banana and supposedly was about ESD. I wanted to see the relation / if you created a shock/discharge using the fruit or if it created a potential or something; particularly b/c in my last job I had a banana near an ESD mat and an older guy started freaking out and sending passive aggressive e-mails about the banana possibly destroying the ESD mat's calibration to the whole company. The video had lots of useful info (that I mostly already knew), but I'm disappointed at the false advertising. :(

Has anyone ever actually ruined an IC or a component because of an accidental ESD?

yep happened to me. I now got a esd wriststrap and usually touch a 230Vplugs ground to be safe before starting to work

Everyone has or will at some point. As I said in the video, ESD damaged components do not always fail immediately. So people do not always associate the failure with an ESD event.

Back in the day I worked in a semiconductor laser lab and we would blow laser driver modules left and right. It was in New England where it's nice and dry, especially in the winter. We eventually ended up using ESD lotion on our wrists to help increase conductivity between our body and the wrist strap. No more blown drivers!

Ram in computer can easly happen with this , if you maby take out the ram for cleaning the computer and you put them back and some how 1 or moe are dead, especially if you maby had touched the contact pins on ram dimms, it often can be esd with knowing it. :)

Early Atari 2600 consoles would be damaged if shocked through controller ports or switches, damaging an IC that would make joystick directions not work. Atari had repair places add foil tape to ground switches and add diodes at controller ports to prevent damage. (Six switch models from 1977 - 1980.)
