Pro Tip: put heat-shrink tube over each jaw on your helping hands to keep from scratching up your PCBs.

Nice tip. I don't think it would be a problem in this particular circuit. But yes, in something different could be a big deal.

Nice Video! Sorry for chiming in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you thought about - Qanayce Wiyulian Equalizer (search on google)? It is a smashing one off guide for unveiling the technique to repair your electronic items minus the normal expense. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my mate after a lifetime of fighting got great results with it.

never thought I'd be watching someone soldering resistors to a PCB at 4am when I went from liberal arts to material science in college.

Could you please show us how the Resistor Substitution Box works in practice?

Suppose you were trying to light an LED, and you know you need a resistor before it, and you want to try different values to see what resistor value will give you the suitable brightness that you desire from the LED. Connect your circuit to the alligator clips where you would normally connect the leads of an individual resistor (polarity doesn't matter, they are still just resistors). Then just use the dials to select different resistor values to see what effect they have on the brightness of the LED.

o.O I never thought of that! I thought of using a pot then just measuring the resistance across it. I like the box gives you discreet values that match your existing resistors, but my meter is probably already on, draining my batteries anyway, and you can just swap the wire on the breadboard to an analogue input on an arduino to measure the resistance, right?

@@Tom-nm6qf Awesome explanation Tom. I had the same question as Corbald. You cleared it up for me.

Nice 'gadget' :) ... I like this series about basic stuff even if i dont really need it :D ... But its very good for people with no or not much knowledge and experience 👌🏻 Keep going on! :)

Your videos are good and your explanations are easy to grasp and understand. It is evident that you all put in a lot of preparation time. I suggest that you list credits for the music. I really like the guitar music in the back ground and would like to buy it on iTunes. What is the name of the song and who is the guitarist ?

Look up 'DIY Resistance Decade Thumbwheel Resistor Adapters' on Tindie. They provide much higher precision and it's a cheaper solution.

how do they make diff resistors to have diff values?
@MAYERMAKES
@MAYERMAKES 6 жыл бұрын
The easiest way is to take wire with a known resistance and spool it until you reach the desired value. Most resistors ger made with coal or metaloxide as resistive element.

Try making sure the person doing the soldering actually knows how to solder eh? Clinch leads, trim, apply heat to the joint, apply solder to the joint (NOT the iron!), remove solder and heat.

No reason to trim before soldering in a non critical application.

@@TheRevolucas Yes, there is. You learn to do it right and then you always do it right. Order of operations and simple changes to technique will see a far superior joint with less chance of dry joints etc. There's no need for clean rooms and all that but to not use proper technique is inexcusable when you purport to know what you're doing and represent a company like element 14
