As a first generation, I understand why of the extra details such as why the fire element gets more flustered and angry because they have a lot of pressure surviving in a new country where they are not always welcomed. 2.) reason why she had to fix the pipes is because it saves money opposed to some other families that have extra money to hire someone to fix it..

After seeing it, I agree that both the marketing let it down, AND the critics missed the mark on. I feel, like Luca, this film was 'lighter" and more slice of life then other animated films, and a s a result just won't have the same "impact" as the more epic stories. BUT if they tried to add larger stakes to it... it'd lose what made it distinct. Luca was meant to be about a boy enjoying his summer vacation in a small Italian town, THIS is about a Rom Com overcoming cultural clashes.

On the topic of animation budget between Spider-verse and Elemental and the audience reception; I think it's very similar to the gaming scene in how a studio would put out this really expensive realistic looking game but no one remembers it compared to a lower budget game but has an actual art style. Because the difference between the two is that Spider-verse is a movie with an art style that people can readily appreciate whereas Elemental is just a tech demo. A very expensive tech demo, but a tech demo nonetheless.

I don’t think that’s a fair comparison. Elemental HAS an art style, it’s very cartoony and there’s a lot going on in how the water and fire is constantly moving and fluid and it does a lot of very creative things with its world. Spider Verse is of course the most innovative animation of the decade and changed the game. I’m glad it did, but I don’t think elemental is the one I’d compare to those bland hyper realistic games, because it still gets very creative with its animation and visuals.

I honestly, to my surprise, actually enjoyed watching this movie. While not perfect, it's still very fun to watch; and some scenes were emotional enough to touch me. The animation is unique, the story is good, and the characters are fun. And the chemistry between Wade and Ember is pretty believable, because it does take its time to develop it - even if you can tell almost right away. And I suppose their personalities almost match their elements: Ember has trouble with her fiery temper, while Wade tends to be a sympathy cryier. To me, Wade and Emver have one of the most realistic relationships in a Disney movie, because while you can tell there is something between them, they still start off as good friends, and confirm their love near the end of the movie; thus becoming a real couple. They say opposites attract, and that's very true in their case - but they also have things in common. The moment when Ember met Wade's family was fun to watch because it showed how far society has come to accepting others; and yes, the game where Wade made Ember cry for the first time was very touching because it what sparked their true feeling for each other. It would have been nice to hear more about Wade's father; like what can of man he was, what he did for a living, and what caused their relationship to drift away. It also would have been nice to see more of Clod, he definitely should of had a bigger role. I also wish they explained more of the crack in the dam - did it just get old, or was it caused by something? The part where Ember and Wade have an argument over their differences, that I also wish could of had a bit more attention. I mean, Ember got her say on how she feels, but Wade never really explained his point of view. Maybe he could have told Ember that just because he comes from luxury, he never truly did what he wanted because of everything his father expected of him growing up - and his dying wish was for Wade to find his own path. Also, Wade could have told Ember that the reason his family has money is because of how much work they put into making a life for their families. Overall, I did enjoy the movie. And I actually thought that Wade died in the end - but it's Disney; they don't do that. And I'm actually glad they didn't. It would have been nice to see more of Ember and Wade's childhood. Maybe have them cross each other's paths multiple times, but never actually interacted. If there's ever a sequel...I'd watch it. Maybe it could be about Wade and Ember getting married and starting a family.

Also, here's where I think they were going with whole subplot of the pipes and the leaks ect. Fire was the last group to move to Elemental city, and the city was kind of already established to accomodate the other 3 elements: and because Fire is naturally more insular a group, the city just didn't bother to make changes overall to welcome them. So the fact a bit threat ot the city is infrstructure negligence towards them ties into that. Fire wasn't accommodated as well as the other 3 groups were, and kept themselves to themselves as a result. But as we see from her glass... you can miss out on a lot of amazing things if you don't put in the work needed to make things easier on a group that may need some extra steps to be welcomed....

Gotta love the double standards across the movie critics and even fans. Look, Elemental isn’t Pixar’s greatest work, but it still has the charm and made for a fun watch. The plot is generic, but what isn’t that is a Pixar movie? People had gone in with preconceived ideas that they are nitpicking everything wrong with the movie. The prejudice is strong with this one. - A Fish fighting sharks enroute to rescuing his son in Australia? - A superhero having marital issues fighting to save his marriage and son? - A rat learns to cook in f*ckin Paris in a story about love? Isn’t the Paris the city of love? HOW are past movies not cliche and generic? How are they different to Elemental plot wise? Simple plot and tropes are good. Tropes especially in 2023 are near on impossible to avoid. It is how they implement and execute that counts and in the case of Elemental, they did just enough. As I said, not a masterpiece, but certainly still a fun time.

This movie was pretty solid, for me Pixar lately has been a little half and half, I absolutely loved movies like Soul and Turning Red and thought ones like Luca and Lightyear were…decent, and when I saw the trailer for this movie I thought it looked like it had the potential to be really great, and while it didn’t quite live up to my hopes I still enjoyed it, to my surprise I really liked Wade (The water guy) Early on I thought he was gonna get on my nerves with the whole thing about him constantly crying but thankfully they didn’t play that up as much as I thought they would, and the whole idea behind why him and Ember (The fire girl) don’t mix is actually a lot deeper than I thought, because much like Zootopia this movie actually has some really good subtext about racism, that’s actually the main crux of why they feel like they can’t mix, I don’t think it does it quite as well as Zootopia but they still did a solid job with it, also much like Inside Out this movie’s world is very imaginative and it leads to a lot of cool sights and imagery, and for the most part the romance between Ember and Wade is quite good, the movie isn’t perfect though, one of its flaws is unfortunately Ember, at the start of the movie I actually quite liked her but as the movie went on her character became incredibly inconsistent, there’s times in this movie where she’s totally fixated on what she wants to do, namely be with Wade but then at other points she’ll just out of nowhere blow up at him and say she has to do what her father wants her to do, every single time it happened it felt so forced and out of nowhere and made me like “Where the hell did this come from?” The comedy is also a little hit and miss, nothing in the movie was ever hilarious or anything but the stuff that worked was still fairly funny, but it also had its fair share of eh moments of comedy too, and lastly there’s this main plot line that’s the thing that ultimately brings Ember and Wade together that honestly felt really tacked on and unneeded, granted it does come back into play at the end but at the start of the movie it just felt like needless padding, between that and the bizarre flip flopping of Ember’s character it got me thinking, you know what this movie feels like? A first draft, it felt like this was a good movie that could’ve been a great movie had they gone back and refined it, it didn’t really feel like the final script, but with all that said I still liked the movie, in terms of Pixar’s latest offerings I would say it’s definitely not as good as Soul or Turning Red but it is better than Luca and Lightyear, most of the characters are good, the romance is mostly well done and although the movie doesn’t really feel like the true finished product we could’ve gotten I was still entertained by it. 7/10

Definitely, the trailer did not offer insight to anything too interesting or great besides the animations. I wonder if Disney is still trying to sabatage Pixar... the last few movies were direct to Disney Plus and then Lightyear and finally.this one with a lackluster advertisement campaign. But so far, recent reviews have been very decent, which is good to hear.

I haven't seen this film but from the marketing the two major holdups I have is 1) The animation doesn't look that great. Like its not bad, but it doesn't have that Pixar quality look to it. It looks.... mass produced. 2) I feel like I have already seen the Disney animated Rom Com... Maybe like 50 times since you could basically categorize almost all their classic films in that genre. But more specifically w/ Zootopia, which seems to have an nearly identical theme and vibe, but idk, better. I guess that that was technically Walt Disney Studio's version and this is Pixar's version. But it just feels like a lower quality version of already treaded ground. And when it's from Pixar, I guess I just expect more than that.

I'm gonna be honest; this movie hit me like a truck going at 200mph (ik that's not realistic. Work with me here). I think this is a triumph for animated cinema (much like Across the Spiderverse, another great film) and harbors a multi-level experience that takes far more than 1 watch to understand. The first time I saw it, it was merely a good Pixar film - as you've stated here. At face value, there are a few pacing issues and the third act rushes. However, 1 watch turned to 2, which turned to 4, then to 7 (with many more to come, I feel). With those repeat watchings came this deep understanding of the characters' morals, ethics, and the messaging behind them. The way the animating team expressed their emotions without a word being spoken is truly unlike anything I've seen from Pixar. As an example (SPOILER ALERT), during a scene where the protagonist Ember argues with her opposite Wade, you can see a subtle transition in their body language that indicates discomfort, yet their adoration for each other still shines through. It exhibits a realism I feel has been lacking from animated cinema (bar flicks like Spiderverse, Puss In Boots 2, etc.) The very last time I saw it, I felt like I was in there for 5 hours living in the characters' shoes, feeling every little thing they felt. Not only has it clawed its way up to my #1 Pixar movie, but it may also very well be an all-time favorite. LOVE Elemental!

I've just watched the movie on Disney+. I thought it was good but not top tier. I absolutely loved the amount of creativity and imagination in this film. The world building was phenomenal. They created such a fun, interesting and incredibly vibrant world. The character designs of all the element characters was fantastic. The animation was stunning. I liked the ideas and themes of "elements don't mix". I liked how they used the fact the characters are elements to create some fun jokes. Plus I actually felt like they were going to kill off wade in the climax and it was clever how they brought him back. But the story was strange. Even though the idea of two opposites who go on an adventure learn to appreciate each other has been done so many times before, I feel like they should have focused on that. I wasn't as a fan of the love story idea and I honestly didn't care about the plot of trying to save the family shop. It would have been more refreshing if the two leads were just friends instead of making them fall in love. The characters were good but not super memorable. There was a few minor things in the story that I couldn't remember when it was brought up again, I don't know if that's just because it was my first time watching it. So yeah I enjoyed the film. It had a few positives that were incredibly well done but the story was just kinda weird and it wasn't what I expected. I have no clue why they marketing the film the way they did. They didn't market the film as a romantic comedy at all. I think I'd give it about a 6.8/10

If Across the Spiderverse, like the FIRST Spiderverse, was animated and rigged and lit here in Vancouver, that might account for the lower cost: Pixar still does everything in house. OR it could be that while Spiderverse, Stunning and inventive as it was, wasn't as reliant on FX and rendering as Elemental might also have accounted for the lower price. Sadly if Elemental underperforms as everyone expects, it could bode poorly for Pixar moving forward. Which is a shame because, again, Elemental was a GOOD movie. i don't' expect it to make the same amount as Mario or Spiderverse, but it doesn't' deserve to bomb like many expect.

@@banan4211 It's always tricky when a studio gets famous for breaking the mold.... but then finds that they themselves have gotten into a rut. Lots of animated films HAVE romances as the key goals, but rom coms feel pretty rare. Trust me, this film's worth a watch

I thought this film was dope, and so was your review. I can see why you had an issue with the crying gag, the fire temper, and the pipes. STOP HERE TO AVOID SPOILERS. I think Pixar found a way to push the story forward with each one of those issues. Her temper was how we were introduced to the water boyfriend and who helps her identify what causes her temper. I agree she shouldn't be responsible for fixing a damaged damn that leads to her town, but that situation helped reveal something else about her character that also moved the story forward. AND THE WEIRDEST GAG of all.... the crying.....I really didn't like it either, but I think it was used properly in the third act.

The 200 million dollar thing is just all chopped up to art direction. It isn't necessarily more expensive to make something more visually diverse, it just takes one small team with a well-defined vision. Original Spiderverse had the freedom to develop a crazier visual style, Pixar and Disney usually go a slightly safer route but are also huge and work slower.

Time to rank all the DCEU films now that The Flash is out, Sean. I'm seeing some folks absolutely hating it. One guy went 4/10 and he was being generous. And I get it. Some terrible CGI. Younger Barry being a moron like he was in Justice League 2017. I believe it makes the same mistakes as No Way Home while doing cool things like NWH did. I'm sorta torn right now with The Flash. I'll still have it as my 3rd fav film of 2023 but that could change in a hurry with repeat viewings. I do think multiverse makes a really bad plot device. It's really used as an excuse to offer cameos. It's gimmicky. The only ones I've enjoyed using multiverse was that Family Guy episode, the animated Spider-Man ones, and Loki S1. Everywhere Everything All At Once did it way better than Multiverse of Madness but I wouldn't go far to say they did it better than Into The Spider-Verse. Your buddy, Cody Leach, seems to despise The Flash. It has problems like I expect Dial of Destiny will have. But with DoD, my expectations could be so low, it wouldn't be hard to surpass it to surprise me a little. Air had a simple story and it worked for me from start to finish. Great dialogue. Great music. No convoluted time travel/multiverse crap needed to be explained by Keaton with spaghetti noodles. It just worked and it still was extremely heartfelt. Plus, I love movies with real stories about real people. I'm loving The Founder (2016). All the interesting superheroes have been introduced. So their stories ends up getting dumber or recycled ♻.

Lazy animation & a generic plot. Spider-Verse is waking up most studios. That’s why TMNT’s animation looks so good. Idk how people can still put up with this stuff. These animation studios need to do better.

@@scaressell6880 Its still impressive. Even if it hasnt improved. Its not lazy. CGI artists are underpaid to work more. Animating liquid like water is already hard as hell. And water is the MC. Even without that. The animation is smooth and the animation does all it needs to do for the plot. Which is in itself still a pretty time consuming difficult thing to do. Crap on animation if you want to. Its not "lazy" though.
