Little correction As per the ASTM standard, the contact length should be 13mm (0.5 in) ASTM Designation: D4318 − 17: Standard Test Methods for Liquid Limit, Plastic Limit, and Plasticity Index of Soils, page 9 12.4 Lift and drop the cup by turning the crank at a rate of 1.9 to 2.1 drops per second until the two halves of the soil pat come in contact at the bottom of the groove along a distance of 13 mm (1⁄2 in.). See Fig. 7 and Fig. 8. The base of the machine shall not be held with the hand, or hands, while the crank is turned. NOTE 10-Use of a scale is recommended to verify that the groove has closed 13 mm (1⁄2 in.).

hello, can you help me to solve this question ? liquid limit can be determined using the ASTM method by plotting the moisture content versus the corresponding number of blows on semilogarithmic graph. Liquid limit can be also determined by the fall cone test by plotting the moisture content versus the corresponding cone penetration on semilogarithmic graph. How do these two relationships look like? And why? Thank you.
@jasonlewis4603 жыл бұрын
did you find a answer? im curious about the relationship

Sir which is correct ● When a groave of 2mm is filled with 25 no of blows , then that water content is called liquid limit . OR ● When a groave of 12mm is filled with 25 no of blows , then that water content is called liquid limit .

Assalamo alaikum! I have two questions regarding this vedio can any body help me? #1: why we use No 40 sieve not any other? If answer is to get finer fraction then why not No 200 sieve is used? #2 why 25 No of blows is fixed to get the liquid limit value from semilograthmic graph?
@jasonlewis4603 жыл бұрын
Thats a good question, did you get a answer? i was thinking that was his experimental method example. I think you can use any sieve but the finer the easier to close the soil. I think you can as much blows as needed but it needs to be consistent in each test.

. If the material of the base of the Casagrande liquid limit device on which the cup containing soil paste drops is softer than the standard hard rubber,thenA.the liquid limit of soil always increasesB.the liquid limit of soil always decreasesC.the liquid limit of soil may increaseD.the liquid limit of soil may decrease ANY ONE CAN PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS??
@centroidcivil4 жыл бұрын
Liquid limit means that particular water content when 13mm (0.5 inch) meet under exact 25 blows. Now when standard hard rubber used: water content is X% & meet 13 mm & blow = 25. Now softer rubber used: Meet should be 13 mm & blow is also 25, to do that flowability of the soil must be increased as rubber base is softer, so liquid limit will be more than X%. We can say under 25 blow, to meet 13 mm using softer rubber base more thin sample is required. So Option A is correct.
@nicostasi88874 жыл бұрын
lovely video!!! how did you do this animation?? I need to do something similar for a presentation!
@emdadulhoque2784 жыл бұрын
Liquid limit less than 50 % a range 15 to 35 drops
@AKHILESHKUMAR-sf1yz5 жыл бұрын
Sir how water content is high at less no of blows
@centroidcivil4 жыл бұрын
As example 13 mm meet by 5 blow - means more water in the sample - thin sample - less shear strength. 13 mm meet by 50 blows - means less water in the sample - thick sample - more shear strength. 3 points 1. How much distance meet 2. Water content 3. No of blow To establish relationships between any two, take the 3rd one as constant.
