Thank you for stopping by! In this video, I'm creating on a 24x48" canvas. I walk you through my process and also talk about the elements I include when working through my composition.
I'm doing a little survey: let me know in the comments below if you're a beginner artist or if you've been painting for a while. And, if you're a selling artist (creating/selling art full time) or creating art as a hobby.
My work is inspired by my love for fields of flowers.

I started painting when I retired at 64. Love watching these videos and taking classes. Never dreamed of selling but threw it out there on social media after friends encouraged me. I had an open house with friends and neighbors and sold 25 paintings. Going on 4 years. Just love it!

Just a retired person who loved art back in high school and now 50 years later I’m addicted to it! I do mix media, art journaling, junk journals and have done one abstract and started another since watching your videos. The second has been sitting for months now as I noticed my marks are to precise and I’m eventually going for another layer hopefully more loose and organic. Thanks so much for for sharing your art. It’s so inspiring. Oh and I just turned 70 and have been rating for a little over 3 years now.

I was attracted to your energy because I always painted too perfectly. Watercolors for 20 years. Then I needed something wild, painted some great pieces in acrylic, And then your work came along. I am also Croatian , by the way. I am developing my own style with some great ideas from your podcasts on KZbin. So, sending blessings your way, And, Thank You very much.

9-28-2023 Hi, Kelly here from Seattle, just subscribed today. I am creating art for myself, friends and family. I work full time as a Realtor in Seattle. About 10 years ago, I drove to Dakotas Art and bought the biggest canvases, all the brushes, every color imaginable and many beginner art books. It has been the greatest journey, peace in my mind and a wonderful way to decompress from my busy life. I have never taken an art class, just read my books and started to create and learn from each canvas. I am very excited to see all your video's. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. All the best to you.

First of all, I just love everything about you and your paintings! I’ve been painting for years with the goal of selling my art. Mostly I enjoy the freedom you paint with and have learned a lot from you! 🙏💕 When you create a course I would love to learn more about composition pulling it together after all those freedom movements, your brushes, how you make your circles, where to put things and how to make different sizes work together, getting through to the other side, procrastination.

I am 64 and ready to retire into my next chapter of life. I have been a pianist/ piano teacher as a career forever. Back in the day, my art teachers in school tried to impress upon me that I should go into art as a career. I did painting as a hobby on and off over the years. Now I want to devote serious time to it and discover what my style is. I adore color and color mixing and I seem to be leaning toward a quasi- geometric expressionist style. Thank you for your videos!!

Have been watching for a few years. Have been making art for most my life, but dont do it as my main source of income. . Right now Im really interested in other artists' creative process and I enjoy watching how you start and pull together all these little marks into a cohesive whole, its like magic! You have a calming voice too so its like a little break from life to watch. I like learning about the challenges other artists face in making their work, overcoming personal issues, mental blocks, life challenges so I like watching/learning about other artists processes. You bring so much joy and put it into your videos and work and that is really apparent and I guess I am watching for that too. For that I am thankful.

Love how this turned out with this horizontal format. You have created depth by varying your stepping stones-they get smaller, and smaller versions of those stones make the “path into the painting” because it’s the illusion of receding. Clever. Same with your flower shapes-some larger come forward and smaller receding. All those paths into and around the painting make this composition work!

Betty - Love your videos and how you take the time to go through each painting from start to finish. So methodical and careful to teach what you’re doing and why! I’m retired now and paint ( acrylics and watercolor) for personal pleasure - but have been painting since I was 14- I have a love for flowers also - all flowers ❤ painted professionally in the 80’s and 90’s- lots of commissioned work and taught classes - lived and sold to clients in Newport Beach California and Laguna Beach - sold to Neiman Marcus in Newport - I travel to Maui now several times a year - painting tropical florals and ocean scenes - it’s so relaxing and meditative! I agree- please keep up your wonderful teaching and creations - you encourage so many to use their talents and they can be developed at any age! ( I also love my rigor/script brush ( so loose and free) God bless you! You’re wonderful 🌈🌺🤙aloha

Been dabbling in all kinds of art since I was young. Mostly watercolor as an adult. I studied with a local artist, but I was raising a child and working full time. When Covid hit, i was 62, I pulled out acrylic kit a friend had given me and started creating like crazy. Found Betty’s channel and love it. But, I unwittingly messed up my arm from not using proper body mechanics. Had to take a break, do PT and massage. I have sold 3 paintings. Need to learn how to paint and take care of my body too. Thanks Betty. 🙏🏼☮️🙋🏼‍♀️🌼

I've been an artist all my life - I didn't study it past A Level but continued to paint and draw, as a past time and active hobby, when work and family life allowed. I'm now in a situation where I can paint and create on a daily basis; I've developed and learnt new techniques, broadened my understanding of how to use a wider range of mediums, and am now looking to sell my artwork, either as prints or cards, or as originals. I am a full time artist, as of recently ( the last 2 years) I’ve been painting for about 40 years. I recently switched to abstraction. Which is quite fun and challenging. In all this time, I have sold a few of my pieces, but I don’t have a website or gallery showings. That just seems like another full time job. I commend you on your ability to create your art , do videos, manage the marketing aspect of selling . Love your videos, and your work, and watching your process.

I begin my part-time art career about 23 years ago and it started in Mosaics. I used to do natural stone mosaics. When the pandemic hit I found myself drawn to happy colors. I have been following you for a while and I decided to pick up Betty‘s bundle and a paintbrush and I haven’t put it down! I’ve learned so much from you I’m still learning I love the process. I appreciate your generosity. I am a caregiver to my 88 year old mother and I work at a university full-time during the day and this is my release. And this is what I want to be doing when I retire. So I’m starting now and trying to build a full-time art career. I absolutely love nova color paints. And in a nutshell that’s my story. Thank you so much!❤️

I am so in once your classes are up count me in. I mentioned on a previous video that I only recently started painting basically because of the pandemic, back in 2020. I was already a craft artist and entertainer both things that got put on the back burner once lockdown happened. I didn't want to risk working on any film tv projects and my inbetween gig of creating home decor, fashion wear and accessories was put on hold, as I didn't feel I could sell the items safely etc.. I had gone to a paint night prior to pandemic that was gifted to me and that made me interested to some degree in doodling which sent me on a journey through youtube looking for inspiration.. I found you and then two more mentors all of whom I watch regularly each of you teach abstract but there are so many differences in style and that intrigues me helping me find my own voice.. and I see this as an add on to what I already do and I can't wait for better weather and opportunities to really get out there again. I have participated in three art shows since starting, recieved a certificate of mention, sold two paintings and may have another sold. I started painting at 60 and now am 62yrs old [ which just goes to show the saying is true... “It is never too late to be what you might have been.” -- George Eliot I would love to send you some images of what I have done that's been inspired by you.. I'm of course still learning, but loving this journey. So save me a seat in the class teach :-) 🍎

Thank you for sharing your process. I’ve been doing some type of art for many years but only recently become fascinated by abstract expressionism. But it is so hard! I know what I like, but I’m finding it challenging actually creating it. I’m quite new to paint in general. I do take online classes frequently and I’m always interested in learning the artists thought process, how and why they make choices, how to balance the piece and when to know it’s finished! I feel like I’m on an endless loop! Thanks again for sharing and I’ll be sure to watch more!

Since you like hearing the artist's thoughts behind their process, you may be interested in my new online course where I break everything down (in real time) and also talk through every brush stoke (why I put down colors where I do, etc.). Just beautiful. I am a self taught artist started, at age 56. Did watercolor landscape to learn then switched to acrylic abstract 8 years ago. Lately I’ve done 2 realistic commissions and am now doing watercolor home portraits. But every time I watch your videos I’m inspired to more abstraction. I just came up with an idea of how to express the rugged lava landscape of Hawaii, where I live, based on your flowers style. The stars just aligned! Thank you soooo much!

I just started painting in January when everything happened at once: I finally joined my husband in retirement COMPLETELY, we became empty nesters, and Covid meant no travel. So, I read four books on colour and abstract art basics in the first week of this year, took thirty pages of notes and was very lucky to come across your posts and videos. I haven't looked back. I paint every day. Sometimes all day. I am doing what I always wanted to do. I am sharing my art with my close friends in Facebook and they're calling me an artist! 😂🎉♥️

Love your content. Online class would be great. I started art studying at Art Student's League in 70's, etching and sculpture. Have painted since the early 90's, mainly acrylics, but worked a 9-5 job. Now retired and looking to paint full time. Love your style and your teaching is excellent. In on-line courses I've taken I seemed to get the most out of seeing the instructor demo the 'how-to' of painting. How to paint on paper, canvas, panel, framing options, mark making tools, learning one's own style. Least fav content is critique of student's work as it seems to take up so much time (honestly speaking here.) Teaching tools, prep, methods, pit-falls, is what I always seek. Thanks for being such a generous teacher.

Hi Betty! Your work makes me so happy! I grew up painting with oils since I was about 12. I used to do the art curcuit in Miami that would be at all the church festivals:) I used to sell a lot especially when I was in high school...(many moons ago!) Mostly Everglades scenes and water birds, as well as a few commissioned portraits. I stopped painting to pursue a career in music but have come full circle and I now do both! I've always wanted to do abstract and this is the first I've tried. I am enjoying your videos and the process and took your class. My dream is to go to one of your workshops one of these days!!!

I'm fairly new to painting, although I do have a few fun canvases from when I was so young I could hardly write my name (they look like abstract in today's world :-)) I've always loved inks, paper, collage, card making and such. I've taken a few classes to spark my creativity with this medium and have had some folks tell me that they love the work and want to buy when I'm ready to sell. Mostly I've done small work, but ready to branch to some larger pieces. I love finding ways to incorporate the multitude of mediums I love - sometimes it's technique, sometimes it's actually the "stuff". I still work full time so this is a side thing for me. I'm in the process of building up a business for it - one step at a time. Thank you for all you do!

Hi, I love this painting and think the 'imperfect' approach is so artistic. I've done many different crafts over the last 50 years, worked in drafting so think of myself more as a designer then true artist. Started on oil paintings 12 years back but gave up due to lack of space and the smell. Last year got a much bigger house so I now have a painting room where I can leave things and start again anytime. Am trying different styles to see what suits me, realistic representation is not possible for me. I don't have the drawing skills required and my hands are far too shaky to work neatly. I'm pleased I found you on utube, I too love flowers nature and bright colour. So now in my retirement I'm going to have a go at copying your style for a while and see where it takes me with my acrylic painting. I'm Dutch-Australian living in Queensland.

Hi Betty - I am a retired designer, painting acrylics for 20 yrs. I lack confidence to offer my work for sale, although in the excitement of early years, I exhibited with our local art Guild and sold almost every time I submitted work. So what went wrong? High standards of perfection, overly design critical, poor self esteem, all the usual whinging, combined with health issues. Your style and personality have inspired me to at least love what I do and appreciate my strengths. It amazes me how happy I feel when I see that you have a new video - thank you, most sincerely, dear lady.

At 6:47 I loved that. If the left top corner had been painted I would have called it done. Then comes another painting. All your layers are so fascinating…. I got really sick in my early 40’s and lost my nursing career. I started painting on saw blades and watercolor paper. My art group considered me a folk artist. I painted landscapes with cabins barns, fences, cows and trees. Whatever I saw in my head flowed easily. When we had an art show I was given the back corner which was fine for me. The Master artist came in to critique our work and he took one gal in with him. When he got to my section he asked if I ever had lessons or classes. She said no. He said tell her to never take a class lololo. Pretty fun. Another Master artist saw my large cross cut and was told I didn’t paint anymore. He asked if I was really sick at the time. He said a lot of people that get ms or other nasty thing get really artistic. That was when I was in my forties and now I am 71 and retired and starting again. Oh all my work sold in those days mostly by word of mouth. Oh what is funny is people would ask me to do like gma cabin and I would ask for picture and oops all I got was a description. This one was a 36” circular that I had a lazy Susan built and I painted the top half upside down. When the son came in he said hey that’s gma cabin I got a fifty buck bonus sold for total $500. Phew …. That happened 4 more times and I found out I do not like commission work. It took part of the fun out of it. You know. When I get moved my focus will be to share my paints, brushes and have a group of everyone that has always wanted to try at my Senior community. So many people say they wished. I hope to make their wish come true.Anything I sell now is just for cost. I am in a low income housing and it really messes me up if I make any money. It would be ok if it was steady but adjusting my rent all the time is stressful anyway my daydream is to have a group and let them play. It would be all the pay I would need. Ok YOU ASKED lololol 💗🥀❤️🌺

I love this so much! I try to add flower petals to my art but it always looks awkward. It doesn't seem to fit but yours is perfect! When you said you love all things that are perfectly imperfect it made me realize why I love your art so much. I love anything distressed or vintage bohemian moroccan looking. Like filigree but oldish not shiny and new and perfect. If you know what I mean. It is hard to put into words like you said. Ive distressed some of my furniture in the past and even considered painting some of my clothes to match, but too much. Lol. I love delicate vintage jewelry as well. It all reflects the look of your art. Thank you for that inspiration. Still trying to find my style using those concepts but a lot of the time I'm so afraid to try things because I don't want it to come across as childish. Yours does not! The struggle is real! lol 😄

You asked about our art journey and purpose: I've been an artist since I began holding a pencil. My earliest memories are of drawing all the animals pictured in the dictionary, before I could even read! I quit all art at 16, when my mom died and didn't pick it back up until my children were grown - mid 40's. Today I'm trying to be you 🤣🤣🤣! I want to be professional and sell everything as fast as I create it!!! (We all need a dream) I would love to take your course! Personally, I don't know how to begin with the business side of it. Step 1 has me stumped 🙃 Also, I'm currently trying to learn how to photograph my work - maybe you could make a video on your process. What lens do you use? Is your camera 24mp or more? There's just soooooo much to learn. ALSO, I enjoy your videos because of who you are. Your presence is calming, friendly and you are very relatable to me. I don't paint like you - I tried. I just like YOU!

Awe...you're so sweet, Stephanie! Thank you for sharing all that with me. I'm so sorry your mom passed away when you were so young. I can't imagine how difficult that was for you. I'm glad you got back into painting after a long hiatus. I'm not sure I feel comfortable doing a video on photographing artwork. I'm still trying to figure it all out. I recently bought a canon rebel camera and it's like learning a foreign language! So much to learn.

I have loved art since I was a toddler. My aunt was an artist and I wanted to be just like her. I studied art in college with an emphasis in Graphic Design. And worked my whole career as a designer. I still am a GD but now at 60 I finally have time for art. I spend every day drawing or painting. I love learning new techniques and would love to take a class. I would love to sell my art eventually. Being creative is my meditation.

As always I really enjoy you talking through your painting process. Lovely to hear the story at the end too. Just a coincidence or is it pre determined!? Life can be quite intriguing on occasion. It's a small world!

Hi Betty! I have been painting since covid as I could not work as an musician during that time under those circumstances. I love abstract painting which developped now into a main occupation and replaced my music. Your video is great. I will watch it again, appreciating how you talking while being in the process. i would be interested to participate in a course online when you are ready.
