@@RonLambily I guess you can interprete it in many ways, but I view this song as some kind of extension of what she did in "How" with Daughter (this one is really explicit in what she tries to say), about someone that she loved, but this person does not, and it's not "mature" enough for her. She tries, and stays there ("it's clear I waited too long"), waiting for the person she loved to commit, to be there for her, which was not the case ("longing for you to please be an adult"). She was in love with someone that didn't saw her the way she saw this person, probbably was some kind of "one night" thing ("we were drunk once"), or some kind of one sided love with a friend ("it's not like we were some dream combination, we were made as friends"), but still, none of it was an obstacle to stop her from falling deeply in love with this other person. It's kinda sad cause besides all of that, she still hoped for this person to change for apparently a long long time, and stayed there hoping for this person to love her in the same way she did ("all adventures, they were in my head, I created life for them"), even if that was destroying her inside, feeding up this illusion. It's even more sad cause after all that, the song implies that she closed herself up to love ("I lift myself up, now I don't get hurt"), and all the "machine" references, which for me, it's a metaphor for feelings being "made" and fed by us, humans, and that she shut herself down to all these kinds of feelings, like a robot who can't feel anything. It's just the way I see it btw, Idk if it really is what this is about, but I can feel every word of this song in this kind of way cause reflects something I already experienced, and makes total sense to me lol.
