I was born in Colombia but I’ve been living in Jackson Heights since I was 2, so about 20 years. I’ve always loved the diversity and I’ve grown up surrounded by so many different cultures. It breaks my heart because I’ve noticed more starbucks, more chipotles, more dunkin donuts, they’re opening up a target right on Roosevelt, less small restaurants, mom and pop shops, food trucks, small businesses, etc. My beautiful neighborhood is slowly being gentrified and I just wanna talk about that and put that out there even if no one sees this comment

We do not want gentrification in our community. Don’t expect people to speak English just for you. Don’t call the cops on street/subway vendors. Don’t bother or harass kids/teens that have lived here their whole lives. And don’t move in this neighborhood if you can’t handle different races cultures and ways of life.
@slowloris22583 жыл бұрын
Stacey's story about culture and identity speaks to the experience of so many 0th and 1st generation kids in big cities like NYC that I don't think most people are familiar with. One of the great parts about growing up in NYC is that you can make friends who can relate so you don't feel like the odd one out. It's one of the things I miss the most about NYC now that I'm away for school.
@yolandaramos17373 жыл бұрын
If you visit Jackson heights be respectful. Do not treat our neighborhood like it’s the city or your home if you come from the city. These are homes to many minority groups. We do not want gentrification in our community. Many people from the city come and simply don’t respect. This is a place of culture and many languages. Don’t expect people to speak English just for you. Don’t call the cops on street/subway vendors. Don’t bother or harass kids/teens that have lived here their whole lives. And don’t move in this neighborhood if you can’t handle different races cultures and ways of life.

Hi everyone, I have a question, this is genuine curiosity. If I as a foreigner wanted to move to nyc, would I already be participating in gentrification? NYC is a dream city for me, but I don't want to participate in gentrification. I would feel horrible knowing that the place (apartment/area) I live in was taken from somebody that lived there all their life. I'm sorry is the answer might be ovbious but I really wanted to ask the question because I want to be conscious of the impact of the decisions I make if i decided to move to nyc.

Taber uses the expression "white passing" to describe herself. That was the first time I'd ever heard that, and that it came from New York makes it especially interesting, considering that's the moneyist city with the most diversity in the world: what's more interesting than that (even for the religiously extreme, who might note it was the founding capital of a country with "In God We Trust" on its currency)? My grandfather was partly Spanish and wouldn't have qualified as "white passing". So where does that put me? I'm almost 100% European, and never went by "white". I didn't live in a white neighbourhood, don't live in one, and wasn't born in one. What's the city speak for me? My uncle in London used to say "PMT" to his clients, and then do an impression of a woman in an acquired accent saying "That was last week", and in connection, I think I'll become a member of the Indian tribe I'm related to if I can, so I'm closer to East Asians, the so-called "model minority".
