tip my dad told me: teenagers (aka me lmao), if you get a summer job or something to make a little extra pocket money, take your paychecks and keep a certain percentage (i split mine 50/50) for pocket money and put the rest of it in savings. this money can be used in university for groceries, essentials, pocket money, etc. you don't wanna be working and studying at the same time for stress reasons and other things!

As someone in their 20s, I feel like what has been easiest for me when it comes to a budget is asking for help over time (adding a new expense to your "What I'm Responsible to Pay For" list each in each step of financial development, but not being disappointed in yourself when you still need help from your family) and making your emergency fund and budget after the first month of a new job (and readjusting the budget to the lowest monthly/ weekly/ biweekly average wage).

I have always just taken part of what I made and put it away. If i made $100 for work, then i would try to put down $10 or $20 if possible. Just anytime you make any amount of money take as much as you can and put it in a savings or wherever you keep your cash. even if it is a couple dollars, better than nothing!
@jane9250-h5v4 жыл бұрын
automatic withdrawals are great!! Because it's a set amount of money and not a percentage of what you're earning, you can save ambitiously and create a plan for your short term/long term goals (ex: $200 a month for 3 years = over $7000 saved!). If you didn't make enough that month for the withdrawal, your bank just won't take it and there are no fees (double check this with your bank tho), and you can toss some extra money into your savings to make up for that month when you have it. I've never tried the percentage system but I imagine that works well too, if you take a percentage of what you earn out right away, you won't notice it, and you can save up bits of money easily.

I always get extra money it's not like I need all of them. But I realized if I save them it would make a lot difference.

Defining my wants vs. needs is a battle I’ve been fighting but I’m finding that it’s so worth it! It’s incredibly rewarding when I’m aware of the good I’m doing for my future finances, and putting large chunks of money away in savings funds to build up to a goal is very satisfying. Like, $5 at Starbucks on the way home from work, or just that much more money to go to my “move out” fund?

Something that I started doing that has been the best for saving is to hold all of my money in my savings account instead of my checkings! Every paycheck, I pay off what I have spent on my credit card and the rest goes directly into my savings. If I go grocery shopping or need to pay bills I will transfer exactly what I need into my checkings, so it makes you think twice before spending on something you don't need!

thank you so much for talking about this in such an open and positive manner. There are lots of financial advice out there, but it is so much more relatable when it's coming from someone our age

Really impressed by your mindset and the valuable content on your channel - you are set up for success early in life. Just a year of dedicated work on the finance area in life can be a game changer. Starting your age is certainly the best thing you can do for your future self, you can be very proud of yourself!

i love your video. i think there is so much to get from but one thing i dnt really agree with is the quote u mentionned towards the end. i feel like it does ME more harm than good because i usually save a % but also what is left from my spending. if i only save and spend what is left after my saving, i'd spend way more because i feel like, okk i have saved the 20% now lets go crazy. whereas if i spend, i would be very cautious and then i'd save the 20% but also what i left from the spending that i did not actually wanna spend at the end of the month.
