Elephant & Castle fire - Huge explosion under train station sends massive plume of smoke over London

A HUGE blaze has broken out in South London - after a massive explosion under Elephant and Castle train station.
Black smoke can be seen billowing above the capital for miles after a large fireball erupted under the major transport hub.
A police officer and a member of the public at being treated for smoke inhalation after a blaze broke.
Terrified witnesses posted the shocking images on social media, explaining that they had been “engulfed” in black smoke.
Police are currently urgently evacuating residents and businesses in the area.
Officers have reportedly confirmed that "dangerous chemicals" have been involved in the blaze.
Thick plumes of black smoke could be seen filling the air above central London at around 1.45pm this afternoon.
Travellers were urgently evacuated from the station after the blaze broke out.
There are unconfirmed reports the fire broke out at an auto repair shop in one of the arches under the station.
A mechanic who works in the garage said: “We all had to run out of the shop. I didn’t see how it started.
“There were six of us in the shop at the time. We left all our things in there and had to run. I could see flames about seven metres high.
“My phone is still in there and all my things. There are three cars in there now and other things that can explode so I don’t think we will be allowed back.”

Any firefighter should be able to look at that and know that it was NOT an explosion, it was what we call a Flashover, where the flammable products in the smoke reach their flashpoint and ignite suddenly... I remember the "Whoomph" sound it made from my Flashover training.

Okay, that wasn't a detonation - what you get from an explosive going "bang!" - that was a deflagration - something combustible going "whoomph!". While not conclusive, it does make me inclined to believe it was an accidental fire in a workshop or storage facility containing flammable material rather than terrorism. Still not good, particularly if anyone was caught nearby, but it's less likely to have been caused by some of the more fanciful theories going around at the moment.

Also bombs aren't traditional anymore. They're liquid. If not properly made they wouldn't detonate. They would burn. This is literally why we're not allowed to carry drinks on planes or cologne bottles over a certain size. The UK had a cell that was making bombs look soft drinks. It's chemistry now.

There used to be a pub there, years ago, called the Elephant and Castle. It had a statue of an Elephant with a castle on it's back. The pub is gone now, but everybody still knows the location as "The Elephant and castle" or, if you are a Londoner, just "The Elephant".

The original pub/coach house was named after a reverse motif of the guinea coin of the 17th/18th century. It indicated that it was a place where people could exchange the coin for lower denominations. Angel is the same(coach house named after the high denomination angel coin.). The elephant and castle was the logo of a trading company operating in West africa, the castle/fort if I remember correctly was in Freetown , Sierra Leone.

It was caused by an electrical fault in a car that took place within the garage's spray booth area. So as you can imagine with other cars in there, the chemicals and oils etc how intense the fire was and how much of a dangerous situation it was. Well done to the LFB for getting it under control within 4.5 hours of the incident it could be worse, three units were destroyed, cars and a telephone box with train services disrupted for a day to. It was a big incident.
