@@reducecotwo :) That's how they introduce themselves with their unique 'signature'-scent, by blowing air into the other's trunk or mouth, which sets that scent-memory in place, so they have made friends now, and will never forget the scent of their friend; it's like their name, only much more so, and far more socially engaged. It's so much more than people giving a hug. :)

@@sueinraleigh3091 Everything they do communicates, it's just that we, as daft humans, don't know what we're seeing that is right in front of us. Tail posture/movements, leg wags and in what direction, ear movements, trunk movements, mouth movements, head posture, countenance, type of gait, all of it communicates. We also haven't realized that Bunma is seeing something wholly new to her at ENP, that she has NEVER seen before, since elephants at typical elephant-camps are kept isolated and chained when not working, they are not permitted to touch or socialize, not allowed to walk around or express their Will at all, barely existing. But for the last 9 days, she has seen elephants walking around with no one riding them, freely socializing and touching, engaging, making friends, and this is life-changing, POWERFUL, and she's been starved of it for years! When, other than her baby and the big bull that sired her, was she last touched by an elephant? maybe 11-12 years ago when she was taken from her mother and put into the Crush pen to be tortured? As regular viewers of ENP's channels, we don't realize how POWERFUL this change is for these elephants that were previously starved of elephant contact and fellowship/friendship, their natural ways having been stripped from them by force! This is LIFE to her! We are watching a transformation! Her countenance is now relaxed, she is wide-eyed and attentive, listening to all that the elephants tell her, not fearful, keeping her babe in the center of the krall where they can't touch her, but actively engaged, fully, now in the present moment. It is SO good to see! :)

I love how happy the elephants are to greet new rescues. They run to meet them and then touch them gently with their trunks. There's probably lots of low rumbling going on that we can't hear: it's a way that elephants communicate with each other. I really love when the babies give those happy squeaky sounds! There's a program I saw on PBS some years ago about the raising of orphaned wild baby animals. Baby elephants require the same constant attention baby humans do. At an African refuge where they care for orphaned baby elephants one of the head rangers, an wonderful old grandfatherly man, explained that he spent half of his life raising baby elephants at work and the other half at his home village raising the babies in his family. Ther's a scene where he is asleep on a kind of high bunk bed above and the baby elephant is on her straw bed below him tucked in with some blankets, on her side, and snoring away. It's the cutest baby video I've ever seen. All of his baby elephants that are grown up are in a half wild herd in the reserve but they love to greet him and nuzzle him when he stops by. Talk about job satisfaction. His kids became rangers too.

In that sense elephants are like any other highly social beings, that they do not want whoever into their herd, nor do want to bond with what ever another herd. They have personal preferences. Sometimes an elephant isn't suitable to a herd. - This looked like they're very interested of each others.

When an individual shows up, it's much easier to establish the pecking order. Not the same when you have two existing pecking orders. Not many males in herds either. The big bulls head off on their own. Herds are a ladies club with a few bouncers hanging around.

I love how Chaba is nucking on the other babies trunks like they’re binkies. It seems both Chaba and Bunma are more comfortable, and Mama especially seems less stressed. She looks so young, poor dear - it will be good for her to not only have a Nanny/Sister, but to continue to receive encouragement from the rest of the herd. Blowing air from their trunk into another ele's trunk or mouth, is not only a way of greeting, it is their introduction, giving their unique 'signature'-scent to the other for life-memory. In this way, Chaba has already become friends with both Pyi Mai and Wan Mai, and she will never forget the scents of her friends. Their unique scent is like a name, but more so, and when they share this, they are very socially engaged, far more than one human hugging another. ~ ENP has a number of YT channels: Eleflix, Elephant News, Elephant Nature Park, and others. On 'Elephant Nature Park' a couple of days ago, they posted a new little video of Chaba playing with water in a tub in their krall while Bunma was peacefully eating in the background, and in the comment-section, a staff member answered questions that were lovely to read about how they were doing. As well, they shared a link to their new article at the website about these two, that gave information that we haven't had until reading the article. So maybe readers here will enjoy referencing these two things, as they both provide further updates, and are a delight to see. :)

They are kept isolated, in separate kralls and chained, not allowed to walk around or to ever touch or be touched, barely existing, without what is natural. Here, Bunma sees something she has NEVER SEEN BEFORE, elephants roaming around, free to socially engage, to touch and be touched, able to make friends. This is SO powerful to go from isolation to friendship, it's a life-changer, and has to be amazing to her! Thrilling! It's easy to see how her countenance has so changed in the last 9 days since rescue! :)

It is also very positive that Bunma isn't keeping Chaba in the center of the krall to keep any of the other elephants from touching her > it shows she doesn't have fear of them and that she's feeling safe and secure that she's not worrying for her baby. :) Every little positive thing she does shows us progress, and she's moving right along, away from the past and now living in the present! :)

@@cacatr4495 who knows maybe we will both get the chance to work with them. I have only been watching this channel for approx. a year. I watch Jabulani (HERD) elephant rescue from SA. They take in injured and abused elephants and integrate them in to a mixed herd. Jabulani is the big bull that came in severely injured many years ago as a baby. The elephants are escorted in to the bush during the day but brought back to a safe area during the night. You should give them a watch.

@@juliehillman8743 I have heard of them, but my attention is typically focused on David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT/SWT) of Kenya, where they rescue and hand-rear orphaned elephants for eventual return to the Wild, from the nursery to reintegration units over the course of several years, or here. There are other good elephant-support nonprofits as well, but my time is limited. Thank you for sharing that.
