I got in touch with the owner and he said that the elevator is still original.

That machine is known as a "Basement Drum" elevator....state of California wants all those gone. The motor is a "Flat Top" motor used before WWII....some basement drums were pretty high speed....but there are several old techs missing fingers due to their design. The controller looks to be a Star Delta control....uses PLC's for control functions...the guy who ran Star Delta stopped doing elevators and many of his controllers have no back up on PLC programming...works great until it dies one day. Unless your a licensed Elevator Inspector/Mechanic the owner violated Tate codes letting you in that equipment room. Looks like you were in the Tenderlion district.....many buildings with old equipment around those parts.

+427zoh6 yes I was. Lots of historic elevators there.
@upanddownadventures7 жыл бұрын
+427zoh6 What old elevators do you know of in particular in San Francisco, and northern California in general? Do you know of any manually controlled elevators, any signal operation elevators (such as Otis Signal Control), any steam powered, or water hydraulic (running off of city water pressure and not a pump in the machine room like a modern hydraulic elevator), or hand powered, or pull rope operated elevators? San Francisco does have a lot of old elevators. Do you know of any original elevators that predate the 1906 earthquake & fire? Is California currently doing anything actively to encourage replacement of winding drum elevators? I know in the past they did not allow them to be modernized (to encourage them to be replaced instead of modernized), but they can now be modernized as far as I know. I know they also have tried before to pass laws that would require most of them to be removed. I love historic elevators, and I hope they don't require winding drum elevators to be removed as then the state's oldest elevators would no longer exist.

I've been on some more moderns stuff with 3-speed leveling, especially an old Payne at U-Mass Lowell. You could see it through the door, and was captured on-camera.
