ELEVATOR FROM 1905 - Explaining the logic + floor selector in action.

I've gone to a lot of time and effort to explain how some of this lift and it's logic works.
But it's what you come to expect in a mrmattandmrchay video... everything explained in detail, in a way that anyone can understand. All my videos are aimed with this in mind, beginners are always welcome!
None of this stuff has moved since 1988!

I love explaining stuff to you guys, but I will never show the actual handling of heavy duty switch gear. I always treat the equipment as live, as it trains your mind NOT to touch stuff like this. There can be no mistakes, you touch it and it's live with 415VAC then it's game over for you - YOU DIE!
This technology is BRUTAL!! It's not complicated, but it's amazing what they had to do, what they had to build, to make the lift do basic functions that TODAY we wouldn't even think about.
There are metal contacts everywhere and you'd be killed working on this antique machinery unless it is switched off.
Since 1988, the shaft has been sealed and the motor room has been left alone.
Absolutely fascinating looking into how this machinery works and what everything does.

APOLOGIES to make so many parts, but I don't like making really long videos for a couple of reasons 1) People don't like watching long videos, 2) These videos take ages to edit, and if I split the parts up you get to see them quicker!
Some people have accused me of dragging out the video for more revenue - This is the OPPOSITE of what I stand for. I'm NOT a money type person and I have a day job which pays me much more than youtube!

Thanks very much! Although I worked out the wiring (and I had that diagram also) it was Pete Lomas behind discovering exactly how the selector functioned. I'm sure I would have worked it out in the end, but this was his field of expertise and he gave me the answers needed to complete this video.

That's not shouting, that's the correct level of excitement for working a 1905 Otis lift :) This is your channel, you do things your way. The people that appreciate it will support you and stay, others will go and that's fine. It this is too long, then Matt and Tom's Live Shredding of KZbin comments is a week in comparison! (~3h50m) It seems to be the right amount of time for YT content these days, which is perfect. It is great seeing a lift of this vintage moving, even if its not moving the cabin physically. It was explained in a way most people would understand and none of it was technically challenging. Loved it, can't wait for the next part and love getting the notifications for new vids, thanks to the notification bell. :)

This i probably the best video out their on explaining how a floor selector works since it will have progressed alot since the early days of automatic lifts but they would never leave this basic principal of operation no matter what floor selector it is it,s always just a bunch switches wired in a certain manner

Great Video! I explored a lift similar to this design in the mid 80s as a child with my father. Only it was in working order. If only we had the forethought to document it as you have. Very well done and thank you for your channel!

+Evan Chan The video resolution has been 1080p 60fps for a long time now. My sony WX350 is 1080p but 30 fps. The lighy level matters a lot though. My action cam in low light doesnt cope very well as its a small lens and light input into the CCD chip matters. Can't remember what video you pointed out before but I don't purposely go out to make low res videos but the video is as good as the camera i have with me on the day. Even this one was unplanned and a chance finding

True. It is a good thing that various historical societies exist who put love and money into machinery such as this. Yeah - unfortunately for the sake of glorious, old technology, people's needs continue to change and evolve. Also, the economy comes into play. Cheaper, with a faster turn-around time on manufacturing and supportive maintenance is what most building/ property owners are concerned with now.

Hi, Things are very busy at the moment. I have so much to edit, so much stuff that's not going to be edited any time soon. At work, omg, the company I work for is doing extremely well - we're winning so many contracts and it's a great company to work for also. This keeps me busy Mon-Fri, leaving only evenings and weekends. I'm still dedicated to spending time with my family, especially Chay as he is 13 and I don't want to miss his younger years. A few years from now I guess he will become more and more independent and I'm going to miss him as a kid. Therefore, Saturday daytimes are out and me and Chay do kickboxing, leaving Saturday evening and Sundays, where we normally do stuff. Sorry for such a long reply, but the little time I get to edit, well, you've seen my videos, they take ages and ages to edit!! :) So hopefully, when I've cleared a few down I'll have time to do the cat sprinkler project, however, I'm about to film two EPIC things which will definately jump the editing queue! Thanks for the message, the cat sprinkler video is on the list but I really can't give a time for it to be edited as I still have more footage to take on it. So if I understand it correctly, in onder to go to first floor you where forced to go the reception on the ground floor regardless if you where above the first floor? I guess they didn't have keyswitches back then. But wouldn't using the stop switch render this security feature useless? (suppose it has a stop switch as this feature was more or less standard until automatic doors where introduced).

We will never know ;) Can't get into the lift car as it's boxed into the shaft with no access so I guess we will never know ;) But opening the gate while travelling would do the same.

Excellent video! Would the lift car have been controlled by an up-down lever inside the car as you see in a lot of vintage lifts? Would be great to get some pictures of inside the actual lift car. I hope all this equipment is preserved and put in a museum one day.

Unfortunately the lift car is in the middle of the shaft, and the shaft is completely closed off, else I would have loved to see it also. No, actually this lift would have a separate button for each floor. I know this because there is a relay per floor. As per the video, these relays keep the call active until the lift arrives at the floor. Not sure what buttons are in the lift car, but if you look at part 1 of these videos, there is a control box on the top floor. I don't think it's original though, as pressing the buttons you can feel a sort of "microswitchy" effect (click on-click off) when you press them - this definitely won't be original.

@@mrmattandmrchay The oldest call buttons I've seen were from the 1920s and they used a simple bronze spring pushed by a bakelite button, touching a fixed bronze pad. The Schlieren buttons have quite a bit of travel (almost 10 mm I'd say) and what surprised me most was how long you had to hold the button until the relays actually latched! I'd say close to a second!

When my son was very young (3-5) there was this evening show called BabyFirst that did some soothing music and different animations to it. One of them was this carousel with shapes that used to go up and down where the horses should be. Each time, slightly different music, and always different items (example, one carousel was a bee then on the next post was a flower. Another was a watermelon on one pole, then another fruit on the next. Anyway, the music came from here. I had no idea about the washing machine lol!

Thank you! I’ve been looking for that song because if I ever made a washing machine channel then I could use that in a Samsung washing machine brick destruction compilation lol! I wonder if anyone would notice lol? The song is actually Die Forelle (Or The Trout in English) by Franz Schubert, but I have and always will know it as the song that Samsung washing machines play at the end of each cycle. If you are not only a hand dryer/lift enthusiast, but also a washing machine enthusiast too like I am, you just can’t miss it! If you want to find it type in “Samsung washing machine song” and it will come up because it’s well known, even by people that aren’t even interested in washing machines. The Samsung dishwashers play it too, but it’s a lower-pitched and quieter version, which I personally don’t like as much, and the Samsung dryers play it also (The same as the washing machine version of the song). Anyway, yeah!

If i understand correctly when a call button pushed the triggers and latches the call relay thus sending power to the floor selecter and the up or down relay depending on Where the laft car is and and what floor it was called from if the relays are in sieries what,s to stop them bypassing the floor the selecter yeah Don't know much beyond the basics of lifts

+ELPaso1990TX Hello, I pretty feel sorry, At 1st from Monday til I finish the painting Job, I had to paint a huge elevator Motor room on an old factory, with would be changed into a technical museum for Industry work from the beginning til 1933. The walls in the Motor room, would be painted by a special white color, because during the evening houres it would be illuminated. Into the stairway from bottom to the top there became a painting of the Industry Revolution and on the top floor, where the main mercury arc reflector is located there comes a paint, that should be illustrated how he works. ( He works pretty good and it's very quite ) Also there are 3 elevators located in One machine room, one old fright elevator, one express from 1918 and a brand new one from 1924. All machines and the complete electrical stuff are new renovated and look quite nice. The pictures in the stairway that I should paint taking me about 5-8 Werks of work. The motor room should be finished on Wednesday and after that I start uploading the fist filmes, so mrmattandmrchay can edit them, if they like, also it's possible to upload all the paintings, or the work if thats liked. The main reason for me are the old lifts, because he is interesstred in them. OK. I hope I have helped you with these message. By the way. I use a normal Film camera with CD for storage, because I'm Not so good in filming, but I hope if I took a lot of RAW stuff mrmattandmrchay can handle that. cheerio Toni

+ELPaso1990TX PS: when I have to Do painting and decorating stuff I normally use oil, chalk and normal colors to paint pictures, when O have to renovate old paintings for e.g. in a church I try to mix the same color/paint there would be used at the 1st Time. So that meens Sometimes O mix different kind of stones, sand together to get the color, or I use plants, herbs ect. for coloring. hope that was helpful thank you for the contact, my Email [e-mail]. yes, I see what you mean. Although the heart of the Otis system was the carriage on the back of the selector. The rotary part was for precision levelling and wasn't always used on all Otis lifts.

I,m not native english speaker and the explanation due to birtish diction is very hard to follow. Why you british speak in such weird way eating consonants, twisting vocals and att he same time talk as if you have a perfect "polite" pronunciation?
