I loved how we finally saw Rebecca letting someone (Paula) in her own theatrical abstract space aka her deepest self. By doing that, she finally acknowledged a part of herself she was dissociated from. The most hidden, neglected and weird part of herself reveals to be the key to the happiness she'd craved all along. To me, that epiphany alone is the best ending I could have ever asked of this show.
@sassypants7536
@sassypants7536 5 жыл бұрын
Very very well said, I completely agree. She also was vulnerable enough to let someone into that space, to see the real her. Which I think is so scary and beautiful to be so vulnerable. It's like Brene Brown says '“If we can share our story with someone who responds with empathy and understanding, shame can't survive.” Paula has done that for Rebeccca. Rebecca has shown Paula her true self, and she was met with acceptance and love for who she is.

I honestly think it's still Rebecca and not Rachel on this. When you don't know where you're going, what you're doing, there's a weird comfort in returning to your old weary "crazy" self. In a sort of "Yes, of course, it was not going to work, I was not going to get better, I knew it" way. A sort of dark jubilation, even if it doesn't last, even if she genuinely wants to get better and be better...

Paula was the best middle age woman in TV period... What other middle aged woman is seen as the sexy icon, is the best singer, extremely extremely capable in both good and bad things, super hardworking, achieves her dream even after being told she couldn't make it so many times and not once was she EVER defined as the fat mom joke. I love Paula.

@@beckhampang191 and on top of that, she has her own issues that she works through and sets her own personal boundaries, that are respected and embraced by the people around her. She’s not this perfect, wise sage bc of her age, she’s just someone at a better stage in life, who takes this younger, more damaged woman under her wing to help her grow and develop. Paula is possibly the best character in CXG, a show full of incredible characters, and Donna Lynne brings her to life in the most brilliant and human way.

@@hkazu63 Completely. One of my favorite “keystone” moments in the show (honestly, all the important moments are my fav though 😭) is that moment where Paula and Rebecca ACTUALLY realize and address what’s unhealthy about their friendship dynamic; that was so important for both of their growth. The “friendship contract” they drew out is adorably appropriate for their profession as lawyers. But really, the fact of them having that real and important moment of conversation between friends was so gratifying in the growth it represented for them both.

I've seen a lot of people say that "oh they never put west covina in" and that with the west covina dress they played a brass version of "meet Rebecca". I think not including west covina was genius. That song was never about how she loved the town of west Covina. It was about her trying to convince herself that she didn't move there for josh. Notice how she doesn't face the west covina dress. it's always behind her. It's in her past. she's admitting to herself that she moved here for josh. she's done lying to herself. And she's done with that song. It's also important how they play meet rebecca instead of west covina. rebecca is meeting herself. She's going through what made her into her. The real her. But that's just a theory, a film theory! thanks for reading
@theoxenmafia8098
@theoxenmafia8098 4 жыл бұрын
Taking this one step further, though - notice the way that at the end of the final West Covina reprise with Paula, the camera stops with the West Covina dress framed perfectly between them. No longer behind her. (Aside - I think there's also something in the way she doesn't actually _sing_ "Meet Rebecca" here, we just get that instrumental quote - as though she's not _quite_ ready to actually meet Rebecca yet, not until Paula is able to step in and help her.)

Can we talk about one of the best character growths ever? The beginning of the series, she had bouncy short bobbed hair, a little more makeup, and her musical stylings were more reminiscent of classical theatre and classic genres. And now, her hair is still curly but more natural looking and she wears more casual clothing. Also the way she sings stupid bitch, she sounds more like she’s laughing back at herself instead of blaming herself in a sad way, it’s just amazing.

From a writing perspective, the series finale was genius. For four seasons, the viewers have been seeing Rebecca, this troubled soul, express her emotions, her pain, her joy, her love, her hate, in this remarkable way, while the rest of the cast is oblivious. We have followed this unacknowledged aspect of his brain while, for the most part, it is never confronted in the narrative. The ending though, the ending is exactly that, confronting not the pain she experiences, but what she makes with it. This remarkable ability she has becomes salvation for her like the viewers felt it was, in some ways, for us. It was flawless. The perfect wrap up to an incredible journey.

It's also very bland, which is I guess a good parallel to all the outfits we see in the stage. The outfit kinda represents the fact that she didnt find herself. I know it was for a production reason that she put on the Ruined Everything dress instead of having it on a mannequin, but I love it thematically. She goes back to that place where she could be incredibly self depreciating and spiral, but instead realizes and chooses not to. Instead chooses to see herself as a multifaceted person. This show still shakes me to my core years later.

WOW. I think we can all agree that Rebecca choosing to truly finding herself and pursuing her own happiness was PERFECT. Not going to lie, ofc I did get swept up in the shipping and I also had my opinions about who I wanted her to be with, and the last episode even heavily alluded to one person in particular. But I love how the most touching part of this finale was when all of the girls were there to support Rebecca in her songwriting, it was just so.... so damn lovely, and it was just straight up a moment of LOVE. I mean sure, the writers left the final scene open ended, so people may find themselves inclined to speculate on who she could still get into a relationship with, I mean, Maybe it’s Greg? Maybe Nathaniel? ....or none. But the thing is, that doesn’t even matter because it was never about who she “ends up with”. Rebecca did find love, just not in the traditional romantic comedy sense. Her journey continues on. Final remark. This mashup number was such a great recall to all the great moments of this series. I love how they finally fully acknowledge that Rebecca uses these songs as a mechanism to process her life.

I'm still in my grieving process about the ending episode; I saw this ending coming but I still feel sad because the most important song, finally her "I'm rebecca song" we never heard and also after investing so much time with these relationships we we're left in the dark. I feel like I need closure maybe. But it's just a show so I know I'll get over it. These extremely talented actors/actresses did a remarkable job. I truly appreciate that.

Aliz D10 I also had a strong feeling that this was how the show would finish, with her not making a partner selection. And believe me, I was pretty devastated when I looked at the clock, and saw that there was about a minute left before the episode would be over, realizing we, the audience, would not get to hear the song. I get where you’re coming from, about wanting the feeling of closure. But hey, life doesn’t make narrative sense, amiright? That would be saying that her story ends with a person, but it doesn’t, this is only the beginning.

I don't know what was the best thing about this episode. The idea behind this song. The lyrics. The delivery. The choreo ? George's ponytail bit ? The line 'I'm getting a pony' being about that ponytail ? The fact that then surved the timejump ? I mean a great quick joke having great power narratively like how brilliant was that. The fact that, while paying hommage and being reverent to the show, the characters and all of their journeys, the episode still managed to be thrilling and engaging ? The moving moment where all the girls encourage Rebecca in such a sweet simple and natural way ? Nathaniel stepping up to his father by saying I love you ? Nathaniel at the zoo ? Nathaniel talking about the horse, then the stable then the big diamond ? All of his scenes were knockouts - proving once more that Scott Michael Foster genius, making us fall in love with him when we thought there'd be no one after Greg. This rarely happens in TV. This episode, whilst being charged with the pressure of being THE finale was still one the funniest of the show. Again, rarely happens in Comedy TV. Pretty much never these days. And CrazyExGF is so much more than comedy as we all know. And obvisouly the ever so positive and intelligent and meaningfull and inspiring ending. Even though you kinda suspect where it was heading - in regards to the already sheer brilliance of Rachel Bloom and the entire writing team you expect to be surprise at that point, because it never went the easy way, AND YET it unfolded beautifully and the way the episode was structured was perfection. I could go on and on about so much more but I'll sum it up to this : Brilliant finale. A Six-Feet-Under level finale. P-E-R-F-E-C-T-I-O-N.

This put a whole new meaning to Meet Rebecca. The orchestra briefly imitating the "Meet Rebecca" and then going into "West Covina". The fact that her identity couldn't be put into a common theme or coherently explained from the very VERY beginning of this season- that struck a cord with me. Especially with the new discovery that Rebecca uses these songs to process her emotions. If that applies to the theme song then she's felt it subconsciously this whole season. But considering that the other theme songs were incorporated in the medley as her thoughts, one can assume... So basically, she considered herself "too hard to summarize" from the very beginning but it took a whole season for her to realize the magnitude of that initial thought.

Rachel Bloom, words can’t desrcibe what this show has meant to me. Never have I seen myself so wholly within media. There’s so much of my own journey that feels reflected in Rebecca Bunch’s, and that alone gives me so much hope. Thank you so much for everything! Best wishes for all that is next for you!

Same here!!! She’s so brave, be it by using the word “clitoris” on tv, by addressing mental health in a pragmatic manner, or by deciding not to diet and work out to have a “TV body”...the woman has done it all. Rebecca Bunch has resonated with me so much, Rachel Bloom is a goddess, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend will always have a special place in my heart ❤️

@Madeline, that's the power of stories. They stay with us, resonate with us, and sometimes provide us with some insight into this crazy thing we call... life. Amazing huh? Here's to the journey! I was so proud of Rebecca with this sing and how far she’s come it’s unbelievable the amount of growth she had this song always brings me to tears. Imagining the uncontrollable season 1 Rebecca to this season 4 Rebecca who recognizes her faults and worked on them I feel like a proud mom.

A perfect summary of the last 4 seasons, the journey Rebecca has taken to get to where she is, the versions of herself shes built on through her life in a medley of the main songs of her timeline, the musicals she made for herself to cope with her pain and made it into something truly beautiful. Looking back at the past and growing from her mistakes, changing the lyrics of her past songs to change the lyrics of her future songs. I balled my eyes out when I first watched this. Rachel, you're genius 👏

Dear Rachel, I was going to write a very sappy comment about how this show affected me through my depression, my decisions about future (one of which involves choosing psychology as my major) my relationship with my sexuality (thank you for the bisexuals...so many bisexuals) and lots of other things. But I already teared up like twice today because of you -and I don't do that very often- so let me just say thank you. Thank you for representing mental illness properly, for having such a diverse cast, for showing people that it's not too late to change, for creating this show which feels like home to me. I'll always find comfort in West Covina. so much for not being sappy amirite:d

I miss the show already. It's sad to know I won't see the characters again. But I'm also so happy, because you and Aline got the chance to tell Rebecca's story exactly how you wanted to. And more than that, I'm so grateful for the show's existence. It means so much to me and has done so much for me (and I can safely say this is true to so many fans). A huge thank you to you, Aline and the whole cast and crew. You made something magical.❤

This show meant so much to me, and honestly without it, it probably would have taken me years to realize that I have bpd. For so long something's been wrong and no amount of antidepressants could fix it, and I felt myself relating a scary amount to Rebecca. So when she finally got diagnosed, it was almost like I got diagnosed too. I'm still a long ways from having this whole thing figured out, but I cannot thank this show and Rachel Bloom enough for helping me feel less alone, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Okay so...we know that most of the show’s musical numbers take place in Rebecca’s imagination, where she is a much more talented singer than she is in real life. HOWEVER, out of the 129 songs on Crazy-Ex Girlfriend, only 91 feature Rebecca, or are directed at her. There are a few that would make some level of sense if the people were singing in real life (e.g. “Farewell Mustache” “Clean Up on Aisle Four.”) The 34 other songs are sung by Josh, Paula, Greg, Darryl, Heather, Valencia, Nathaniel, or groups of people when Rebecca is not even around. Does this mean that Rebecca imagines not only herself but also other people in musical numbers related to the situations they’re in? Or do all those other characters imagine themselves in musical numbers too? OR MAYBE...everyone else really is singing!
