this performance really takes out the romantic, heartbreaking aspect that was so very well performed by Santino in the show. This is like the other side of the coin. This is condescendingly and angrily highlighting everything that was fucking bad. And fuck am i glad that both of these versions exist readily available to me.

It's really hard to match Santino's version, and only Rachel can do that. I have to admit that this has become an alternative version of Shitshow I keep coming back to, because Rachel emotes very well, has the perfect inflections for every note, and makes it heartbreaking at all the right places. This is a much rawer, more straight from the heart version. The love that Rachel has for the arts and for songwriting in particular is evident.

If they were to land anyone with trying to match Santino's version, with all the talent and emotional context that went into it to make it what it is, it would have to be her. Both because it's Rachel Bloom, and OF CAUSE she can pull it off, but also, it wouldn't have been fair to ask anyone else.

I appreciate that she says this song is a) hard to write b) close to (all) our hearts. Feels very respectful to all involved. Obviously, in the actual show with Greg LEAVING(!) they had to make a big emotional number out of it, but I think this works SSOOO well! (but is it wrong that I want to hear a Santino Fontana version sung like this...?) In my head this is how Greg sings it to himself, when he's trying to get over her at Emory. Maybe because of his contract with Disney? (re: Frozen II in 2019). Disney seems to have pretty drastic rules about what actors under contract with them can and cannot do, and I'm not sure for how long actors are tied to Disney's rules once a film is released. Or maybe it's just Santino prioritizing other projects. At least, nothing points to him being in bad terms with the Crazy Ex team, if anything he said multiple times he'd like to come back if he had the opportunity, and he also said nice things about Skylar Astin. So that was probably just bad timing between the CXG show and his career and projects (at least I hope so!).
