The 2nd Night at the Museum movie was based in DC. It was called Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, or simply Night at the Museum 2. Fun Fact there are actually 20 Smithsonian Museums and galleries plus a zoo. Next time you go plan ahead write to your local Federal Congressperson or Federal Senator they can sometimes get you into private tours of federal buildings for their constituents. Years ago we got a tour at the National Archives and they brought out rare documents for us to view. We also go a tour at the US Mint.
@tvforeverus2 жыл бұрын
For DC you do really need to plan ahead by going to your congressperson’s website as only they can give you access to so many buildings that you normally cannot get into including the Supreme Court, Library of Congress, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Kennedy Center, and the US Capitol Building. And yes due to our current times many of the free Smithsonian museums that would normally be open 7 days a week are only open certain days of the week. I’m glad you saw the National Archives. Bottom line is when traveling to DC you need to do some research and planning ahead of time.

I grew up in the DC area, so no, no 8th grade field trip, although we did tour the Capitol in 6th grade. This was before the world went batcrap crazy, so we got to sit in the House gallery for a while and had lunch in one of the Capitol cafeterias. I attended college in the area also, and when I had to research term papers, I did it at the Library of Congress. It’s magnificent, and I hope you can come back and go inside someday. There’s plenty of life in DC, but not in the government/Mall areas.

Re the pictures. My dad took it for senior year in 1959. I took it with Girl Scouts in 1984 and my daughter went with her 8th Grade in 2014. Funny story. When we went as a family , and took a tour of the capital, my dad got lost! He followed the wrong group and ended up in the cafeteria, lol. Only because of his height did we find him. He was above the crowd. Pre cell phones, too. My mom was not happy. Good memories. Not sure if still there, you should go check out national Harbor. Its a fun place to visit.

I'm glad you at least saw the Watergate Hotel. When I was an Exec. Director for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, their HQ is in Bethesa, MD, I stayed at that hotel for a week. It was a very nice hotel, but a bit surreal knowing it was the location of the occurrences that took down an American President! During my stay at the Watergate Hotel, in February 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia exploded over Fort Worth, Texas, where I happen to live. (My colleagues and I found out about the explosion, as we waited for the hotel elevator, from Senator Bob Dole.) As you can imagine, when the shuttle exploded, everything in DC shutdown, and just like you experienced, DC became a Ghost Town!

So when you do go back to NYC and head to the museum of natural history(one of the best) know that it is donation pay. Like they offer you ‘suggested prices’ pay attention to the wording. Most people pay that naturally but it’s by donations! You can legit just pay a penny and still get in. Same for the MOMA and I strongly suggest to do both. One is one one side of central part and the other is on the other side. You can just walk straight through the park and be there without worrying about the busses of subway transportation for that day.

If you’ve been to DC a few times, I always recommend going to the smaller Smithsonian museums that most don’t go to. National Portrait Gallery, museum of native Americans, there are so many that rarely get screen time. The FBI is alway a laugh to see some of the seized assets. Fly out of Washington Dulles and take a day for the Air and Space museum annex, watch Transformer’s 2 the day before and really mourn not getting to see it at the IMAX in the annex when it was released.

Fun fact- the East side of the Capitol that faces the Supreme Court is the front. The statue on top of the rotunda faces East because the planners thought DC would build out that way, so the statue would be facing most of DC. The opposite happened though. Anyway, the back of the Capitol is where the Inaugurations happen and where the scaffolding is.
