(...) I am in the habit of attaching a story or a meaning to each piece of music. They are not intended to reveal some ultimate truth, but simply to act as humble guidelines for my own interpretation. I have always intuitively imagined Elgar's Concerto as the recapitulation of an interior journey, an exploration into the meaning of life and death. Each movement could be interpreted as a step towards answering these questions: the opening phrase at the beginning of the first movement formulates the question, which is followed by the search of an answer in the observation of nature. Paul Meyer once told me that he found the famous principal theme to be "champêtre"; it makes absolute sense to me and now I cannot play it any other way.The second movement is a fanciful flight into a magical, light-hearted and cheerful world, which is why I decided to use a rather lively tempo and emphasise its capricious character. The third movement emphatically declares love as the reason for living (with its longing "tenuti"); the fourth expresses the wisdom of a mature man who has learned to enjoy life in all its variety. It combines the statements of the previous movements and ends with a sublimation of the initial question. (...)

That was among the best Elgar Cello Concerto performances I have heard!

I will tell you something in secret. For many people, telling this could be a terrible sin, but... your first phrase is better than du Pre’s. I had to watch It again and again because I couldn’t believe that it was only one cello playing. Your sound is the most powerful I have heard in a cellist. Thank you, maestra!

Thank you very much Javier! This is indeed a strong compliment which lightens up my day 🙏🙏 if you are a cellist, I can explain that I really did mean for it to be as full as possible, and as a tool I used direction, natural weight and bow speed, considering that the first 2 chords are building up to the third one, and using the natural weight of the bow (upbow going back to the frog) on the second chord which people otherwise play downbow, often resulting in the line being broken and the intensity at the end of the bow being "pressed down into" (=tensed) instead of "pulled out of" (=full) the cello. 🎶🎵

Nadège Rochat I would love to watch your performance of Schumann cello concerto! Since Daniil Shafran, nobody plays it with such a depth in the right hand... Have you played it?
@@esp19691 thanks Javier. I actually just recorded Schumann concerto with @orchestredechambredetoulouse this August, it will probably be out in winter or spring. That will be a cello and string version. I absolutely love Danil Shafran 😊 he will always be unique.

Nadège Rochat Do you remember how Shafran played open strings in Schumann’s? (No other cellist do it that way, nor even Rostropovich). ... WOW Nadège! I'm really looking forward to seeing you play it !!!

The way how Elgar instrumentalized the Brass instruments towards the end of the 1st mvt, before the pizzicato parts but also during the pizzicato parts is incredibly powerful. What an orchestrator and what a composer!

In humble opinion, in a concert is all about the soloist instrument. Th orchestra may, at times come up with a fanfare in recognition of the soloist, but is the soloist who is the main focus of the concerto.

Rochat is very pretty and young, but that doesn't matter it is all about how she performs. The way she plays her cello takes the attention form every thing else. She has positioned her self to be one of the top cellist with Weilerstein, Gua, Kobehina among many others, Today there are more female cellist going "up the ranks" that male cellist. That's great, I think!
