I dedicate this to my late father who died on the 20th January 2024. who respected, admired and enjoyed all of Elgars works. God I miss him, part of Sevenoaks died when my father died. I wrote a poem for dad’s funeral Our father the lightning bolt. With a screwdriver in one hand and cable in the other, He always knew one from the other, From Houses, to Shops, to churches alike, to knole house, to London, dad wired them right. Never sad, always a smile, you could hear him whistle before his arrival. He helped everyone at the drop of a hat, never denied anyone, not even a cat. He was one of kind, he was liked by all, So I ask, please please Remember his smile. Remember his humour, dry and full of wit, He always called us his two little twits. Take a walk in the park Watch the deer's play fight, He will be there walking with you But only in the light. Listen to the breeze, Hear the birds sing, He will be there with you In memory and kin. 'Life is for living' Please remember those words. Our dad, the lightning bolt. The man of Sevenoaks. Written by his Eldest daughter Amanda Evelyn Cover-Goodall the day after he passed.

I'm sorry for your loss; a beautiful dedication. My dad died in January 2001 and I still miss him. Music like this reminds me of him, too, as he was a proud Brit even though he emigrated to Canada many years ago. May the music and memories sustain you in your time of sorrow.

Every time I hear this music, what impresses me about Elgar's writing is this. He could have ended the piece with a great crescendo, a big blasting finale. Instead, after the emotional climax, it softens to a beautiful, quiet finish. Genius move, so satisfying. Superb performance.

You are one of the FEW who truly appreciate the importance of tempo in this piece... which MUST have its due... wherein EVERY note is played it's fullest as layers of sound create such an emotionally powerful piece !!
@MaryBethMcCoy
@MaryBethMcCoy Ай бұрын
I completely agree! The tempo is so important. The flow of the music is defined by the tempo. It is crucial for this piece so that each note can be savored, and each phrase can slowly build upon the next to reach an emotional crescendo, then gently fade to a whisper at the conclusion. Most renditions I have heard, as you rightly point out, rush the tempo so much that the true beauty of the music cannot be fully appreciated. Neville Mariner, however, was a master at his craft and this sublime performance will remain unmatched in its ability to touch the human soul.

Mariner REALLY "steps on the gas" at 2:17 and has the trumpets SING over top of the rest of the orchestra... until that EXQUISITE area at about 3:08... which is unbelievably SUBLIME... as the tympani COMPLETE the full picture !!!

I think this is a brilliant rendition. I listened to Bernstein's version just before this and it was over-egged. This just lets the music speak for itself, with a hint of quiet restraint, making it even more dramatic.

Sir Neville Marriner was the most friendly conductor, whom I ever met. He was a real gentleman. Conducting Nimrod it sounds more natural than usual. Others abuse this pathetic and melancholic piece for a kind of soul striptease. Not Sir Neville. Someone like him will never come again. I miss him.

Saludos
