I lived in the Keys for 35 years. This time of year, should be lots of nice schools of greenies. Look for the diving pelicans in the shallows. One throw of the cast net will get you enough bait for all day. Out back look for deep water under the mangroves, especially the ones surrounded by flats, the big snappers will be stacked up thick in some places. Anchor up on an incoming tide and free line baits up under the trees. Live pinfish make great bait but only if under 3 inches. If no bites within 5 minutes, move. Those 'Cudas are hands down the best shark bait. Anchor on the edge of a grass flat when the current is moving across it. Use steel leader wire and chunks of cuda for bait. Hang the cuda carcass from your kayak for chum and you can sight cast sharks all day. Have fun and don't get bit! I really enjoy your channel.

It's interesting the way locals in different parts of the world class certain fish as "rubbish" or "nuisance" fish - even when catch and release fishing. For me it's all about the fun and the fight. I appreciate your attitude to 'cudas . Why not enjoy a big, fast, hard-fighting fish? Thanks for another great vid.
@TrueWord662 жыл бұрын
I was gonna say exactly right but in freshwater also I see myself doing the same thing. Gars and paddlefish (spoonbills) are a nuisance.

Hello sir. Just got back from islamorada (75 1/2 bayside). Been going there for 22 years now in early December. Your friend was right about the hammerheads. We were seeing 10 footers by my pier! Hooked into one and fought it for almost an hour until it wrapped around a trap. Seeing the hammerheads this time of year was a first for me. Plenty of lemons, bulls and black tips. Great video!

Excellent video Elias, great fishing on the kayak. Cuda are excellent eating, the caveat being that the big fish may carry the ciguatera as they accumulate the toxin and over the years we see occasional news reports of people getting ciguatera poisoning from eating large barracuda in south Florida. I have eaten small cuda, caught freelining live bait by fishing piers, say no bigger than 5lb. They are awesome to eat and a lot of fun to catch. The fastest strike I ever got casting a 2 ounce spoon was from a big cuda that streaked on top like a lightning bolt. The tube lures are made from surgical tubing and very easy to replicate, green has always been an excellent color for me.
