We have a new apple tree which we are excited to get planted but we also have plans to move our other trees which will affect when and where we plant it. So how do I look after a new bare root tree until I get it planted into its permanent place? And how will the winter weather affect that?
Yet again the cold snap and frozen ground has delayed our plans but today it's warm and the ground has defrosted so we are going to move our 5 trees, but as usual, mother nature isn't playing ball and we have a storm due to hit this afternoon, so we have to be quick.
Fruit tree fun, both productive and ornamental

Glad the storms didn’t cause much damage to your garden (from the looks of it). I recently found this channel and it has been an absolute joy! It’s so difficult to find gardening channels and blogs based in the same area as you, so this has been a treat! I have always been interested in growing veg but the conditions have always been wrong (north facing, flats etc). I now finally have a south facing garden and I cannot wait to get started (greenhouse is on the list). Your channel has given me so much more confidence to take that leap.

I'm glad you managed to get your trees planted/transplanted. Whenever I think about doing winter jobs I always imagine having loads of time, being really careful and exact about things, in reality it's exactly like the spring/summer, you have to rush out on the one day where the weather is actually ok and try to get as many things done as you possibly can 😂 I hope your trees do well for you. What will you put in front of the greenhouse now? I also saw you had one of those tall green vertical container pot things that look great, are they as productive as they look? Take care 😊
@eliandkate
@eliandkate Жыл бұрын
We won't be putting anything in front of the greenhouse as part of the reason we moved the trees was because the pots got in the way. We do have plans to reuse the pots though :D The vertical planter is awesome, it's a greenstalk and you wouldn't believe what I've managed to grow in it.... got lots more plans for it for during the new season.

No don’t worry, these do get laden with fruit but they don’t bend. The fruit grows very close to the trunk so there isn’t that issue with the weight further out. We do have real problems with wind here as we are an exposed costal garden but they do fantastic, even in the pots for the last couple of years

Good job! I already mentioned I bought dwarves a few years back because columnar were not sold then. The orchard guy said I could train them. Now that they are available maybe I will move two as I planted them close to train columnar style. I’m not even sure we can grow fruit as nothing has produced so far. Hope to see something this year. May have to stick with berries as all kinds of those are doing well. Grew peaches, ect. 2 miles away. Must be too low and subject to frosts. I don’t know, could be the soil and heat also as it took me a few years to realize I need shade for radishes. The temps here are erratic. Yea, we put the cables across and everything for support as they will need it.

I don't believe you. Fantastic, as always! Eli, I’ve got a completely unrelated question, and wondered if you could enlighten me. Based on your success with growing King of the North peppers, I ordered some seeds, which I sowed on the 11th January and have growing under lights. I’m a bit concerned because the leaves have turned a kind of deep browny purple, having emerged green. There’re no true leaves yet, just the cotyledons. The stem is also a similar colour. Is this normal for King of the North, or could my plant be in some way unhappy? Has anyone else have the same experience?
@eliandkate
@eliandkate Жыл бұрын
No that’s not good. Not knowing your set up it’s hard to say but the leaves turning yellow or brown can be because the lights are too close…. Or leaves and stem turning purple can be because they are stressed and not taking up nutrients (this can happen when they are too cold). It’s hard to say but no it’s not normal

if it's dropping the fruit (is that what you mean) it's usually because the plant doesn't feel it can cope... so we get something here called June drop (although can be june or july), where the plant will drop any fruit it feels it can't bring to ripe... to avoid it we reduce the amount of fruit on the plant, usually down to just a couple per spurr. It might be the plant trying to tell you it needs more watering and nutrition?
@cpoco

@@eliandkate I think it's kind of like that but it's still only it's second year and the fruit don't get beyond about marble size so I think it's just not established enough to bring any to full size. I'll see how it goes next season.
