Eventually, when I traveled to that part of the world, I visited Ukraine, the heart of the Soviet military machine. Wonderful people that were as curious about me as I was about them. I loved the food, culture and the people. They had many ideas they gathered from television or the internet. They asked about gays, our military, families and fast food and cars. Being Latino, I added another dimension because I also spoke Spanish. So, by some claims, I am conservative and in other areas I am more progressive/liberal. Russian security services have arrested U.S. citizens on spurious charges, denied them fair and transparent treatment, and have convicted them in secret trials and/or without presenting evidence. Russian officials may unreasonably delay U.S. consular assistance to detained U.S. citizens. Russian authorities arbitrarily enforce local laws against U.S. citizen religious workers and open questionable criminal investigations against U.S. citizens engaged in religious activity. Another great video. This is one of many things I love about your videos - you actually talk to Russians and ask them directly about their perceptions about certain topics. It so simple but so brilliant at the same time because especially these days, it’s hard not to be swept away by the propaganda machine that operates in hyperdrive right now. In this context, I am writing this as an American. Overall, I think the perception of Americans by Russians is a closer to reality than the perception of Russians by Americans. So, let’s tackle some of the easy ones first: yes, Americans are fat, and the difference in obesity rates as of 2021 between the U.S. and Russia is ~36% vs 23%. Seems like a significant difference. Secondly, do Americans like or dislike Russians? This is s difficult topic. First, Russophobia is very real in America, especially now that every warmonger in American political and corporate circles feels like it’s their moment to pile on. So much so that it’s perfectly ok to openly discriminate against Russians in the current climate in the same way that it is absolutely unacceptable to discriminate against anyone else. That is driven by the U.S. government, its supporters in the media and corporations. And yes, you guys in Russia, even if you think you are young and progressive, have to understand. Our politicians make no difference between the younger generation and the older ones or the government. For the U.S. government, everything Russian is bad. At this time inside of the U.S., Russia is being portrayed as the absolute worst place on the planet. Our political/media/corporate class makes no difference between the Russian government and the Russian people. And I think you can see the effects of this Russophobia right now in your county with most major companies and brands having abandoned you guys. Secondly and MOST IMPORTANTLY, we - the American people - have no problems with Russia. Sure, there are some that live for the constant barrage of propaganda and completely buy into it, but MOST OF US LIKE RUSSIA AND RUSSIANS. Don’t EVER forget that. The U.S. is a wonderful country, just like Russia, but it’s also a horrific serpent when it comes to geopolitics. So, please Dear Russian Friends, don’t confuse the position of our U.S. government with the attitude of many of us who are mere citizens of the U.S. - we love you, we love, and are in awe of the role that Russia has played in the world for a thousand years, and we want to have great relations with you. But you do need to be aware that at this time, there is an insane propaganda-driven backlash against Russia through the Western world. It’s irrational, it’s stupid, it’s self-destructive for all of us, and it’s demeaning to the Russian people. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Unfortunately. All I can say at this time as an American, is this: Russian people - we continue to love you!
@ialreadyknew71322 жыл бұрын
You wrote a great comment, I think it's important for most Russians to know the whole truth. It is very sad that your government does not like us and does not divide the government and the people. This is important for those who want to build a career with you, because guys are fired only because you are Russian, even if you have an American passport. but you have Russian parents and you were born in Russia. You are a very good Russian government propagandist. Most Americans would love to embrace any Russian citizen, except those involved in the outrageous and illegal invasion of the free country of Ukraine. It is not a part of Russia, ruled by Nazi's etc, etc that the current Russian government would have their citizens believe via their propaganda. That is why the vast majority of free countries in the world do not equate the current behavior of the Russian government with the behavior of peaceful nations. Personally, I have never understood why Putin and his yes men, view Nato as the enemy. The Russian people would seem to be natural allies with the Western powers. I like to think that one day when Putin is thrown out of power, Russia will take their rightful position as a leader within a free society allied with the West. That does not mean Russia has to abandon their cultural values.

The United States and Russia have had a generally turbulent relationship, with some exceptions. One of those exceptions was the American Civil War. England and France generally supported the Southern Confederacy, while Russia under Tsar Alexander II supported the Union. As a show of support Russia sent units of their navy to New York, and San Francisco. There was almost an incident where a joint American-Russian naval unit engaged the British Royal Navy. Alexander promised the American ambassador that if England/France declared war on America, he would come in on the American side. The history of the world would have taken a very different turn had that happened. Russia fought England and France in the Crimean War of the 1850s which explains the Tsar's support for the Union.

@@user-wr7ci In the US, we don't like our presidents and politicians because they don't work together to solve problems and make things better for us. I don't like Putin because he only does what he thinks is best. I don't think he really cares about the people.

Nope, that’s just you sir, if someone came to me and asked me the same questions about Russia, I would answer it all quite easily. Go outside and talk to some real Americans instead of painting a broad brush 🤦♂️

I'm American, from California. This is very interesting. Some stereotypes are true (we are friendly and generally pretty tolerant and non-judgmental). But we are all individuals and this is a big diverse place. I'm not fat, and can't remember the last time I ate fast food.

Theres a lot of fat Americans statistically. But yes, even the anti-immigrant crowd tend to not be hienous towards visitors. Although that seems to be waning in recent years.

Eli thanks for the wonderful content. Great to see the varied Russian opinions, values, and ideas. Very much enjoying learning about places I will not get a chance to visit and see that even if we are different in some things we are also very same in others.

"They drive to the park, run there, then drive back." I felt that in my soul. I think it's due to our conditioning, being forced to drive everywhere. I live near the gulf of Mexico. Biloxi, Mississippi

one thing that my travels have led me to see through open eyes, if people listens to stereotypes that other people put forward they tend to see the world through a very small lens. think for yourself and see what you learn for yourself.

What’s interesting is how intelligently and directly the questions are answered. Very refreshing.

I never understood why many of my Russian friends and former colleagues are so obsessed with the USA. While the Russian and European norms and cultural values are much closer together. I as a Dutchman would feel happier in Russia than in the United States.(and I speak from experience) About LGHBTHWTFKWHTFC. Why is that (subculture) so important when no one should care or be interested in what someone feels privately for someone. In my opinion, sexuality is a private matter that should not be anyone's business except in the private sphere. but if you scream for the attention you will get it whether you like it or not. Do what you want but stop yelling for attention

@@briantafolla2247 Depends on where you go. In St. Petersburg you will be fine (it is the most European city in Russia) I don't know about Moscow, haven't been there for a long time, but I guess, it is pretty much the same as St. Petersburg. Having said that, I have to admit that homophobia does exist in Russia, so, I would advise not to display your affection for your boyfriend openly in public (if you travel together) and to avoid openly gay dress style.
