freaking excellent lesson on the subtleties of left hand technique. Not enough people talk about the dangers of bad position, or so eloquently and clearly describe the options that give you results and avoid injury. Bravo Mr. Gilbert :)

I’ve been playing banjo for over 40 years and still haven’t even come close to feeling comfortable playing Sally Goodin. Thanks for all the healthy tips.

Hi Eli; Earl said that the rhythm section (i.e., Jake) played it that way because Earl told him to. Earl said, "I wanted him to come down on the E note (Key of A) when I wanted to emphasize the E chord part of it on my banjo. So he went along, playing it backwards, and the E note would come up at the right time". Sorry for the repitition if you've already heard that.

Thanks Eli. Now I can blame the bass in the recording for being a half step off for my struggle! Great observation and very helpful. I need to revisit SG today.

Your comments about the actual melody of the song hit home with met. Hearing the melody has always been my problem on this one and sometimes on other Scruggsy stuff, but especially on Sally G. (Earl left a nice opening for Bill Keith and Bobby Thompson!) Thanks for your insights.

oh my, and I've just started learning this with Amazing slowdowner, and totally thought Earl's string bend was coming on beat 1 lol. I was like why did Earl phrase like that, it doesn't follow the melody? Must be just a cool variation. And when the timing of the intro was throwing me. Wow. Great lesson here man.
