I was there (novice Old-Time)! Beautiful capture of both the visuals and sounds. Teared up at images with Old Lamp Lighter. Thank you.

Great compilation Eli. Really admire your banjo playing and it was great to hear your approach to the banjo in person. Many of us look up to you not just because your such a tall fella but because your a great picker, great teacher and all around great guy.

Looks like a fun time hanging out with all the banjo/guitar players. I want to thank you for taking the time to figure out & film your 30 day class for beginners. I am 63, never learned how to play 22 years ago, & decided that now retired-I can do it. 😊

Hi! Thanks for the video 🙏 I'm really struggling to keep track of what beat I'm on when doing the stream of high B 16th-notes (G without the capo) on the first string. It doesn't help having the bar of 2/4 beforehand(!) Do you have any tips for this? I can imagine one answer is 'just don't worry about it' 😅

Good lesson. The banjo has so many wonderful timbres available that many players pay no attention to because they are stuck near the bridge. Béla Fleck often plays near the neck or over the neck, and his banjo is about as expressive as they come. My ears have come to prefer my banjos with the resonators off (if I don’t need them when playing out). I love my Bart Reiter open-back with a Whyte Laydie tone ring. Also, my Rickard with a Dobson tone ring. My new toy is a handmade C. Waldman open-back with a Douglas fir tone ring and a two-ply pot. It weighs only four pounds! I actually have nylons strings on it. Its sweet spot is over the scoop on the neck. These all have lovely, intimate yet loud banjo tones, even if Earl wouldn’t use them.

True, true, true. There are and have always been marginalized people playing bluegrass and narratives around "white music" or "hillbilly music" erase that diversity. Lots of work to be done obv

Thank you for filming these video's! I am a 63 year old grandma, who bought a Deering banjo 25 years ago. Life got in the way of me learning how to play at the time. Well, now is the time, as I still want to learn, & show my granddaughter if I can learn, she can learn her violin! 😂

Thanks Eli for the lesson. I know you have always said in previous videos the best way to learn is to listen and watch. I have always found learning songs from Tab time consuming. As eventually you have to commit to memory anyway , learning a bar or two at a time. In way this is a quicker this way and not have use tab as a crutch. So thank you for these ideas. And will try and learn this way in the future.

Please someone help me For the love of god I can’t make the d chord. My fingers are short. Input my middle finger on the 3rd string of the second fret but my index can’t fully go down on the second string first fret.

My comment isn't directly related to the video, but I feel compelled to post it. I want to thank you, Eli, for all your videos. I started playing the banjo at 12 without a teacher because I live in France, where the banjo is a very rare instrument. I had to learn on my own, thanks to the Internet and especially thanks to your KZbin channel, along with Banjo Ben's, Ricky Meir's, HBD's channels and many others. After 10 years of playing Bluegrass banjo, I recently learned the stunning "Revenge of the Tentacle Dragon" by Béla Fleck and can now play it. This achievement fills me with immense pride, and my progress would have been impossible without excellent instructors like you. Thank you for all your hard work and for the invaluable service you provide to young banjo players around the world. I love our small banjo community. Greetings from France!! Please excuse my English, this is not my native language.

I've been trying for a while, and I still can't finger the "11" on the 2nd string only, but I've found that if I don't worry about whether I'm touching the 1st string, and I lift my finger immediately after that "11", I can then play the "9" on the first string, and it doesn't sound too bad, plus I get a head start on moving my little finger to "10". Of course, Eli's fingering it cleanly and moving his finger after the "9", and hopefully I'll be able to do this eventually.
