Elijah Craig Barrel Proof A120 Bourbon Review! Head to Head Tasting Against A119

In Southeast Michigan I have been very lucky. I have Batches A117 - A120 open in my collection and never paid over $70 (which I paid for a C918 last week, otherwise, $60). I still measure against the B517 that won WOTY for the Whisky Advocate magazine. In my opinion, It always seems to me that the A's are oaky, the C's are sweet, and the B's are in the middle. The truth is that I always feel like I am nitpicking. All the batches are better than at least 70% better of the bourbons out there! That is why I also have backups! I sure hear ya though on the Michigan being way behind. I just found the A120 last week! Great review Chris! I gotta agree on the A120. I’m usually not lucky on allocated stuff but I’ve ran into and bought 3 bottles of it. One on the best finishers in bourbon too!

I’m an outlier and love B519. So many flavors come out w the lower proof without all that heat. I can drink it more often too... I do love A120 🥵 , and calling it now, it’ll be up for whiskey of the year.

I did a blind tasting video with A918 through A120 and the B519 was actually my favorite. I must be an outlier too!

I also love the b519. The proof makes it drink smoother, but the flavor is still there.

My first ECBP experience was C919 and it is amazing so I couldn’t wait for the next release. I picked up A120 and I might like it even more. The oily rich feel is overwhelming in the best way. Nice review.

Great review, Chris! I recently got my hands on EC C919 and I had the same reaction at first sip, my pallet was lit up! After the initial blast, the flavor was outstanding. How would you compare the A, B, and C batches (if you've tasted them all)? thanks!

In general I am a fan of the c batches the last 3 year, b batches I have only tried the b519 none before that. Didnt blow me away like the C919 did. A120 is coming out of the gatesting, we will see how the next 2 releases compare!,

I recently had this for the first time. I couldn’t believe how good it was, considering I don’t like their regular small batch. I’ve been searching for a bottle of this barrel proof and it’s been hard to find. Now I know why. It’s damn good!

I prefer ECBP myself, but KCSBR120 is great! Deeper ticker barrel notes come thru on the ECBP to me usually

I have to agree. ECBP is amazing juice. I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. Put it up against Stagg Jr Batch 12 vs ECBP B518 and ECBP won. I was surprised. Even more surprised Elijah Craig small batch was winning my $30-35 bourbon blinds with Buffalo Trace a close 2nd. Heaven Hill really killed it with the Elijah Craigs.

I agree, there isn't much of a better value line of whiskey out there in my opinion. All solid offerings at a decent price. I love Stagg Jr. that's for sure, but Elijah Craig barrel proof often wins in blinds for me as well

Hi Chris my cousin who’s live in Washington DC got me a bottle of Elijah Craig 18 and he paid $350 US dollars for it it’s so expensive for a bourbon to make it worse he can’t even send it to Australia that’s where I live dames !

I consider you to be very knowledgeable. So maybe you can help an old new whiskey drinker. For 60 years of my life I didn't drink whiskey. Considered it nasty and like medicine. Oh the sting! But a couple years ago a friend had me try American Honey. It was like dessert with a sting. I loved it. And my wife finishes every bottle I have purchased since. I get 1.5 ounces and she gets the rest! This is because it is too sweet for me. But this led me into whiskey. Watched review videos and have purchased several bourbons, Irish and Scotch. Not compelled to buy Canadian. I'm 61 years old now and trying to find my favorite whiskey. You said in your video that a bourbon you tried was too sweet for you. One thing I have realized by purchasing all my whiskeys is that I favor sweet over wood/smoke and leather. But I have yet to find a whiskey that is naturally sweet without adding vanilla or fruit flavors. My absolute favorite whiskey right now is Knob Creek Smoke Maple. But I can't drink it everyday because it is too sweet and the sweetness is due to adding maple flavoring, right? What would you recommend for a newbie who wants to be able to taste sweet elements but is not an adulterated whiskey? So far I favor Bourbons over Irish and Scotch as I find the taste profile pleasing relatively. But even my bourbons I wish tasted a little sweeter and less harsh, but just not too sweet like flavored added whiskeys. I purchased Angels Envy thinking port barrels would make the bourbon sweeter. Nope. The nose is very weak to me and I always ended up choosing the Elijah Craig Small Batch instead, although it is not my favorite. Sidenote: I bought a cheap bottle of Old Forester 86 two weeks ago and when I smelled it, it was really pleasing. Then I tasted it and was shocked I could pick out flavor notes. That was cool. I loved it (though I want a little sweeter). But since then it hasn't tasted the same. What??? Yesterday I bought Old Forester 100 as someone said it got high marks. I like the 86 better. Does any of this rambling tell you anything? Should I give up on Bourbon?

Never give up on bourbon! I would watch my episode I just put out a week ago about best bourbons for non whiskey drinkers! All really good starters and most very sweet. The most vanilla forward bourbon I have had is woodford reserve double oaked. Like chocolate vanilla whipped cream to me. It is finished in a second barrel which gives it almost marshmallow qualities to me. Give it a go and let me know what you think! Bourbinsane Bought a bottle of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Barrel Picked. It tasted of strong oak to me. It had a sweetness to it, but the alcohol seemed to overwhelm it to me. As a rookie, I don't think this is what I'd call an 'introduction' whiskey. I drank this 3 days straight (obviously with hours break between lol!) to see how I would feel about it. I get a woody caramel nose with the overlay of paint thinner (the alcohol burn in the nose). Letting it breathe some, I then can nose a butterscotch like scent, pleasantly sweet. Kettle corn too. This didn't translate to the taste though, as I struggle with the oak taste being overwhelming. So this newbie needs sweet to trump oak/woody. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof as one claimed on Reddit?
