I'm guessing the vibration difference is mostly due to the cng engine having close to half the compression ratio then the diesel.

In the 80s in the rural area I grew up in, it was very popular for people to convert their farm pickup trucks to run on CNG. In fact, my very first vehicle once I got my license was an old farm truck running on CNG. It seemed to die out in the late 90s but it was common for farm pickups way back when.

LPG was cheap in 80s and 90s. In construction some contractors ran trucks on it. Then late 90s prices went up and the tanks went back to gas and diesel.

This is just a modern rendition of the propane powered tractors from 50-70 years ago. It’s so quiet and low vibration because the compression ratio is a fraction of the diesel counterpart. The lower compression ratio and less energy dense CNG fuel will mean this tractor is probably the lowest HP rating in the series. If CNG is readily available this is a great solution but compressor stations are VERY VERY expensive. Having worked for a Class 8 OEM and done a ton of integration work on the current generation Cummins N designation CNG engines they are great to operate and can reduce operating costs. CNG engines reject a ton of waste heat so I’d be interested to see if this machine can keep itself cool at 100% load on a high ambient temp day. Good on CNH for offering farmers the option!

It's only bad w/r/t climate change when you release it to the atmosphere unburned. When combusted co2, is co2 and no different then disel. However the other emissions not co2 related are way cleaner with methane/cng. Making a methane capture system for manure is not easy or cheap but cool if it works!

This is in a way going back to the roots of the diesel engine because it was one of Rudulf Diesel's intentions of his engines that would allow farmers to power them with the seed oils that could be grown on their farms. Now this is going to use manure and other sources to make biogas (BGA for the Farming Simulator players out there) for it's power source.

You say @2:45, "you've probably been on a Fiat bus or something powered by cng". I thought I'd tripped over a break in the matrix! Then I remembered you're in southeast PA. :-) Or perhaps you meant to be directing that at our European friends here. But I daresay most yank viewers (of an ag persuasion) probably don't ever ride any bus. The vast spaces just don't make it feasible. (Saying that for our fellow viewers who are more... metropolitan.) As for school buses, maybe that's a different story, on there perhaps Fiat or cng-powered even in the hinterlands. I'd not heard of it. But perhaps I'm showing my own boomer bias here in fly-over country. :-)

So what is the cost difference between the two versions ? Back in the 50's - 60's the few natural gas tractors that were around, needed fewer oil changes as they did not dirty their oil as fast. The internals were much cleaner in the natural gas versions than in the diesel versions.

Depends on what the cost of CNG is in your area most likely, and how easily you can get it....where I live you gotta drive 30-40 miles away to get CNG...so its pointless in my area....other areas probably not as much of an issue...but rural areas, are not where these tractors will roam because you aren't going to find a CNG station anywhere around.

Fiat Industrial was a branch company split off, and has nothing to do with Fiat automobili on a business, design and manufacturing level. It has been CNH Industrial since 2012 when CNH Global became large enough to merge with Fiat Industrial, its then parent company (although still majority owned and controlled by the Agnelli family). So Fiat, now part of Stellantis, and Fiat Industrial, now called CNH Industrial, are both majority owned by the same parent, but are not the same. It is a long and confusing procession of reorganizations and mergers, but hopefully that simplifies it. CNH has satellite headquarters in Britain, the U.S. and Italy. BTW the blue on New Holland tractors comes from Ford, as when Ford bought New Holland in 1985, New Holland didn't make tractors. New Holland's livery colors were red and yellow. This continues to a degree on the equipment and harvesters, but the tractors are all Ford blue. I had to brush up on all this, as I remembered there was a reorganization or two. I didn't remember that many....Edit, also all the engines for New Hollands and Case tractors are made by IVECO. It is a much bigger PITA to convert a diesel to CNG than a gas, and even moreso if it's forced induction. Also, there are no high pressure fuel pumps (or for that matter, fuel filters) and that may be part of the vibration reduction as well as the lower compression ratio. The engine may also be a completely different displacement unit as well.

Torque will be a lot less. Methane is not a one for one swap volume wise as it has a lot less BTU's (energy) per gallon. BUT it can be cheaper, mechanically. The major roadblock is how to fuel it on a small to medium farm. I'll not trailer it to fuel stations and as I do not do dairy, cant make my own... although my wife says I can almost do it by myself.

I didn't catch, but did you say if it is spark (like gasoline) or compression (like diesel) ignition? I expect spark, as that is "normal" for NG engines. Also spark ignition has less vibration because of the ignition timing. But spark ignition does mean spark plugs, which need maintenance.

I think the lack of vibration is because of Less of an explosion in the CNG FUEL. Is the horsepower and torque the same as diesel engine? Is it more cubic inches then diesel to make up for less energy in the fuel?

Any thoughts on cost of fuel savings vs diesel
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 14 күн бұрын
That would depend on what the cost of CNG is in your area....as well as how far you have to drive in order to get it....pretty much every fuel station has diesel....very few have CNG, and are usually a totally separate place altogether and nowhere close to where they'd need to be in order for a CNG engine to make any sense to most buyers....closest CNG filling point from my place is 30-40 miles depending on which way I go...so don't make sense at all in my area....now someone living on the other side of the valley that's close by wouldn't be an issue for sure. I have no clue how much CNG costs, diesel is around $3.69 to $4.00 a gallon in my area....but with what I do I only go through maybe 10 gallons of diesel a year since I just have a small tractor that I use on occasion LOL.

That would be my guess.....its a 30-40 mile one way drive to the nearest CNG station where I live....so CNG is useless in my area LOL. The thing is nobody has manure digesters either LOL. @wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 14 күн бұрын
Its just like a regular gas engine, just different injectors and fuel pumps....and yes, they have spark plugs rather than glow plugs as its just like burning regular gas VS diesel which is ignited through compression rather than spark plugs. There aren't any glow plugs either, as pre-heating the cylinders isn't necessary on cold days just like a regular gas engine.

General Motors and Goodyear conspired to destroy passenger travel by train and it worked! Methane is a byproduct of petroleum extraction as it's also a byproduct of animal fecal matter. Of the two forms of fuel which one is going to make a corporation long term money. Solar panels on a house can produce electricity for 25 to 30 years thus, basically a one time in a generation purchase. The consumer is winning anytime a nearly free fuel source is available. Live stock farms would greatly benefit from having their machinery running on animal waste.

This is complete nonsense. Installing a methane capture system on a farm would cost millions of dollars. Should we talk about the regulations and inspections regarding a compressed natural gas plant? How much training would a farmer need to do to become methane-licensed? The era of green energy grants is coming to an end. If it can't stand on its own, subsidies wouldn't help.
