I shave with a single blade straight razor, and one of my favorite hobbies is leather-crafting. The more "convenient" way to do things rarely feels the best, nor is it t he most satisfying. Yep. People are attracted to what they don't know. The grass is always greener on the other side. That said, vinyl is often in practice superior due to better mastering, even though theoretically CDs and hi res digital are capable of better sound across the board.

@@EssenceofPureFlavor As someone who grew up with all the inconveniences of vinyl, special cartridges, speed controls, cleaning handling etc, I can tell you that your analysis is completely erroneous. When CDs came out, and became affordable, I barely touched my records again. Within a few years, I completely abandoned them because the CD was *so much easier to use.* I fully understand the CD technology and enough about digital files to say I can make an informed decision. As you age, the "purity" of sound (as your name indicates) is automatically muffled because of hearing loss. The highs go first and the rest follows over time. In my opinion, your analysis is based on logic and not actual life experience.

Vinyl can be better than compressed audio like MP3 (cassette tapes can even do that) but the original CD format where only 74 minutes would fit on a 650mb CD is very high resolution audio. Especially if it wasn't recorded and/or stored analog the idea that vinyl is superior to digital is just laughable. It only introduces more room for error and imperfections when you manufacture something analog. Though if the original recording was recorded analog, archived analog and was directly transferred to vinyl with very narrow tolerances, analog theoretically can achieve a higher perfection of reproduction because digital can never be fully analog. However the possible introduction of production faults and the very high resolution of (some) digital formats makes it still unlikely for vinyl to sound any better to the human ear.

I grew up in the vinyl era as well. And I appreciate all the positives of vinyl. But I've already had that experience. And this video highlights one of the key negatives. So, although I have a rather large vinyl collection, I don't even currently have a turntable. I look at the shelf of vinyl across the room, and then find the same music a streaming service. Even much of the really obscure stuff. I will probably get a turntable again. But it's not at the top of my list.

Weirdly enough, I kind of like the soft pops and clicks. It's audible reminder of the physicality of the record. There's something comfortingly organic and grounding about the crackling sound. Digital sound is, on the other hand, perfectly sterile and ageless. The imperfections on a record give the sound a completely new character and tell a story about where the record has been. There's a sense of permanence to the vinyl record. It doesn't depend on a server farm and an internet connection to produce its sound. The sound is actually physically molded on a surface and present in the room, and mostly keeps its shape its entire life, for generations. While codecs and compression algorithms come and go over decades, the record stays the same. And as it sits on a shelf, time slowly etches itself into the grooves for the listener to hear the next time they put it on the turn table.

@@lolwutjoe Cavitation can also occur in the blades of a pump if the system isn't well designed (normally a too low input pressure on the pump). Those microbubbles exploding basically "eat" the steel of the blades, there are some pretty explanatory images on Google. It is also bad for submarines since if the propeller start to cavitate, it becomes noisier and thus make the submarine easier to spot. And it also create other bad things that I don't have in mind right now.

I personally like several things about the vinyl experience. The first is the fact that, when you go to all the trouble to clean them, tweak the playback hardware, and go through the ritual of cuing up the record, etc., you feel like you're really **earned** the listening experience. Then there's the media itself. The sense of ownership of the music in your hand is irreplaceable, unlike any other media. In fact, if you look closely, you can actually see the very waves of sound imprinted in the grooves. Kind of mind blowing.

Do you know that the term *album* is a carryover from about 1912? Records of the time could play no more than 4 minutes of music per side (one sided only) and needed multiple discs to complete a long passage. The records came in an *album.*

I very much prefer the greater dynamic range, the quietness, and the noise free playback of the digital format. If anyone have complaints about the mix of digital, thats is something to talk to the artist about. Any digital music properly recorded and mixed can be made to sound as flattering (or more so) than vinyl.

There's great budget audiophile options these days though, just don't follow the herd, not even on budget audio. Ortofon, Project? Don't even go there. Marantz? Absolutely not. But also on the other side of the spectrum, McIntosh? B&W? Oh please. If you want to have a lot of fun with audio these days, keep an eye on small bookshelf speakers, there's a few absolute gems way under 1000 euros brand new. Also Schiit Audio is conquering the market. The shit they do is amazing.

Obviously it isn't about price... who likes to spend money? Convenience definitely not. But saying it isn't about quality? Don't get me wrong CD quality digital files are no doubt going to be more DETAILED than a clean record played on a quality system, but the real life sound of records cannot be matched. It's flaw creates a distortion that makes everything sound real, and in the process of that distortion you lose a *little* bit of detail. I'm talking the tiniest bit of detail. You also gain that warmth you get from vinyl's flaw and some hate it some love it. I personally love it. If you don't, no shame in that.

_"People who own record collections are idiots..."_ I was there when the CD was introduced. At the time vinyl and compact cassette were the dominant formats. Every home had at least one turntable. When people heard the CD, it was like a miracle. Near zero noise, incredible dynamic range, beyond human hearing frequency response. It only took a few years for most record stores to ditch vinyl completely and enjoy year over year sales increases for 12 straight years. I remember seeing crates a plenty of vinyl at every thrift store I walked into, they were almost giving it away. Now, vinyl is a life style, fashion accessory. A CD player from a thrift store still sounds better. The good news, is that used CDs are almost free. If we could only stop the loudness wars that have ruined almost all music released in the last decade.

I completely agree with you. In my country all record plants machines were sold and stopped making records in the middle of the 90s because of the CD format and all its advantages. Unfortunately, the loudness wars have ruined the format, so I had to start buying records just because of the dynamic range. I hope one day there will be a law for record companies and studios to respect the dynamic range in music and of course, our ears. A CD with full dynamic range sounds a lot better than a record made nowadays.

I can tell you one love, even if subconsciously, many have with vinyl. The waveform we hear in our ears is ACTUALLY represented physically right there on the surface. It is the ONLY medium humans have to playback recorded audio without electricity if needed. That is how it all started. If everything hits the fan, we still have these to jam to, which is one of the reasons I built my own record recorder (lathe), and yes it does record in true stereo (left & right) @ 90* to each channel and 45* to the plane. Love your video and your love of analog.

Having 40 years of high end audiophile experience, I love this guy's enthusiasm and the nice comparison he gives. But his conclusions should not be taken as fact based on just this one series of tests. It's best to survey the views of many sources and then let your own experience be the deciding factor. In this review, the vacuum system was not given a really fair chance. Many of us still regard it as the best system if it is used correctly. The ticks heard on the vacuum cleaned disc may be the result of static, not scratches from the brush. When using a vacuum, it's easy to generate static. More than one rotation in a dry room can cause it to form on a disc. The jury is still out on the ultrasonic systems and the potential damage that they can cause. Agreed. There are varying techniques and types of cleaning solutions used with vacuum based record cleaning systems that result in a wide range of effectiveness. I would not have expected good results from the technique and solution shown in this video. I use an Okki Nokki machine with L’Art du Son cleaning fluid, applied liberally to the entire record surface with a goat hair brush and allowed to remain on the surface for 1-2 minutes before vacuuming - for not more than 2 rotations. This has produced excellent results.

that machine was garbage, and the cleaning fluid was leaving a streaky mist on the vinyl. i use a project vc-s which i paid £130 for, and L’Art du Son for cleaning fluid it is painless and perfect to use.

How to remove static? I live in a very dry area and records build up immense static just by playing on the TT. Definitely producing pops and crackles.

Good stuff! Thanks for the video. I recently got into vinyl, and have been perusing the $1 bins too. Cleaning definitely helps a lot. The "Spin Clean" which is indeed near the same price point as the Vinyl Style has very different brushes than VS, so it might be worth testing too. They're more like fake velvet scrubby pads than brushes... I should think that this might work better, or at least differently. It's also made in the USA, by a family-owned business, which is nice these days. P.S. I'm also an LX-mini household, so fun to see that in your shot. FWIW, I had GREAT results with USB isolator (from HiFimeDIY) while hooking the miniDSP up to my raspberry pi. Might be a video in there somewhere for you ;-)

1:40 digital has the potential to have a much greater dynamic range than vinyl can, but due to the loudness war digital files often have a much lower dynamic range than they should.

The loudness war is the result of engineers and mastering. The format has nothing to do with that. Loud music exists because engineers master music loudly. Not every digital track is loud. If people actually purchased first pressings of music recorded in the 80's on CD, they'll know that the music is much quieter and softer than the stuff that came out in the late 90's or the remastered counterparts done in the 2000's. Analog deteriorates over time, digital does not. CD's made in the 80's are the best examples of how well digital sounds over the vinyl counterpart. Those CD's don't even come close to being as loud as today's recordings.

If you wanna see how "gentle" cavitation is, chuck a piece of tinfoil in an ultrasonic cleaner and you might rethink putting your vinyl in it ever again. It's the principle by which depth charges work, the reason submarines have to be slow as hell to be stealthy and the reason early steam ship propellers got ripped apart by their own speed. It's loud, it's violent and it's potentially devastating.

If only record labels would actually use the dynamic range. When I am round friends and they have modern pop music on the one thing I notice is that when the song finishes it is like there is pressure off of my ears, it's as if they can finally relax. Mostly why I have stopped listening to modern(ish) pop music and stick with my movie and game soundtracks (on vinyl of course hehe)

Good Dynamic range also requires engaging music to make use of it. That is why a lot of modern music compress the dynamic range as much as possible to fake the engagement. Making things more loud = more engaging. And it is not just about loudness but what style of music you have. Music with lots of heavy beats throughout the entire song and there is little room for other stuff. Classical pieces and Jazz often have quiet sections and longer builds ups. This is where having wide dynamic range is good. For Dance music? Not so much.

I have a turntable, but I have not used it in a long time because all the steps it takes to get started with playing just a single album on one (Cleaning and Shit). Dynamic Range on old CDs far surpasses vinyl records in every way, so why bother.

My favorite cleaning solution for records with emotional songs are my tears. I literally cried on side 2 of the album 17 by Chicago while listening to You're the Inspiration. I am such an asshole who has accomplished nothing in life.

It works pretty well, but you can only do one side at a time and it takes overnight to dry, and if you do more than one, you have records laying all over the place.

iv tried glue... its pretty ord.. also the surface tension of glue causes the same problem described, it simply cant get down in there well enough. It also is very hard to get it off in one without leaving ANY bits behind. slow messy and not that good. get a vinyl vac attatchment for your vax or better yet make one. wet clean and vac dry in 3 mins.

I really enjoyed this video. I remember the joy that I experienced when i got my first CD and didn’t need to “clean” my records. Handling vinyl really killed my enjoyment. Watching Quinn put his hand carefully into the plastic sleeve and take the record out by only holding the edge of the vinyl and the label in the middle brought back a flood of frustrating memories.
