Step by step, demonstrating on how to build a box for mouse or rat traps that absolutely traps rats and mice in the most effective and least expensive way.

For mice, Voles, and rats inside an out-building, I've found that black oil sunflower seeds have broad appeal and lure the most crafty mice:
Centers like Tractor Supply sell a 40# bag of sunflower seeds for $22.99
I use Titebond II wood glue on all my traps: amzn.to/34a060n
I use DeWalt bar clamps for all of my traps and beekeeping equipment:
Find them at your favorite home center like Home Depot.
I don't paint or finish any of my mouse/rat trap boxes, I leave them natural as I think they find that most appealing.
Here is my original rat/mouse trap video: • The BEST Rat and Mouse...

There is another "high-end" rat/mouse trap system on the market and I'm in the process of reviewing that system and will be posting another pest control video later this week. Thank you for your patience.

After watching many different types and built some without success this got my interest. In the past i had used the Victor style with success but it was a single trap no enclosure. This method makes sense with enclosing and multiple and all close up. Very smart as that takes care of multiple issues: 1/ rodents tend to go toward dark, enclose space 2/ close up so no other animals can get in or be seen by a person 3/ multiple traps in a box so 100% success is guarantee I am going to build this style. Thank you for sharing!!!!

Thank you Mr Dunn, I made two of your four trap boxes to solve the rat problem in my outbuildings. I caught four, but there were some which were cautious, so I changed strategy. I baited the boxes with the traps unset, only putting bait in the centre of the box to draw the rats over the traps, I also scattered a few sunflower seeds around the area of the boxes to create a "safe" feeding zone for them. After a week or so, the rats were regularly eating the bait in the boxes, then I set the traps and caught another three in one night. There is now no sign of rats. A very effective system. Thanks for taking the time to share, It's much appreciated.

@@FrederickDunn Hello Fred, reply appreciated. I set up cameras and noticed the smarter rats were eating the bait at the ends of the boxes but not going in, hence putting the vast majority of the bait in the centre of the boxes. After a few days with the traps not set they were going straight in and staying in for some time, they were eating lots of bait and obviously felt comfortable in there. @Frederick Dunn So I did end up making this and it was a fun project. I was pretty happy with the design, however it has been ineffective for me. In one week, one black Tomcat reusable rat trap caught 3 rats: the box of certain death: zero. I have tried using various bait too (obviously including the bait the Tomcat is catching them with). Pretty bummed it doesn't seem to work for whatever reason. Rats in my area seem to have just about zero interest in the black oil sunflower seeds. They do though seem to like apple and I have a product I purchased online made from apple that is very aromatic. They really like that one however, not in the box of certain death. Although it turned out to be ineffective, it was still a fun project and thank you for putting up this video.

Make sure you are using the metal made2catch traps (rat sized) and turn the traps so the trigger plates face each other, don't have the trigger plate facing the entrance, we want that rat inside when it goes off and hopefully more than one trap at a time. Configure them as shown in the end of this video with the kill bar towards the entrance when set and the trigger plate towerds the center of the box. Rats are a huge challenge! I wish you luck! Let me know what happens.
@billsharp9645
@billsharp9645 3 жыл бұрын
@@FrederickDunn Thanks for your reply. I'm using the Victor rat traps with the wooden base and plastic trigger tray. I set then just as you did in your video - 4 traps set with the trigger plates facing each other on the inside so the rat has to go over the kill bar to get to the bait. It was able to sit on the kill bar and eat the bait. The one thing I discovered tonight is that I made the side walls high enough for the kill bar to swing over but not the bar that holds it down. So, I added some spacers to raise the lid high enough for the retention bar to swing over as well. I don't know if that was the problem but hopefully I'll find out tonight. Thanks again for posting this and for your response. They are smart little rascals.

We very rarely get mice in the house, and almost always in the basement. We have very good luck with a five gallon bucket that has several inches of water in the bottom. They go in because it's the only source of water, and can't get out because the sides are so slick and tall. It's not as instant as your set up, but the mice go hypothermic pretty quick, and it's much more cost effective for just one or two mice every few years. But it wouldn't be worth snot outdoors. I hate to kill any critters, but an infestation is not an option.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 3 жыл бұрын
Mice swim for a very long time. I've never been a fan of the drowning systems for that reason. A rat can swim for over a half an hour. Not a judgement towards you, but drowning is slow indeed. Then you've got contaminated water to also contend with.
@adde9506
@adde9506 3 жыл бұрын
@@FrederickDunn If we had mice in the house even once a year, I would definitely be in for something more expensive/instantaneous. And while I agree it's much slower than a spring trap, it's not at all like starving to death or being maimed or poisoned. If they get out, they're fine, and if they don't, at least it was minutes and not days. They are definitely crappy minutes, no argument there. Why would the water be contaminated? We don't do anything to it or the mice.

Glue traps are clearly inhumane. Humans categorise mice as 'pests' but they are also warm blooded mammals with a nervous system and pain responses very similar to ours. If you are going to kill them, be a humane human and do it quickly! Glue traps should never have been manufactured - this is an animal cruelty issue.

Love your bee videos but I found this video hard to watch. Mice are beautiful, warm blooded mammals as are rats - but humans have demonised them as 'pests' so it's open season on them. Your trap appears to kill them quickly, which is at least an improvement on those barbaric 'glue traps', which should not be legal IMO. I know I'll get stick for this comment, but I don't care. I love animals and if I had a rat or mouse problem, I would lock away food sources and take other steps to keep them out, not kill them. There are also 'humane traps' whereby you can catch and release miles away - but that requires much more work of course! Why can't people respect animals and their right to share the world with us?

I respect your position on this. I've done many live catch videos of course. Relocating rats and mice is illegal where I reside. I also agree that keeping them out in the first place is a great step. If you have witnessed rats chewing holes in buildings overnight, you also know that's not always possible to prevent their entry. I am no dictator as always, I share what I do and how. As I mention in this video, live traps are only good if people are willing to tend them frequently, which almost never happens. Leaving an animal to starve in a Havahart trap is a sad way to go. Thanks for sharing your thonghts and convictions. I always encourage discussion.

@@FrederickDunn I appreciate your reasoned and informative response, thank you. I recognise it's not a simple problem to solve, and as a fan of your channel I don't think you're insensitive to it. I just wish people as a whole would have more empathy about the way their everyday choices affect wildlife. In 2020, we face umpteen natural disasters as a result of 100 years of disrespecting nature (we were warned about global warming and the extinction crisis 50 years ago, but continued to selfishly run roughshod over the natural world). The small choices we make each day can spell disaster for countless life forms that have no voice. I wonder how many lactating females are killed in traps like that, meaning their infants suffer terrible, slow deaths from starvation. "It's only a mouse" people will say - but suffering is suffering. And who are we to put value on its life? What we do to other animals and wildlife generally, we ultimately do to ourselves. Sorry to get heavy on a mousetrap video, but I have to say what I see. Thanks again for allowing an open forum here, you are a good man. Stay safe and well.

Wait till a rat does a couple thousand dollars damage to a couple vehicles you have in your garage then you will think different.

I know a trap that gets mice every time but it's definitely not humane all you need is a bucket of water and a plank of wood and you will catch more mice then you can count

May I recommend Shawn Woods if you want to see rodents getting snapped. This video is just for those who are wanting to make a trap box that traps mice. If I showed a mouse getting the snap, they would demonitize me.
