The OLD MAN here, just wanted to say your using the right hammer. A lot of people think a regular hammer works but it has less weight and striking surface. Saw that cracked flywheel, over torquing the flywheel nut will also split an aluminium flywheel always check the torque specifications. No need to use nickel anti seize on the crankshaft taper since it affects torque specifications given and even though you think it will allow easier removal it will also create over torquing and split the flywheel.

Thanks for showing me this neat trick, I enjoyed your video! Removing flywheels was challenging so I made makeshift pulling tools out of long screws, some bolts and bed rail parts (used some cutters and drilling in the process of making the “tool” but your method is much faster!) the big screw in the center is to be turned by a wrench to apply pulling effort while outer screws fit into surrounding holes of the flywheel (I’m bad at explaining things). I turn trash mowers into treasure mowers because half my equipment I got was free, fresh from the curb! Keep up the good work! I like doing repairs on small engine equipment and collecting parts for cannibalization into replacement machines (I consider safe operation so no corners are cut, safety 1st!). You, my friend are fast and efficient which is a really big help, thank you!

I tried the hammer method on a stubborn tecumseh flywheel, never did it again. Almost ruined the threads on the crankshaft. I now have several different pullers, even some for pulley's and blade adapters. Best to have the right tool for the job.
@EliminatorPerformance4 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely, as mentioned this is just one of the ways you can remove them and usually this is the quickest way for us when stripping down an engine.
@waynestefinashen2394 жыл бұрын
Norge696 you must have had the nut slightly above the crankshaft to strip the threads. In this EP video they appear to hit it pretty hard a few times to remove it since the key was sheared and the shaft and nut appear to not have suffered any catastrophic destruction. The most critical thing about using the hammer method is to ensure the nut is level with the crankshaft and you strike flush not on an angle.

I have an old 1960s David Bradley/Sears & Roebuck chainsaw that I’m trying to get the flywheel off of since the ignition coil and points are located underneath the flywheel. Unfortunately the body/shroud of the chainsaw is in the way of being able to pry up on the flywheel and I don’t see any way to remove the shroud. Check the flywheel key, reset the air gap between flywheel and coil. While the flywheel is off, check the points and condenser. Check the pushrod between crankshaft and point set. Check the carb, check the fuel filter for water or contamination. As long as it has correct spark, correct air to fuel ratio, it should run correctly.

@bobgreene28923 жыл бұрын
To remove a flywheel, do you recommend the use of a "knock-off hub"? This slender, metal plug is threaded from inside to follow upper crankshaft threads, above the flywheel. The procedure for flywheel removal (which I have seen) is to remove the cup nut and cup, then thread the hub all the way down the upper crankshaft to the upper crankshaft bearing housing, then back off the hub about one full revolution. At this point, the hub's top portion will protrude above the crankshaft. Now, by striking the hub with a mallet, the knock-off hub transfers force to the crankshaft, but more softly, as it rotates slightly with the hammer blow. Your video is good content, and addresses a problem all of us eventually will meet with older mowers. We thumbed UP and subscribed. No douibt, you have noticed many viewers agree-- your thumbs UP/DOWN ratio is 310/6.

@bobgreene28922 жыл бұрын
@@olukayodeokunowo4631 Do you mean a "flywheel puller/extractor"? Those are impact-free, and unlikely to cause a problem. However, they have a variety of attachment mechanisms, and not all will fit the situation.

its funny how you show us how to do it the hard way first. an air chisel is the easiest way to get those to pop off without damaging anything and air chisels are so cheap. last one i bought was $15 brand new from princess auto. i would never use a hammer unless i had no other option. if you damage the crank it usually becomes cheaper to just replace the engine.
