Check it Out!
Today we'll be discussing some various tools used to repair damaged spark plug threads.
1st off, I use a basic thread chaser to clean up the the spark plug threads on an aluminum cylinder head.
Next, I use what's known as a back-tap spark plug thread chaser. This goes into the cylinder, past the damaged threads, then expands, allowing you to chase the threads from the inside out.
Then, if the threads are too badly damaged, and a thread chaser cannot be used, I show you a basic heli-coil kit.
This is an insert, that replaces the factory spark plug threads in your cylinder head.

After an unforgettable, heart stopping moment when I crossthreaded a plug two decades ago, I eventually bought this tool to have on hand if I ever encounter difficulty. Cleaning up threads is always better if you start from the bottom, to be sure you're at the right angle. Since then, I've been so paranoid I've never had need for plug thread repair.

Just wanted to add another fix for this issue, especially for spark plugs with stubbier threaded sections like he showed, is to remove the washer at the end of the plug. This allows the plug to screw in at least one full turn deeper into the cylinder head, potentially allowing it to grab undamaged threads further back. It's worked for me so far. One caveat is that this washer is there for a reason. In my case, it hasn't affected performance on my Briggs and Stratton engine mower. I had to use a hack saw and cutting pliers to remove it, but a Dremel-type tool could also work.

This is exactly what I needed to fix the cross. Threaded spark plug hole on my 2004 Buick Rainier and I can probably almost guarantee that it'll work because it's due shows. He did a good job with it and I really do appreciate it

I don’t have to think about giving a thumbs up, dude. It’s a no brainer for content this great! 👍 I know exactly where the idea came from for that back tap thread chaser. Having used taps by hand with their associated T-handles I immediately recognized that compression design from the T-handles. Also seen them as collets on Dremel and other tools for chucking bits. Brilliant use of the concept and a brilliant tool. So glad to know something like that exists. Thanks 🙏!

So when you are dealing with aluminum heads you will want to use a cutting lubricant thats aluminum friendly. There's several we use in the machine shops that are available, However just everyday WD-40 works well on aluminum. If you're working on a STEEL head, you'll want to use a cutting oil for steel. I really like Tap Magic. And its available in a small 4 oz can. And to help avoid debri getting into the engine on aluminum heads. Rotate the piston into the top dead center position. The move it back slightly into the cylinder to make sure you do not hit it with the thread chaser. If you can,, remove the muffler also. Then do the work, Then before you do anything else use some compressed air and a blow nosel try try and blow out any of those small chip. Typically they take the easiest path and go out threw the exhaust. If you're working on a steel head, then a small magnet on a collapsible rod (they sell these at the parts store) Place that down into your newly cut hole and add a small amount of air around into the cylinder. The magnet will attract the metal chip. And be careful when removing it to not knock them off. I do these a few times till I'm sure I've got everything out of the cylinder I can. Just so advice from a machinist thats done a few of these jobs in the past 40 yrd. 😉

Another great video! I was thinking on that first tool before you said it that a dab of grease on the bottom might keep shavings from entering the combustion chamber if the heads still on. It worked pretty good when I punched then tapped threads into an oil pan for a supercharger install on an old car.

Yes the grease will be sticky enough and should keep the debris from going in, but I just wanted to make a point about how much better the other tool is during the comparison. Thanks for watching!

Good video except that the tool use was demonstrated using no grease and applying 'sticky grease' is best. Grease was mentioned, but late in the video. Also, deep socket over the end of the tool for final extraction works best. Turn knurled tip of the tool clockwise to tighten and expand the threads of the tool tip, then turn counter-clockwise by hand to thread the tool into the undamaged threads. When damaged threads are reached you will likely need a wrench to further turn the tool to re-cut the damaged threads, as turning by hand will be too hard.

Hi. Just came across your video. Im having trouble with the spark plug on a Troy-Bilt storm 2410 and trying to see what i can do to fix this. Thinking when someone tried replacing the spark plug they cross threaded it-when i went to replace it the porcelain was cracked and im now having trouble getting the new plug in? Not sure if i was given the wrong plug at the store but i need to look into it first? Wondering how i would now what size of this tool i would need if i had to repair threads? Any way you could help with that? Just trying to fix a snow blower is all. Thank you if you can! Have a good night

Nice video can you tell me what are the size of the new threads (outside) of the helicoil please on the oem kit? My motorcycle head has been drilled and retaped but when i removed the spark plug the helicoil came with the plug. I'm looking for a new helicoil but can't seem to find one, that is M14 1.25 inside and M16 1.5 outside. Cant's seem to find a back-up for M16 1.5 either... :( Thanks
