Elin. I am a recent owner of a TR6 that had been professionally restored a few years in the past. Not having worked on a Triumph myself, I have been trying to educate myself by reading forums and watching KZbin videos. I came across your channel several months ago and I am writing to tell you that of all the videos I have watched, yours is the most informative and most enjoyable. Unlike many other channels, you read and educate yourself before diving into a project so that you can show and tell us the right way to do something and warn us of possible pitfalls. And when you run into a problem, you come up with creative solutions such as making your own tool or modifying a procedure to fit the situation. I may or may not use what I learn from your channel but I feel better able to understand the working of my own car. Thank you.

That is one of the main purposes of my videos. To show people how to do things. Well, I don't know some of them myself so I analyze and learn together with the viewers and sometimes make mistakes of course, but I analyze and learn from them as well and that helps people understand better. So I am thankful my videos serve their purpose.

Elian. Bonjour , I confirm. Overdrive has always been for me a mastery box, it starts to get clearer now. Many thanks. Maurice

Love your videos. When you have minor problems I learn more than I would if every thing worked perfectly the first time. Thank you!!

My goodness I think it would be easier rebuilding the space shuttle than this bloody overdrive!!! What a ton of work! You are a VERY patient man Elin.
@RustyBeauties7 жыл бұрын
I agree. It is overengineered. It could have been much simpler to design a 5-speed transmission and I do not understand why the engineers came up with an overdrive unit.... A space shuttle is my next project. I can't find one that is rusty enough for me.

Great work Elin. You might want to look out for some silicon grease for the o-ring. It is called plumbers grease at hardware stores and also is available from Scuba shops where it is used to lubricate the o-rings on cameras etc. It feels a lot more slippery than regular grease.

Elin, great information, a logical approach, and unlike a lot of videos you don't waffle on, I have a problem with my overdrive engauging of its own accord and staying that way until the unit cools down, I have not connected the solenoid so it's not an electrical problem, I'm watching your videos just in case it might give me a clue ?

Folks we have a brand new expert on the servicing of these overdrive units, congratulations Eiin! Great job!

Elin, you are the man! Another great video series. I decided not to do anything with my overdrive for the restoration of my TR3 and hoping that I won't need to. The switch was blown when I got the car so I'm hoping that's the only issue. If I do need to dive in and rebuild it, I'll have this video series to guide me. Thanks again for another job well done.

Yeah, it is too much work taking it apart just to check if it is OK. But at the very least I would hook up a motor to the transmission and check for noises, leaks, preferably pressure if you have a gauge and if the O/D engages and disengages normally. That is what I am going to do with the D-type I got for my GT6

Well done and well figured out. That series is right up there with the one you did on cam timing. Keep going.

Thanks, Keith. I keep going. I am one step closer to the GT6 now. Every day I pass next to her like 1000 times and I can't keep my smile every time I see her. The more I look at her the more I adore her! She is the best project I have and I work really hard to get everything out of my way so I can put my hands on her!

You have got to love Brittish engineering. I am surprised that you didn't have to say some ancient Druid encantation while standing on one foot, patting your head and rubbing your stomach while facing in the direction of Stone Henge in order to get the damn thing to work properly. Hats off to you with your drive and determination in getting that OD to function. I'm sure the ghost of John Lucas the prince of darkness is spinning in his grave. Now you should treat yourself to a pint of warm beer from a refrigerator with Lucas wiring to celebrate! If I ever get an OD for my TR6 I'm going to refer to your video series on the subject if it needs to be rebuilt. Either that or I'll just ship it up to you in Toronto because you seem to enjoy this type of masochism. All kidding aside, great job Elin. When I replace the other side of the floor in my TR6 after having made all my mistakes on the first side maybe I'll make a video in the Yakov style so you can refer to it when you go to replace the floor in your 1974 TR6. Cheers to you my friend.

I did all that (the encantation stuff) off camera, hence the increased pressure LOL Yeah, it was like a puzzle to me. I just had to get it done. And that is why I started the series, I couldn't just give up in the middle of part 6 let's say :) Well, to be honest, I was waiting for the hard part to come and now that it is completed I think the hard part is still ahead - to install it in the car. I didn't see anything soooo complicated. Yes, it is overengineered thing, but not so hard to understand as many people believe. Yeah, if you get an overdrive ship it to me I liked this kind of entertainment. Or ship me to your place :) I love traveling. And I can see on the spot your floor replacing work. And seriously, a video will be really useful. I haven't found a decent one yet!

I live on Cape Cod and we see a lot of Canadian plates in the summer. Usually, people driving around at 30 mph (when the speed limit is 40 mph) pointing at stuff and getting in my way. I think maybe because their speedometers are in kmph. Anyway, you are always welcome my friend. BTW, if you know of anyone who is looking for a set of original Jaguar XKE 72 spoke wire wheels 15X5. I bought a set of 5 thinking that they would fit my TR6, but the hub size is too big. They are nice wheels that just need to be re-chromed or stripped and painted or powder coated. If you ever want to come down, I think you can send a private email through KZbin but I'm not sure as I have never tried. As I said, You are always welcome my friend.

the overdrive will not engage when the oil level in the box drops, so first thing to check is the box oil level, my own A type gearbox has a slight oil leak between the overdrive unit gasket to gearbox, the first time it stopped working I topped the oil level up with less than half a litre....so not a huge loss before the OD stopped working.....I just make sure the gearbox is full until dripping out the fill plug on the side of the gearbox, I'll fix the leak one day but its been like that for ten years and I just check the oil level at the beginning of the summer and put a little bit in there as required to maintain a full level.

Hey Elin, when you are testing your OD, what are you energizing the solenoid with? Just a car battery grounded to the transmission and touching the solenoid wire to the positive post on the battery?
