That's a good way to put it. The playing is a bit schizophrenic. Still, I give Fisk points both for playing this on the ragged edge of his control and for doing something different with it. That's thumbs up from me, whatever the flaws here. BTW, I wish I could play this "badly", but that's another issue!

I disagree with the many detractors of Fisk. Eliot Fisk is a guitarist capable of wonderful interpretations which sometimes go beyond his (quite remarkable) technique. He is a daring interpreter endowed with great musical sensitivity. He takes lots of risks in giving his personal touch; sometimes he overdoes it and indeed he offered some less-than-exciting performances (possibly more than other guitarists at his level); but if we wanted completely flawless executions we would have all music performed by computers. Fisk's take on Sevilla is audacious, with all its rasgueados, and captures the spirit of the piece better than many other interpretations. Technically it isn't perfect, but the sound is clean where it needs to be; the pace is right and the execution has a lot of energy. Overall I enjoyed it very much.

Alle Fisklovers speak about the risks he dares tot take. A Risk implies an open end. In the case of mr. Fisk I rather speak about predictions. You know on forehand when it is gonna be messy and sloppy: when speed is in the game. From that point of view mr Fisks playing is boring/predictable. From an emotional perspective I feel he is in the essence a great musician.

EF: allways praised for his uncomparable craftman-musicianship and above all the fact that he takes risks. Besides the question why one would speak of risks, the main point is that a risk in this context means that it could go wrong ( missed notes for instance). In the case of EF I would like to speak of a prediction and not risks. Why? Because it is predictable that EF will play sloppy at movements that are beyond his technical abillities. From that point of view I feel secure knowing that (only in fast pasages) the mistakes are there, not one, but many. I find that rather boring and far away from the ádventouros' risks where EF is praised for.

+Brian Keenan I saw David Russell play to a sold house in London last year, the Romeros several times, Parkening, Vidovic, LAGQ and the members of that group in solo concerts - all sold out. But hey, don't let facts get in the way of your story. There isn't a guitar school around that would tolerate that kind of performance. He gets away with it because Segovia patted his cheek once and said he was good. He's far from boring though; gotta give him that. The pieces he's goes after are never dull.

With almost 100% accuracy the commenters who write positive things have posted their own videos. And the little trolls who post negative shitty comments have ZERO evidence of their own playing. Tells you all you need to know about KZbin comment sections.
@jakeamberson66758 жыл бұрын
You need a thicker skin. By your logic, only those who have performed in public could critique a concert, meaning 95% or more in attendance wouldn't be allowed to have an opinion. Or those who post comments on KZbin have to have done the exact same thing before saying other than praiseworthy. I've never blown up a rocket before but can still say with certainty that last week's SpaceX explosion was an absolute catastrophe. Or does that just make me a troll? Seriously dude, grow up or grow home.

There is really tremendous beauty here and a rawhide sound which mixes some of the most incredible and sweetest sounds with a right hand, after which a 1950 movie "The Gian Claw" (about a giant flying turkey buzzard whose beak and pecking power were similar to Eliot's right hand) was named. Very promordial and energetic reading: one must imagine this live which must have blown away the audience. Eliot Fisk is a one-and-only unique artist and musical genius; and there will not be another. I'd rather listen to this than any note-perfect rendition (they seem boring). Of his generation, Eliot was only matched by Kazuito Yamashita who, with even more herculean technique, went beyond the fringe. and stretched the guitar even further. These players are the last titans of the guitar: Eliot is very much a Liszt of the guitar, and perhaps there is sometimes a disconnect between how passionately he feels the music and what he's actually producing: I really don't think he hears himself, but rather just plays with full fury and translates that onto the strings...which don't hold up at times.

Brian Cullen No doubt he does miss some notes here are there, although he hits the ones you really need to. This is such an abusrd display of passion and individualism. Take John Williams version (youtube it), its great and i love it, but I find Eliots style to be alot more thrilling. I feel on the edge of my seat when i here him play. And seriously, after watching him for awhile, NOBODY plays like him, and never heard as many colors out of a classical guitar. I love it
@soundknight9 жыл бұрын
Lucas Patti yes he is very colourful, if he could some how blend that with a more consistent technique (not to the point of being a robot but just to making it a little more palatable timbre). I get the fact that he is exciting and I find that much and the colours enjoyable.

+Brian Cullen +Lucas Patti - I first saw Fisk in 1976 and he was incredible. I think he was about 20 at the time. I saw him 4 more times after that and was also amazed. I am surprised at some of the later videos of him on the tube here. Some passages seem so rushed and sometime sloppy. The concerts I saw were not like that. It's almost as if he's deteriorating, sadly. I studied with one of his teachers (Bill Viola) in Philadelphia in the mid 70's and he told me Fisk was incredible when he was 13. He would memorize and play entire Bach suites flawlessly within just a few days of the music being given to him.
@damray17 жыл бұрын
saw him as a teen in the early '70s, in Oscar Ghiglia's master classes in Aspen. An amazing group that included Sharon Isben, David Russel, David Tannenbaum. Fisk was the undisputed prince of that group of young phenom students. He was powerful, musical, flawless, his tone was breathtaking...he still had something to prove. I frankly haven't seen video of Fisk that touches those performances I saw at Aspen
