Has your therapist given you any lifehacks as to how to deal with depression on a daily basis, what practical things you can do? Not just the 'think positive" or 'be kind to yourself' stuff, but, I don't know, take a drink of water, do ten pushups, etc.? :) I am 100% sure I have been suffering from depression almost my entire life, even though I've never been diagnosed and treated properly :( Hence, I'm not on any meds, and would really appreciate some practical advice from whoever knows what they are talking about.

I was there the weekend she was there and went missing. I was walking back to the hotel from the Staples center and had that "hairs on the back of my neck" creeped-out feeling. I live in the city of Seattle, I don't get creeped out easily. There was a guy walking a ways behind me and it was completely plausible that he was simply walking in the same direction, and I told myself that REPEATEDLY as I kept walking and quickening my pace feeling more and more creeped out. By the time I turned left on the street that the Cecil was on, the guy was almost right behind me and followed me into the hotel. At this point I was absolutely internally freaking out, and I glanced at the front desk and mouthed "Help" as I veered left toward the elevators. I pressed the button, an elevator opened, and I jumped inside. The guy tried to follow me in, but someone from the desk jumped out and blocked him, screaming at him "GET OUT OF HERE, We've told you before!" So ....pretty sure I was right, and he was intentionally following me. There was no way he would have known what room I was staying in, so I got off on the "wrong floor" first and then backtracked. I didn't sleep at all that night and I was completely freaked out. I left for the airport early the next morning. Then a few weeks later Elisa was found in the water tank and turns out she was there and went missing at the same time I was there. The last footage of her is her in an elevator freaking out like someone was following her. WHELP, never stayed there again lol.

I watched the netflix show about Elisa and her death. I was intrigued because I to have a diagnosis that is similar to Elisa. I also tend to stop medication. I think this poor girl was in a manic/psychosis episode and she accidentally got herself into the water tank trying to hide from the monsters in her head. It's heartbreaking.

i find it so frustrating that american pop/media/culture glorifies mental insanity and psychosis, but cannot seem to accept that these are devastating and frightening brain disorders. the type that can make you do things like end your own life in what might be seen as "bizarre circumstances", but to the patient, they were locked in a prison only they could sense. i agree 10,000% this shouldnt have been sensationalized and gobbled up as a conspiracy theory the way it has been by entertainment media giants. and they barely even shed light or resources/assistance for people who are currently struggling! no! it just shows us if you die as a result of a terrifying mental disorder, some big sexy LA studio will get the rights and the funding and will just make documentaries about you!!! rest in peace Elisa, you did not deserve this suffering, or this tragic ending. (and i hope your parents find some sense of peace as well even thought they never will and i say that as as mother.)

@@StephanieHarlowe thank you so much. There has been a lot of cuts to services which makes it so easy to get stuck. It feels like you are being deliberately held down sometimes. I disengaged for a while and have been staying with friends as much as possible, but I've just started talking to the homeless services again. Thanks for covering all these cases so thoroughly, you always add details that I didn't know, even when I'm well read on a subject and thought there was nothing I didn't know. As a fellow history buff I'd love videos on historical subjects of any nature some day! Hope you have a great Christmas and New Year.

According to someone I know who is bipolar, this is a plausible interpretation: She was spooked by a feeling of being watched or pursued, and she was hiding from someone or some imagined entity. This kind of thing would be normal for someone experiencing such an episode. Now intellectually, she would have known no one was there, which is why she might have appeared playful and relaxed, because she's trying not to scare herself. The internal thoughts might have been something like "Come on, there's nobody there, don't be silly." But then, the elevator not moving might have made her more anxious and creeped out. As the episode intensified, she might have been searching for a hiding place. She may have collected roof detritus on her clothing because she initially hid somewhere close to the ground up there, or because she sat down on the roof, or slipped and fell while up there, there are countless possibilities for that one. If she was convinced she was actively being pursued by someone malevolent, the tank might have seemed a safe hiding place in her mental state. But here's the thing, for me. I absolutely hate it when someone's mental illness is used to explain away something that should be thoroughly investigated. When someone is found dead, it's easy and lazy to just write the person off as mentally ill and close the case. Since it's closed there should be no reason to keep the information from the public. Who did the cops interview? What about these roommates? Someone having an episode where reality is distorted might be an easy victim. Did she discover a small party on the roof? Did someone egg her on or tell her to get in the tank? Just because she had the possibility of an episode doesn't rule out the possibility of someone else's involvement. I feel like if the cops were confident in this ruling they would publish their findings, even if they felt the need to keep the names of people interviewed anonymous. Where there's smoke there's often fire and when people aren't willing to be transparent it really makes one wonder why. From what we know, the above is probably the best explanation. But if we were to discover in police interviews, say, a person had been following her or spending time with her in her room, and that person checked out and left the state right before she was reported missing, that might change the picture instantly. The mentally ill do not deserve second-rate justice, as I'm sure we'd all agree. They deserve the same consideration as everyone else. It's possible that Elisa accidentally ended her own life due to an episode. But we don't have the information to know that conclusively. And if someone did do this to Elisa, or contribute to her death by menacing or negligence, they have gotten away with it.

But the questions surrounding her death are far too vast to say definitely that this was the cause, and she is owed the same duty of care as anyone else, without prejudice.

Song Weaver I've been a therapist for 40 yrs. Your friend gave an accurate description of what a person with bipolar disorder is going through & I do think this likely is an unfortunate accident caused by her bipolar disorder. Unfortunately many people with this illness do not consistently remain taking their much needed medication, & then run into real risks. Having said that, I think you very beautifully pointed out something that happens all too often: people with a mental illness, as well as people who have fallen on hard times & become homeless, often receive 2nd class justice. It's heart breaking & wrong & the implication is that they are not as valued as others are. I think in actual fact they do end up being undervalued but I think it begins due to the cost of investigations being such that there is always a need to keep costs down. This leads to the most logical assumption becoming the conclusion without any significant investigation done to verify this. If more often than not investigations do show the most logical assumption is actually what happened, it's a short step to just automatically make those assumptions & cut corners. Thank you for saying what you did. I hope you & others continue to point out the importance of a properly thorough investigation being done for ALL people. The more we speak up about this, the better the chance the mindset of taking short cuts being changed for the better. People with mental illness or homelessness deserve as much respect as all of us, they are people just like us, & none if us are exempt from the struggles they are going through.

I'm sure someone else has already commented this, but in science ELISA stands for Enzyme-Linked Immuno-sorbent Assay and is a really common scientific test that is used in a lot of diagnostics and LAM is the protein they test for in the urine. I do ELISAs in my lab with undergrads all the time. Just a creepy coincidence that her name is spelled the same.

I’m just going to make a comment. With bipolar disorder she could have easily gotten a manic episode and because she was on anti psychotics that means she could have experienced psychosis. Who knows what convinced this girl to jump in (if that’s the case). To add, becoming manic can make you feel on top of the world and like you’re indestructible. Meaning if she was in an episode she could have thought that she was god or even a mermaid and it wouldn’t harm her. Stripping down in mania is also a very common thing. If this happened I believe the police and hotel were just covering their butts But this is very sad and I too wish I could have said/done something to help her.

@@beccahowells9409 I have bipolar disorder as well and experience the psychosis part, that’s why I can see it I guess. The main part of an episode is having a grandiose sense of view. I have noticed in other people and myself it seems to take on that we’re indestructible I can definitely see myself going for a “swim” in a water tank if it gets that bad. But that’s just me everyone goes through it differently. I’m not saying that that’s what happened I’m saying that it’s possible ya know?

@@beccahowells9409 as another person with bipolar I think it’s important to remember that there are two types of bipolar, bipolar 1 and 2. Plus everyone experiences it differently, and yeah Elisa could have been wrongly diagnosed. I’ve been rediagnosed multiple times and have learned that the diagnosis isn’t too important bc even though medical “professionals” who are certified to diagnose people like this don’t always get the diagnosis right so I think it’s very possible.

As someone who's on antidepressants, I can firmly say that (depending on the type of medication) forgetting to take/not taking your meds for just a single day can really mess you up. In the mornings I was fine, but as the day went on and my body started realizing the pills weren't in my system it had a really strong reaction; I got dizzy spells so intense that I couldn't see straight and had to lay down for the rest of the day. I feel like a lot of people underestimate how important it is to take your meds when they're prescribed, especially psychoactives, since they can effect your body and chemical levels way more than you'd think. While I'm not convinced that's all there is to the story, I can't imagine how she wouldn't have been affected by the medications that she was (or wasn't) taking.

I too have experienced some disorienting sensations when either forgetting my meds for a few days or running out a few days before I could afford to get them refilled. Mine manifested as some kind of full body phantom sensation. The best way I can describe it is a cross between the way your body feels after spending all day at a water park - lying in bed that night I would become aware that my whole body could still feel the water lapping up against every inch of my skin - and how awkward your whole body feels when you've taken roller skates off after a couple hours at a skating rink; that way your feet & body expect you to glide when you take the first step and how you become very aware of all the coordination of limbs required to walk somewhat normally and not faceplant. Just a little bit unsteady for a few minute and if you don't pay attention your body will lift your foot too high (expecting to have to overcome the weight of the skate) and at the moment the increased forward movement enabled by the rolling surface of the skate wheels *should* happen, the rubbery sole of your shoe grips the nubby carpet like it's auditioning for Shoe Sole of the Year, and if you're lucky enough to not fall right on your face, biting thru your lip and chipping your front tooth, you'll merely experience what feels like for your very soul to step right out of your body.

Zoloft withdrawal. Ugh. Worst vertigo ever, and it lasted for TWO MONTHS which shouldn't even happen according to every source on earth except my own experience. I couldn't turn my head without the entire room continuing to spin around me. I was running into walls, walking into door frames, and telling over furniture. What an awful period of time. I can't say I had any real behavioral problems as a result of it, but I did have major physical discomfort.

in regards to the security footage: I’m a clinician in acute psychiatric treatment. That footage looks like a manic episode with psychotic features. I see it every day at work. that’s not to say there’s nothing sketchy with this case but that footage looks like what they later said it was. some people can decompensate after skipping as few as 2 days of meds. If it was a full blown manic episode, we can’t try to apply our logic to her thinking process in that moment because often mania can result in illogical/psychotic thought processes. I’ve also been to places very similar to the Cecil in LA’s skid row- I can totally believe the idea that the hotel is not being completely honest in regards to what they have in place security wise. I watched the whole John Lordan series. Based on that and what I’ve seen in my work- I do believe it was a combo of mania with psychotic features and poor safety measures by the Cecil.

(I'm looking at you, Effexor!) Due to the lack of solid evidence one way or another, I'm not convinced that Elisa wasn't both in a bad way mentally, *and* victimised by someone in the hotel who took advantage of her small size and psychiatric state. The entire scenario is so improbable no matter which conclusion you draw, there will be something missing and pieces that don't fit. It's terribly frustrating.

I had always considered myself an extrovert growing up because I was always a "social butterfly" but as I've grown into adulthood, and working on trauma processing from childhood and adulthood events, I've realized that I am way more introverted than not. The antidepressant she was on was Wellbutrin. I was on that once, and just once I took my dose early and forgot the alarm I usually had to remind me, and went to bed. Alarm went off, I was working on reflexes and took a second dose. I ended up having to call an ambulance I was hallucinating so badly (the phone keypad was 'scrambled' and I had to try and remember where the right numbers were) I was seeing people that weren't there, hearing people that weren't there. I pulled my IVs out to 'prove' there was a hospital employee under my bed - and that was even when I was _aware_ what I was hearing and seeing wasn't real. If she was on other meds she suddenly stopped taking, throwing all the other meds into whack, and she started hallucinating _without_ understanding she was? Yes absolutely, having been in that position that video doesn't seem weird to me at all, it could have been me. And on the same medication she was on, and just _one_ extra accidental dose did that.

Strangely, it was Topamax which sent me over the edge. It was prescribed as a migraine preventative. Within a short while I became terribly paranoid. I didn't feel attached to this world. Would beg my husband not to go to work as it was frightening to be left on my own. Went to the grocery store and it took everything I had to not run out screaming. I would sit in a corner of a room until my husband came home. Took about a week after stopping to feel normal again. These drugs really mess with our brain chemicals.

I have bipolar disorder. I was diagnosed with it when I was 16 and have been on medication for it for 12 years now. Bipolar disorder can cause hallucinations and delusions. I've had both. Anyone can learn this with a simple Google search so I don't understand why the belief that Elisa couldn't have gone into the tank of her own free will is so pervasive. She lost touch with reality. Her decisions will make sense *only* to her. Sometimes coincidences are weird and people die tragic, needless deaths as a result of something as simple as not taking your medication. And as someone with bipolar disorder, her death is a morbid reminder for me to stay on my medication.

I feel inclined to believe Elisa was having an episode from the medication she was taking to treat her illness, but also I find it very strange that the elevator wasn't closing no matter what she was doing. It could have been a electrical malfunction that was a total coincidence, however, given Elisa didn't seem to be in the right state of mind, I feel like what was just a mechanical problem might've played into Elisa's paranoia that someone was after her and influenced her strange behavior. I've been a highrise window cleaner for 3 years. I cannot do my job unless I have access to the roof. In my experience with old and new hotels the roof hatch is always locked. The chain of command goes like this, call front desk, front desk calls security, security will unlock the roof. If security is not available building maintenance will unlock instead. In my opinion, this woman would not know that this was a water tank or there would be a hatch to climb into on top. (The hatch on top of the water tank should be locked by a separate key or combination from the roof lock). I barely notice these things and I see them every day. I don't think it was a hotel employee (front desk/housekeeping). I think it was building security (they have the keys) who I often see on the roof hiding from work taking smoke breaks or using cell phones, or building maintenance who always have the keys and take them home. If it was security they probably had this planned in there mind and scouted the water tank in advance to even know what it is and how to put a body in it. Or it was building maintenance who knew exactly where this was, had the keys to access this and the presence of mind to know blind spots to not get caught. On the other hand security who also has keys know all the blind spots and also has access to surveillance, explaining why 1min of the video is erased. I don't pretend to know her mental state but the more unstable someone like her is the more she becomes a target for a predator with knowledge of the building and keys to the roof

I live in New York and couldn’t even tell you where to get a hostel style room... and I can tell you three hotels you can rent by the hour within ten miles of here. I do agree that someone who’s having a mental episode is DEFINITELY at risk for a bad person to do something to them, but it’s already been proven the hatch was open when they found her... I think she was having a manic episode and either thought she was hiding from someone. Or, was having a manic episode that made her think she was lucky enough to find somewhere to swim. The water tank would’ve then lowered and she couldn’t get back out. As for being undressed, there are a lot of explanations. I think the hotel hadn’t kept up with any of the things they should have... I don’t think there was a working alarm, I don’t think the door was locked. I don’t think they invested in security cameras in all the places they should have had them. Idk.... Could be either reason but it was definitely down to her mental health imo. Maybe it was her first truly manic episode.

What's weird is when this was first discovered and plastered all over social media, I read an article saying the missing piece of the surveillance tape showed what looked to be her interacting with two guys that seemed to have handed her something that appeared be a small box that they assumed could have been drug related. But they (the guys) were questioned and it was nothing significant to the case and was not drug related. But as of now I can't find anything about it what-so-ever!? They claimed the guys must have taken the stairs because they passed by her either while she was standing in the elevator or outside in the hallway waiting for the elevator. So I'm not sure if this was part of this surveillance camera or one in a hallway or downstairs or even the same day. But they said they were not going to release names or video to protect their identity because they weren't suspects. It's just so odd I can no longer find anything about it. Another weird thing is that the search dogs found no scent of her on the roof and she would have walked all over the roof, so could she have been carried and placed on the wooden platform the towers were on, if she was murdered?(Even though I do believe it was an accident and it wasn't unusual for her to climb on top of roofs because she had done it many times taking pictures and hanging out, so maybe she climbed up the tower to get a better view sat down with feet dangling in the hole and accidentally fell in, but it doesn't explain the odd behavior in the video or why her camera went missing)A guy went to the hotel and filmed himself climbing the fire escape and accessing the roof and seeing 2 hatches were open still and this was after this happened. And he did this with a camera in his hand so it must not be too difficult to get up there. And a picture taken before she went missing showed a wooden step ladder against one of the water towers. If it were a murder I would suspect someone else to have been murdered by now. And no way they could have climbed that step ladder and placed her in the tank. And killers don't usually kill once and stop in most cases. Thats if Unless they are caught. And also I read she had pooling around her rectum. Which could prove rape. But no rape kit was performed or samples from scrapings under her nails were taken and analyzed, and if so that info hasn't been released. Seems all hotels are different, we can't even be 100% sure the door was locked or if the alarm even worked. They said graffiti and cigarette butts were up there, so people were accessing the roof on occasion.

I don't know. I've had mental health episodes like this before and the footage just strikes me as a little sad more than anything. I mean, the fact that she ended up dead shortly after *is* terrifying, don't get me wrong, but the video on its own not so much. To me at least. Pushing all the buttons, hiding a bit when the elevator doesn't work, playing with her hands afterwards -- just seems like an episode. (Doing weird things with your hands, by the way, is a super normal way to self regulate, either intentionally or subconsciously. It's a bit like shaking your knee when you're nervous.) (as for the elevator not working, that honestly could have just been because she pushed all the buttons at once.)

ELISA is an acronym for a commonly used antibody test. There is nothing to freak out about (except you're tested positive for a disease). Just read it up on Wikipedia. An antibody test tests for specific antibodies in your blood which are marker that you had a specific illness. Like for TB, or Lyme, or a virus infection etc.

When you said the words “Dark Water” it got me thinking - I wonder if she was in a bad place mentally, if she was attempting to use the water tank as a sort of sensory deprivation tank? She may have removed her clothes in attempt to float more easily. Still very bizarre, but if you’re not in a good place mentally or emotionally you can tend to justify things differently. Such a strange case involving what seems like such a tortured young soul ❤️

I’m pretty sure she was pressing the “door hold” button. The Cecil also housed long-term residents so I think the elevator stayed open longer for when people moved furniture, belongings, etc.

Right, I live in southern California, not the LA region, but the cities around here treat homeless people alike, the city a while ago voted against building a local shelter (all the homeless shelters for our area are actually pretty far out of the way) because they were afraid having the shelter would attract even more homeless individuals and of course they didnt want to spend the resources 😒 and instead the city in the past year has spent money on adding useless signs of different cities within the area and like marks/ landmarks that are really just useless but make the city/county look more modern I guess??? I think it's a total waste of resources though and I constantly hear people complain of how we've gotten more homeless individuals living in and near the beach cities in my county. But again no one is intrested In sharing the abundance of resources our city clearly has to HELP people

The comments her roommates, the staff, and those at that concert I totally can relate to. I feel like the LAPD didn’t bother with the case due to the fact that she was a foreign national. The paperwork, communication between both law enforcement entities, and the leg work that is used to handle cases of foreign nationals is pretty intense. This is not an excuse for LAPD to improperly investigate this case.

I think her strange movements in the elevator was her being confused about the doors not closing. She might have been trying to trigger the door closing with the hand movements. I know she was off her meds but I also think there was foul play. That hotel is shady as hell. They're definitely covering up something. And the LAPD....a suspicious bunch. We don't know everything.

I wish you had looked further into the bipolar disorder theory. This sounds sensitive but theories like these other ones can be so detrimental to people that suffer from mental disorders. If her sister and the complete autopsy were correct, I think the hotel and the manager were neglectful. You can call adult protective services or have a 5150 if you believe the person is a danger to themselves or other people. I've been on similar medications to Elisa, I had withdrawals after a day of not taking them......... My memories are blacked out from that specific day, but apparently I had been hallucinating and screaming in my room. I kept insisting there was an intruder when my parents said no one else was in the room. I was completely manic and out of my mind. So my parents had me 5150ed as my behavior got out of hand. I woke up in a children's ward not remembering how I ended up there.

In all my time on the street, I never met another homeless person who was not addicted to either meth, heroin, or both. not a single one. I met one or two ladies who could clean up and become a 'down on their luck' sort that regular folks imagine _at least some_ of the homeless population to be, but in my experience, they simply don't exist. even the people who are a clear cut case of mental illness are addicted.

Sadly, I have to agree on the addiction. I used to think it was mostly just people who'd had really bad turns of luck. Losing a job, debt, that sort of thing. Turns out that a really high percentage of the homeless had those issues due to addiction because of gambling, drugs, alcohol etc. That doesn't mean they don't deserve a better life. We still need to find good, accessible ways to help them.
