I think it is good for people to be reminded how warmly audiences responded to Schwarzkopf's singing. She may not be young here, but everyone can see hear that her voice and artistry are superb. It is also wonderful to see Geoffrey Parsons , a truly gifted accompanist and gentleman who is greatly missed. I heard him accompany so many singers at Wigmore Hall.

ES loved this song; she recorded it several times and I heard her sing it more than once in the many recitals I heard. She was opposed to singing songs that were meant for a man's voice but two exceptions; this and Ungeduld. It was her last appearance in public and while she had to make adjustments vocally the performance was lovely. There is no one like her today and we are the poorer for it.

Her stance & (v little) movement account for much of the formidable effect & power of her singing art. And, as for intelligence, both musical & mental, well... Bravo!

I agree absolutely with you. It must have been a wonderful evening with one of the 20th Century Greats.

@@lochness11 Just an aside: how is it that we two have, it appears, the exact same taste in singers? Victoria...ah!! Kathleen "Kaff " Ferrier... ahhh.. & Elisabeth Schwarzkopf... ah ah... not to mention others & the same taste in music too?

Horses for courses. She is wonderful but there are other ways of being wonderful. I am a Stutzmann fan and whereas she began in her early 20s with very little movement she uses her body a lot now conducts as reg sings with Orpheo55. I have 'Dank An Gerald Moore' on vinyl with Victoria de los Angeles Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer Dieskau: Swoon!

She said later she thought she should have stopped earlier. ‘You have to distort vowels to get the sound out, and my it becomes not good.’ You hear precisely that here, but I’m sure her many fans were pleased she followed her heart and not her head.
@michaelpapadopoulos54503 ай бұрын
Yes, but she distorted vowels since the early 50s, it's very obvious in her Ariadne. It just got worse with time. An exasperating singer for me, wonderful phrases alternate with squeezed, distorted sounds all the time.

Her husband said it best (at her final concert two years later): “You’re a bloody miracle!”. QED

Well that’s nice considering he was an absolute ASS to her through their entire marriage. Including telling her once that she sang “like a pig”

An era passed and passed with a climax! La Diva's hair a soft silver Dietrich perm, her gleaming copper gown in the simple but sly drapery of a duchess and one delighted to engage her personal audience. Here is the Triumph of Vienna, mighty Wien, Capital of Music, after two great wars and the Great Depression. She is Austria's Statue of Liberty, from her roots in her teacher's nineteenth century (), carrying that very torch aloft, to retiring in her fabledprime, Her Grace is exactly the Duchess of Music as Jewel in her own right. Look only at those bones: her cheeks, her jaw, her now delicately aculpted eye-sockets, the echt accent of a born native swinging Kleio, Muse of History, from ländler to waltz and beyond in a few bare minutes of perfect pitch. Huzzah! Huzzah!! Huzzah!!! And Good Night, our Lady of the StellarSphere. May you sleep as well as you sang and still sing.

Elle n'a pas commencé à chanter qu'elle est applaudie à tout rompre ! Des critiques français pourtant très (trop) difficiles, disaient d'elle qu'elle était " le duvet de la lumière".
