1980 and 1981 I attended one week each year of her master classes at San Francisco Opera/Merola training program, equivalent of 10 days of bliss. The most important event in my opera buff devotion to opera. She was absolutely brilliant and insightful. During breaks she took up her knitting while generously responding to questions of SFO supporters' invited to this exclusive event. One student thankfully had the audacity to sing the clock soliloquy from Rosenkavalier, probably a set up to get her to descant on her most well known role. She ended up singing the entire aria with pauses to explain the vocal and dramatic complexity of each few phrases. A miraculous opportunity, likely made possible by SFO Director Kurt Adler one of her great friends. One of her favorite students was Hampson who later studied with her in Austria. Also Ruth Ann Swenson who had a remarkably pure soprano voice. But she was ruthless with singers she felt had no operatic prospects. In 1979 she came with her Angel records producer husband Walter Legge to give a joint master class. He was inflexibly opinionated and she was a match, such that they spent more time arguing over phrasing, breathing, diction interpretation than instructing, an amusing couples counseling session for observers. Fortunately he died and she came alone the next two years!

She is very.....firm. merciless even. But so honest. She is just as honest and straight forward when she loves something as when she disapproves with something.

What is with the vibrato of the baritone in blue sweater?....sounds a bit funny...
@GeorgiNM

1) Slow vibrato is a modern obsession it seems to me at least one can observe a faster vibrato much more often in pre-1940 recordings of successful singers + alternatively 2) People often tremble in public, and the connection to vibrato is an obvious one

Lav C, I wouldn't call it vibrato myself. I think of vibrato as something manufactured, a technique, a way of playing with the sound for a purpose, whether it's a string player, wind player or vocalist. What I hear with the blue-sweater baritone is the vibration of life itself. The voice of truth, if you like. John Denver, Judith Durham, Edith Piaf, Beniamino Gigli, Joseph Calleja - you hear the vibration of all living things . . .

@@GeorgiNM there are faster vibratos out there but I think his is a caprino issue. Not enough fluctuation of pitch in the vibrato. Luckily that is reversible! Wobbles are much more scary :(

Hello. Do you know who narrates? It sounds much like Richard Bonynge to me.

The narrator is Peter Bolgar. His diction is perfect.Thankyou for asking George. Wikipedia:- "Peter Bolgar (born 1936) is a British television and radio announcer, married since 1962 to Archers actress Angela Piper. He announced for BBC Television from 1967 to 1995, and since then, he has announced for the BBC World Service. He speaks with a clear, distinctive, slow-paced Received Pronunciation accent which is increasingly rare in modern broadcasting."

@@lochness11 Not his German diction, invariably: his Richard (in Richard Strauss), zum Beispiel, is NOT correct - in the handling of the CH, that is - rather surprisingly.

As much as I like her voice I have problems with Schwarzkopf's teaching. I feel it would be so much better if the singer was asked at the beginning to give their own interpretation of the aria and the character that they are portraying. Instead what we have is Schwarzkoft's own interpretation or role. The danger with this is that opera becomes fossilized. Indeed in the introduction where we see her interpretation of An Die Musik, she sings it wonderfully but for me her interpretation is far inferior to that of Kathleen Ferrier.

@SuperMagren Peinlich.

E.S. is wonderful--a singer for all seasons...But occasionally she really gets it wrong. "An die Musik" as performed here has all kinds of problems of mood, line, vowel color -- its total effect almost disjointed. Even Moore sounds uninspired. I suspect she was ill, very nervous or having personal problems. Her early recordings w/ Edwin Fischer light years better!

"No one is exempt from saying silly things... My opinions escape me as nonchalantly as they deserve.
