In the ~400 AD there were many Eastern Churches (which later became known as the Orthodox Churches), and the Latin (Roman) Church was being developed with its own identity, but they all pretty much were in communion with each other (except for heresies like Arianism). If you asked the Christians back then, they would simply say that they were Christians from X region but within the Universal (Katholikos) Church. That's what was called Christendom. In the High Middle Ages, the Eastern Churches would claim that the Roman Church had accepted some heresies, which is why they called themselves Orthodox (which means "correct doctrine") and the schism between the Roman and Eastern Churches occurred. Some Eastern Churches would later rejoin communion with the Roman Church, and they are currently known as the Eastern Catholic Churches,.but the majority didn't and they are the modern Orthodox Churches. If the Romans in AOE2 represent the Western Roman Empire (as opposed to the Byzantines representing the Eastern Roman Empire), then the Centurion is either early Roman Catholic, or Arian.

Besides armor penetration/ignoring armor like Urumi, Leitis, and Obuch, not a lot of melee units can effectively counter the Teutonic Knight. 13 armor isn't anything to laugh at since the average melee unit deals between 11 and 18 damage

Remember any unit with less than 14 melee damage will only deal 1 dmg per attack against tk TK also have the highest hit points out of any infantry unit and the highest melee damage when fully upgraded.

I do consider that the matchup could be different in some scenarios: some shotel warriors and costilliers wasted a lot of time running back and forward instead of fighting, as if they be looking the perfect parking lot before fight properly, wich kinda deters their battle but above all things I'm pleased of seeing the results, three of my fav units, the Boyards, and the Leitis fighted as well as I expected, and the others are the Keshiks, wich are great, but I wouldn't consider them anytime soon worthy as "one man army". I would always send them with camels or cav archers, depend on the enemy army

These units are weird. Infantry do quite well against them but they also stomp on some strong cavalry and even a couple of elephant units.

The reason in those fight the melee unit win is because they have bonus damage against cavalry or ignore/destroy armor (the unit main strong point besides the huge base attack)

@@Handepsilon You're severely overlooking their solo combat effectiveness. In case you didn't see them beat Cataphracts with huge advantage, War Wagons, Keshiks and both forms of Ratha. Did pretty well vs Konniks too.

I think that the Romans shouldn't develop Bloodlines like the Byzantines, maybe in compensation for that, reduce production cost.. It seems like a pretty strong unit for all bonuses it has, I think this unit is the most unbalanced in the civ. Byzantine Cataphracts don't have all the blacksmithing buffs and don't have Bloodlines, which balances out their area of effect strength, anti-cavalry, and deadly damage against infantry, but Centurions have all tech upgrades, with Bloodlines health, area strength effect for other units, decent/high base damage and even a charge attack that ends up giving it a +9 mortal

Well, seeing as how the Romans don't have any good trash, I think it's a worthwhile tradeoff. Just deny them gold, and they will sputter out. Their best trash is an average Halberdier among everyone else. They like the Turks are really powerful if you just let utilize all of their gold.

The Byzantines have Hussars, Paladins and Heavy Camels. Romans only have light cavalry and cavalier Byzantines also get full upgraded Arbalest and Skirmishers, while Romans lack Bracer and stuck with x-bows Byzantines get discount on Halberdiers, Skirmishers and Camels on top of that. The only discount Romans get is on Scorpions Byzantines have the option to go through multiple strategies because they have a very open tech tree and bonuses. While Rome is basically a one-trick pony that depends of Legionaries supported by Centurions and Scorpions who all cost gold.

I do wonder if Centurions are a bit overtuned right now, as they massacred a lot of units that had equal resources even without having access to their primary thing (The Infantry Buff Aura) to help the battle. Even Vikings, who have a hefty attack bonus against cavalry took a hell of a beating (Going from 28 to 12) against a unit fighting with one hand behind its back.

Chu Ko Nu performs really well against high pierce armor unit because - if the armor > damage, the damage dealt will always be 1, never 0 (otherwise Teutonic Knight and Boyar will be extremely broken) - Chu Lo Nu fires 5x low damage arrows. Vs the Centurion in this case (which has insanely high pierce armor), each can deal a consistent 5 damage per turn even with armor vs other archer units which deals appro. 7-10 damage per turn not accounting for armor (therefore almost completely negated by the armor)

The high Imperial age was, The late Imperial however... Basically copied the huns, the parthians and the persians, so they made super fast tanky cavalry, predecesor of the Knight.

because Cataphracts are an anti-infantry unit. You counter Cataphracts with heavy cavalry, like knights. The Cataphracts lost because they were fighting the a unit that counters them. You can also counter Cata's with archers.
