The Heavy Scorpion is a light siege unit in Age of Empires II that can be trained at the Siege Workshop once the Imperial Age is reached. The Heavy Scorpion fires large arrow-like bolts. It is effective against groups of enemy units as the bolts cause damage to multiple units in a straight line. Unlike the Mangonel line, they do not damage friendly units. This can make all the difference in a pitched close quarters battle.
Cost: 75 Wood, 30 Gold (Romans)
Firing Rate: Ballistas (+33%, Romans only)
Accuracy: Ballistics (hit moving targets, Romans only)
Romans: Heavy Scorpions cost -60% gold and benefit from Ballistics.
In the total resources series, we consider 100 Food = 100 Wood = 100 Gold. In the equal resources series, we consider 100 Food = 100 Wood = 17 Gold.

Three points of interest: 1. No infantry won, mostly due to low HP and a lot of clumping together. 2. Only four cavalry units won, mostly by killing the ballista quickly. 3. Fight fire with fire - how three siege units won against ballista, and missionaries won by conversion.

In real game only War Wagons, Ballista eles and Husite wagons would be useful because of Romans meatshield. So Onagers, Bombards cannons, trebs and Britons arbs with good micro are the only options it seems... Everything requires huge amounts of micro skills to protect and manage...

In short, only units with sufficiently high pierce armor and no armor class the Scorpion has a bonus against can win, with the Ballista Elephant being an exception because it has the same pass-through damage. The Roman Scorpion costs -60% gold, is affected by Ballistics, fires 33% faster, and has a minimum range of merely 1, effectively allowing a group to always be able to engage melee units. This unit is disgustingly OP.

They are nearly not as good as it seems, these videos are always extremely inaccurate because they are AI fighting bunched up with zero micro, most of these units would have very much beated the Scorpions even with a simple were in spread formation (Not even counting meatshields or more advanced micro). In a real game Roman Scorpions die to what every other Scorpion dies anyways (Onagers, Bombard Cannons..), and since Romans lack BBCs on their own or good Monks these scorpions are still awfully fragile outside of TGs where your flank will have BBCs for you. They are still pretty good but the unit is too fragile

@Mattroid99 in most games, a player with bombard cannons will target all of them onto one monk, rather than firing one cannonball for each monk, therefore one-shotting vs two-shotting is largely irrelevant. And of course Sanctity makes no difference vs Onagers or Siege Onagers.

160 hp and 7 pierce armor, Scorpions deal only 10 dmg per shot +bonus anti-cav dmg (after accounting for armor) and there's relatively a lot of Keshiks, perfect combination to counter Scorpions and live long enough to get under their minimum range in big enough numbers to score a win.

Shrivamshas are very fast and don't take any projectile damage for the first few hits. They close the gap too quickly whereas Elephants not only are too slow but also take bonus damage.
