I haven't messed with the settings a bunch in 4.0/Odyssey for a while since it sucks too much, but people on the Reddit and the forums (last I saw) were still allllways complaining about the aliasing. I don't think there is an actual solution, I don't even know if a 4090 solves it. You'll get better textures and frames and whatnot of course, but the aliasing might just be something they really messed up on. The players bug Fdev for a solution constantly, but I would be surprised if one is coming. So people might say ya just need an even fancier GPU, but in my completely non-expert opinion I am skeptical that solves it. It's a "I'll believe it when I see it" situation for me when others claim that it looks fine-- some people claim it looks "fine" on a worse card, some say it's fine on a nicer card, I don't really trust their judgment. I would need a Digital Foundry-type breakdown to believe them, since so many players have been flat out wrong when we're debating the issues with Odyssey's visuals and performance. Due to the nature of the game and the weirdos it attracts (me included), some people will defend the game belligerently even when trying to talk about something objective like performance. It's ridiculous that a 3080 isn't more than good enough for such a graphically unimpressive game... it's sure more than good enough for legacy Horizons, and the 4.0/Odyssey didn't exactly introduce a mindblowing overhaul to the visuals. To fix the VR stuff for the game, they likely need at least one person who actually likes the genre the game exists in, and is someone who takes the experience seriously enough to actually want the VR to work right. I don't think they have anyone like that in a position of influence working on the game. Same thing for stuff like exploration or smuggling, if they could only have ONE PERSON who actually understood what those types of players wanted, maybe something could be different. I lump those issues in with VR, cuz it's just a fundamental misunderstanding by Fdev of what makes the game special.

Duuuuude, thank you so much for this video. I found it extremely helpful. Reducing the headset resolution turned the game from 'choppy as hell' to 'smooth as butter'.

At 4:10 you mention there's a stutter that didn't show up on the performance HUD. This isn't a "Application dropped frame" or a "compositor dropped frame". It is a "Link dropped frame". In the ODT change the performance HUD from "Performance" to "Link" and these dropped frames will show up here.

Tip if y have more than 10 gb vram y can put all texture things to high.. they do not influence the performance on high end cards much.. My findings are Ambient occlusion really expensive Shadow are killers Fsr is less good than cas but performance gain is higher Render distance can be expensive depending The other real killer is of course the hmd and supersampling I find that concentrating on hmd scale 1.3 to 1.5 i Or for more fine grained use only oculus slider or steam slider and keep hmd at 1.0

I was done with odyssey in VR Until one day I doing research on bottlenecking from resolution ,and the word out is 50'50 , but PC Builds has the most reliable one ...Went to Pc Builds and put in my GPU and CPU and clicked on intence Grahics option , not specific games , then put in 1080p and click enter , scrolled down and list of resolutions and hand full of ones that had zero bottlenecks for my CPU and GPU , wrote them down and went into custom resolution in my AMD suite made all of them , click overide , and they all showed up in my windows option and in Odyssey.......Done Odyssey now runs good as horizons in VR on my 5k super

Wow.. I came back and I'm just so disappointed in the game. I had a mix of high/ultra before this update with 1.4x SS and solid 40fps now I get fps drops to 29-31 in stations and the aliasing is so bad even with the SS applied that I didn't think I had SS applied. Just so ridiculous for them to release an update that just ruins the games performance to such a massive degree. Probably going to go from high/ultra to low/medium.

have you tried using Virtual Desktop with the quest 2 instead of the native Oculus Link/Airlink ? i have always had way better performance with Virtual desktop on all VR games. Airlink is kind of poorly optimized for some reason

It’s funny you mention this as I actually went into Elite with VD yesterday to give it a fresh try. A lot of people seem to prefer VD, but I’ve always had a smoother experience with Air Link. Elite performed about the same when I tested it yesterday however, although the colours were better (which is great feature of VD).

It says you're playing Odessey but you're in VR. I thought that there was no VR support for the new expansion????

You can still play Odyssey in VR, but the on-foot sections transition to a large flat screen, so those areas are not available to play in true VR. All the previous sections from Horizons (Space flight, planet surfaces, SRV etc) are all still perfectly fine in VR (albeit with the new graphics engine, which I personally like less).

Thanks for the settings, i'm getting back into Elite with my Q2. I'll be probably setting high as the baseline and going from there with my 4080. I can't do FSR, it looks so bad. i must do normal. If you are doing FSR (or scaling in normal mode), you are down and upsampling, then re sampling to your headset. Seeing as Q2 runs at 72hz by default. What do you set your frame rate limit and sync in the game graphics settings? or are they ignored in VR?

Identical system to yours (except 6950 xt) can do vr medium, blur off, Anisotropic filtering to 16x, SS 1.0, FXAA, HMD SS 1.5. I found image quality in FSR is worse than fidelity CAS, shimmering is unbearable. and yes, im on a pico 4. Use ethernet VR desktop at Ultra locked at 72 fps, which in oculus terms translates to 5472 x 2736 resolution. steam set to 100 percent on the resolution slider. gpu usage around 85-90 percent in station and around 70 in space. but somehow the image quality just feels .....:(

For the shared areas (space, stations, planet surfaces) I believe Horizons is basically identical to Odyssey since they’re both on the 4.0 version. I haven’t tested them independently however, so unless I’ve missed something then that would be the way it works. Odyssey-specific sections such as settlements on-foot still have performance issues beyond the standard areas, and are even more inconsistent. Edit: legacy Horizons (3.8) has great performance.

Glad to see you doing ED content again. While I get that FDev isn't focused on VR support, do you thinking updating FSR to 2.0 or something similar would be enough to get performance to acceptable limits, or is the code in this game just too buggered for a "simple fix" to improve things?

I honestly wouldn’t be able to say. FSR 2.0 in No Man’s Sky has pretty good results in the Quest 2, so I’m sure it will benefit Elite. I think the difference in performance between 3.8 and 4.0 is telling though, and I know people have speculated that FDev are pushing the engine to the very limits right now. If they could just get it to be more consistent, it would make a big difference in allowing for small tweaks.

Late to the video, but you may be able to help. This is more about your recording than actual performance settings. How do you fix the..orientation??? I guess is the word. So when you’re looking straight, everything is straight and symmetrical. When I look straight in the headset, the view on the desktop is cutoff from the whole picture. I don’t know how exactly to describe it. Maybe you can look at my my recent stream on twitch (same channel name) and see what I’m talking about.

It looks like you’re recording the left eye only, which is pretty standard for VR recording. In SteamVR VR View, there is an option for both eyes but you then get a slightly odd meshing of the two eyes which some people don’t like.

I found supersampling is a big hater... I put vr on ultra, but turned SS to 1.0.... runs smoothly now! (I had a some stutter still in a station)

I have a pair of 1080ti’s and it stutters like hell. I’ll have to try a few of these out. My machine is about 5 years old So maybe the processor can’t hack it.

It will be difficult to run on a 1080ti at modern headset resolutions (keep in mind 2x 1080ti in SLI won’t work in VR so it will only be using one unfortunately). I used to run it on my original Vive and a Rift on a 1080ti and it could just about reach decent enough framerates on those lower resolution headsets.

I definitely understand that there are diminishing returns after a certain point, and getting the balance between performance and SS is in part a personal choice. But in this case I don’t think it’s necessarily overkill, mainly because I’m reducing in game SS while increasing HMD image quality, and the combination of the two in different ratios can affect things in different ways. But experimentation might give others a different way to balance things to suit them.

Fdev really screwed up with 4.0. I find it unplayable personally. Even when the game is running well, the lighting is all messed up. I get constant lighting fluctuations when flying around in space because the game can't make up it's mind about it. Playing in flatscreen or VR makes no difference with it. It's extremely distracting.

I tried using my Quest 2 with Link Cable I got from them with Elite Dangerous but I am also getting that jitter like I see in the vid,it bugs my eyes out :(

The reason there is jitter in the video is because I’m playing at 72 fps in the Quest but KZbin will only play at 60 fps so there will always be video jitter in that scenario. From the metrics, you can see a solid 72 fps line on the graph indicating it is perfectly smooth to me in the headset. If you’re getting jitter in the headset then you won’t be hitting a constant 72 fps (or whichever matching refresh rate you’re using in your Quest 2), so my advice would be to use the performance overlay in Oculus Debug Tools while playing Elite to see how close or how far you are from hitting a solid, native framerate.

Have you tired setting resolution to native. 100% in all areas..that's normally where I start.. you are supersampling and upscaling at the same time which can really ruin an image.. worth a try

If you launch it via the Oculus app then it used to allow for Touch controller support. However, I haven’t been able to get that to work in 4.0. It wouldn’t surprise me if they removed it.

Instead of FSR try this. Switch off Anti Aliasing and set Supersampling to 0.75 . You may be able to push HMD image quality to 1.75 or higher.

Another thing to try. Set the refresh rate to 90Hz. Then when reproduction kicks in the base frame rate will be 45 FPS instead of 36 FPS.

I don’t believe I do. When you select FSR it disables SS and replaces it with quality/performance settings for FSR.

Yes, I also assume HMD image quality is some kind of Supersampling, but I’m a little unclear how it interacts with FSR. I was under the impression it might be applied post-FSR, giving some added benefit in clarity but I’m honestly not certain either way. It definitely has a performance impact, but it might benefit reducing it and checking the impact on clarity.

The Odyssey AA is known garbage, a lot of the elements on screen are not run through the AA pass. I don't know why. It's so bad. It's been highlighted to the devs as a serious problem since launch. It's not just VR that fdev is ignoring. It is the flat screen game as well.
