I have two full playlists of exploration content on my channel heading out to Beagle Point and back for my third time which took many months to complete, and after I got back I bought a fleet carrier in anticipation of doing a Deep Space Carrier series, but I just couldn't bring myself to go back out again. This isn't because I'm not an explorer; quite the opposite. I grew up on Star Trek and the idea of finding super cool things out in the galaxy appeals to me. The issue for me is that there just isn't enough content out there to justify making long journeys to distant destinations outside of just the "prestige" of having gone out that far, which frankly isn't nearly as impressive as it once was. Dedicating months to that singular goal just isn't worth it to many of us. For a Distant Worlds to attract a large number of people, there really needs to be a massive exploration related expansion to justify a commitment of that magnitude.

same, the journey to Sag A* was one of the coolest experiences in the game. but after you did it once, there is not much else to see. I think the only way Distant Worlds 3 would be made truly interesting is if Frontier gave us atmospheric planets to explore. To be able to traverse such planets would massively shift the interest of everything - being able to goto planets with different atmospheric environments would be quite something to see - a gauntlet of extreme hot, extreme cold, and Earth-like worlds.
@HCforLife1Күн бұрын
Yup. I am saying that from a long time. New types of planets to land with atmospheres and some clouds/weather system would be it

There is no way FDev introduces atmospheric planets. That will require much more investment (many months of full-time work of dozens of developers) than they are willing to spend on Elite.

@@equeim yeah it really just doesn't make sense for them to put all the time and effort involved with making this happen. That's just WAY too big, and I don't blame Frontier for not implementing that at all.

Thanks for spreading word about this, as well as continuing to put out great content! I absolutely want to see DW3 take place, and I would be there with one of my ships-of-the-line! DW2 was a huge deal for me, and I wrote a series of short stories as sort of a "travelogue" to document my journey. I can't imagine I wouldn't do the same thing for DW3, except this time I might take footage of my exploration and maybe narrate it. What I'd really like to see is another mining-driven community goal like DW2, maybe put a station at Beagle point, or maybe out in the "Star Trek Delta Quadrant" where player charting/exploration is lower than the rest of the galaxy. It'd increase the likelihood of new expeditions and maybe make new discoveries! More importantly, if Frontier really is on board to get more involved this time, this expedition could turn out to be something really special.
@notverygoodguyКүн бұрын
I had started my circumnavigation of the galaxy just before Distant Worlds 1 started off so couldn't join it. I remember turning up at Beagle Point two days after they all left. I must say they had cleaned up nicely after themselves and not even left any footprints in the sand :) I watered the plants and continued on my way. They returned home before I made it back. I did that journey with an Asp kitted for exploration and with no engineering and before neutron star boosts were a thing. I miss those days of limited jump capability.
@FlecheDeFerКүн бұрын
Biggest difference is FC: back in the day, when you went into the Black, there was nothing in front of you, civilisation was behind, you FELT alone, but now, there will always be a FC somewhere in front of you, civilisation is "all around", and while this is obviously a major plus for explorers, it also completely changed the feeling exploration gave you, and that is a major minus.
@flenser404Күн бұрын
Maybe player controllable Carriers was a mistake?
@amjackson1975Күн бұрын
Space is a big place. Regardless of the number of FC out there you will still find yourself by yourself in a place with 400 billion stars. Yes, DSSA FCs you can easily find, but if you truly want to engage in being alone in the vastness of the Void you can do that. I explored with DW2 and for a whole year afterwards. During the Thargoid war I explored for months without running into civilization until I came back to participate in taking down Titans. So, exploring hasn’t much changed. Yeah, there’s more people around, but space is a big place. o7
@dvdmuckleКүн бұрын
The forum post specifically calls this out, and also asked that people not bring their own personal carriers along.
@FlecheDeFerКүн бұрын
@ I agree but I'm talking about the feeling we had back then. It has changed altogether and won't come back, because there is always a FC somewhere to do repairs or simply to see people, even if it is NPCs at the bar: it isn't lonely the way it used to be. Dosen't mean I don't love explo, I still do, and FC also bring a lot to explorers.
@rags707Күн бұрын
The game was much better without fleet carriers. They would be cool if they were rare, like the original intent of one carrier per squadron. The way they are now is ridiculously terrible, they are like plastic trash, everywhere all the time. Go to any notable system and scan or open the system map, completely fouled by dozens of carriers. I have one for the utility, but I would gladly give it up to get them out of the game, or at least squadron limited. While I very much hope I am wrong, I fear this new base building mechanic will be more of the same.

Greetings Ant! Thank you for the heads up - and for staying with Elite and sharing through your videos. I have been on hiatus from Elite mostly since DW2, but I would consider coming back for this. The community around exploration and player driven events and expeditions was what I enjoyed most about this game. I took part in DW1 and DW2, helped organized some player events (exploration wings and formation flying) during those expeditions and also poured my enthusiasm and countless hours into the Galactic Mapping Project. Those were REALLY good times :). The prospect of having to grind to get the jump range of my old Asp Explorer on par with the modern ships is a bit of a turnoff though... ;). But his is something I would consider taking part in - even if it means limping along in an antiquated vessel that I have stuck with since the launch of the game :).

12 years after helping Kickstart this I was very happy to give FD more money to buy an explorer-build Mandalay. Just a thought.
@FknGrrr5 сағат бұрын
Hi Corbin - Satsuma here 😀 There's no real reason why you'd have to fly anything with more range than your DW2 ship. Sure, longer jump ranges can enable you to get further out in the fringes, but mostly longer range just lets you travel faster. And if you're thinking of returning just for DW3, you have to factor the time you'd spend grinding out engineering versus the time you'd save on the trip. My old Asp Explorer from DW1 had about a 34 LY jump range. The trip from the bubble to Beagle Point took about 35 hours in terms of traveling time alone - not counting scanning, distractions, playing around in base camps, etc. My DW2 Krait Phantom had a jump range of about 52 LY (low for an engineered Krait, but I was running a lot of shields and A-rated thrusters), and could reach Beagle Point in 23 hours. My current Mandalay has a 75 LY jump range (and that's not particularly high for a Mandalay, which floors me), and can manage the trip in about 16 hours, saving 7 hours over my DW2 ship, or 19 over my DW1 ship. But I can guarantee you I've spent more than 19 hours grinding materials and unlocking engineers. mike_lowndes mentioned buying a Mandalay via ARX, and that's honestly what I'd do if I was coming back from scratch. I mean, It's what I did, so... 😉 In seriousness, a Mandalay, fit for exploration with shields and a buggy and absolutely no engineering can make 41.5 LY. 52, if you unlock the Guardian FSD booster. That's a ready-made DW3 ship with 0 grind at all.

I thought the grind would be something I hated but I found it relaxing so far and I did the Encoded and raw materials already and working on the manufactured runs now in prep for engineer unlocks With all the applications and player content out there and some patience, you can learn a ton of things that would take you many hours to find out on your own. I always watch ED videos in my down time if they teach things. This community is very robust, which is needed for a game with such a high learning curves for things. Took a break from the game for 7 years. Returned recently when a friend and I decided we wanted to get back into it so we can stay in more contact. We live on other sides of the world and don’t get to see each other often. A new Distant Worlds would be a very cool for us to join and form some community

I remember the first Distant Worlds, did the whole thing in a DBX.

I've gotten back into ED in the last couple of days and this is super exciting! I would love to take part in DW3 if it really happens. I've got my 70+LY DBX fueled up and ready to jump!

I did DW1 and DW2. Signed up for DW3, can't wait.

I started playing Elite Dangerous around the time of DW2 but I didn't know about it at the time. DW3 would be a great motivator for me to finish up the last engineer requirements and finally build my fully engineered exploration ship, though.

I still have the DW1 badge somewhere on my hard drive. Also I made it to beagle point on a stripped out Sidewinder. Good times indeed for ED pioneers.

Played the original Elite in the eighties. Came across Dangerous and started playing again, mostly as a sight seeing pilot. Yes I missed the two Distant Worlds events. I would like to be a part of the third one.

Yeah I never really thought about that... The game has massively changed since the early days, where the end game was considered going to Sagittarius A and Colonia lol ... At least for explorers which most of us were in those times. Since, as was illustrated here, everybody was trying to get a sense of what the many various forms the galaxy could take, with its unique systems.

Didn’t start playing until after DW1/2. Looking forward to a shot at DW3

I'm in. I'm an old elite player from the 80s. I wasn't able to game much during dw1$2, but I read the media reports and made it my mission to get to beagle point during the pandemic. I am absolutely down for a dw3.

Thoroughly enjoyed DW2; DW3 sounds like an interesting idea. How to incorporate the new game mechanics is a key question, as is laid out in the Frontier Forums post. Capturing the sense of community, "Out in the Black" exploration vibe, and "doing something that had never been done before" will be challenging with some of the new game mechanics. (I'm looking at you, Fleet Carriers.) It would be even more interesting if we could tie in the new Colonization capability with the proposed narrative generation, and a little technical help from FDev in supporting the narrative. (Establishing another version of Colonia in the galaxy that we can colonize from?) Gotta dust off my Gold Krait Phantom for this one!

Please let this happen. I did DW2 in an unengineered ASP, and it was one of the most epic experiences I've ever had in any game. I have the riches I have today in Elite almost entirely thanks to DW2 and the pages and pages of exploration data I turned in after returning from the edge.

I miss Elite (Xbox) played everyday from when it was first game preview and I was there for all the cool stuff that happened over the years. Some awesome times and memories indeed! Is Raxxla still a thing? The whole mysteries within the lore is what compelled me to get to the sagA* in a clipper! Haha

Been playing Elite on and off since day 1 on Xbox (before that on the Amiga), then joined via PC when Odyssey came out. I never did DW1 or DW2 and I've toyed with going to the other side of the galaxy, but the thought of just doing it for the sake of doing it stopped me. There's always things to do in the bubble. Now I'm retired I have the time to join a DW3 if it happens and it may be the incentive I need to venture into the black.

I missed the original Distant Worlds by months. And depending on what is involved, i would definitely like to participate in a Distant Worlds 3. Hopefully waiting to see what develops.

I took part in DW2 so DW3 is definitely in my interest. It was one of my favourite online moments i've ever had gaming but what made it special was finding amazing sights whilst finding new unseen sights along the way. Atmospheric worlds and exobiology will help add to the experience but we definitely need more variety of landable worlds with easier ways to find interesting system compositions like worlds with close orbiting moons and moons with high inclination orbits around planets with rings. Exploration just needs a bit more variety.

I was around for Distant Worlds 2, but couldn't participate at the time. I loved all the community activity around it though. I've since looped my brother into the game and would LOVE to participate in Distant Worlds 3 and drag him along.

I took part in DW2, but did not make it to Beagle Point, even though I had a Krait Phantom with 40+ LY jump range. I would be interested in partaking in DW3. To hear that Drew is interested to coming up with a narrative that relates to DW3, reminds me of the little bits he included in his Elite Dangerous book, Premonition. An event like this might make me want to look for that ELW orbiting a black hole west of Colonia, that I found but never bookmarked.

Elite Dangerous is the type of game, with a scope so large, you could easily draw people into a DW event yearly with challenges for exploration and discovery, and it would take a lifetime for them to run out of opportunity with the galaxy as it already has been for over a decade.

Been to Beagle Point a couple of times thanks to DW1 and DW2, had fun and some interesting moments, like some player showboating his piloting skills or lack thereof, as he crashed into the designated landing area and took out another commander, I think we were around 20k ly in at that stage and I remember words were said. Both times took me an age to get back to the bubble and the idea of doing this a third time... I must need a sanity check because hell yeah I'm in.

Haven't been in any player driven event, but I'd love to be able to join Distant Worlds 3. Only want you'll hear from me though is seeing beautiful. Don't care if they've been seen before, just wanna be able to get some magnificent and majestic screenshots!

Always wanted to join the previous Distant Worlds expeditions, but never got around to it. I would love to join this one if they do have one. Perhaps they could incorporate going on foot somewhere as part of the journey? Or FDev could have some sort of special mineral or ore for us to mine on one of the planets along the way as a memento? Or maybe we could bring that ore back to an engineer and they could give us a unique boost to some ship stat, or make a special shield? Just throwing out ideas.

I've never been around for a DW expedition - I'm currently doing my own trip to Sag A* and back. If I had some commanders to do this with, with cool events along the way, I'd definitely do DW3! Elite hits different with friends!

i'm quite a casual elite player and i always enjoyed exploration/cargo in it, watching what DW is made me love the idea to join those expeditions but never had the chance that seemed never come back, now i would love to join the event, go further i've never been

Sounds amazing. En route we could have SRV Race tournaments, Canyon Racing with little fast ships, and lots of general hooning around. How about racing through planetary rings with different classes of ships?

I personally would love to be involved in something like that. I was actually in a distant part of the galaxy, when the thargoids attacked earth.And I wasn't able to make it to the blockade distant worlds, three feet would be a lot of fun.
