if i remember right, you can scan the thing with your ship, without using the srv. its hard to scan with the big ships like the corvette because the nose is so long. the sidewinder is perfect for missions like these

I used to use the courier for these and point that long nose right up to the beacon, do the scan then back away.

I always do these in my DBX, hit silent running and get the nose of the ship upclose and personal with the data point. Scan and leave, no trespass fines

As long as I've played (4 yrs now) I'd never done any of these so I had a bit of fun the last few days doing quite a few of them for encoded materials and influence points for some BGS mischief my mates & me have been making. I'll add a couple points to what Ric said here. First, I did all of my work with a ship only. The new Mandalay (if you have one is perfect for this sort of thing). I found that some systems will have more than one planet to visit that have an Artificial Structure on them. Some planets also can have more than one structure to visit. I've seen as many as three (3) on a single planet and as many as 3 planets in a system to visit. You'll need to do all of these to successfully complete your mission. If there's any blue left on your navigation list you're not done yet. Also, not all Artificial Structures will only have sentry skimmers. All have skimmers but some also have turreted weapons on the ground that will start firing on you as soon as you complete your scan. So be ready to back up, fly up, and foxtrot oscar out as soon as your scan is done. And one last point about the fines you get is that in systems where you've got multiple visits the "locals" may notice that you have a bounty/fine on you and either interdict you or start firing if they see you. Be aware that you might have to diddi mau out if/when that happens. But it's all part of the fun and makes the mats and credits worthwhile.
