"Get yourself blown up because it's free!" - Scott Manley 2015

Solo Play isn't actually off-line; it's on-line, but without any other human players. So the universe state is still the same, and what you do has an effect on the open play universe.
@scottmanley9 жыл бұрын
+Chris V Which is exactly what I said.
@mdamon069 жыл бұрын
+Chris V which is horrible, gaming ruining and defeats the purpose of half the mechanics of the game. Because powerplay makes ZERO sense to be affecting the public universe when youre doing shit in SOLO. This might as well be a giant single player game that just feeds off a database to change your trade info and power play stats periodically.
@chrisv44969 жыл бұрын
+Scott Manley It's not, though.@1:29 you clearly say "Solo mode is off-line."
@scottmanley9 жыл бұрын
+Giant|2obot I've always thought that Solo play should create NPC's that are based on real players.
@chrisv44969 жыл бұрын
Giant|2obot I actually kind of like the way solo mode works; sometimes I want to play the game and do the stuff I want to do without worrying about a PC griefer. And you're honestly going to complain about a solo game that continuously changes and evolves? Gamer desires have changed since I was young.

This game is pretty fun and Horizons will definitely bring about some good new content... but I have one huge problem with it that prevents me from really getting into it: it's so damn empty. Every system is exactly the same; there are just a bunch of barren planets and (seemingly) deserted space stations floating around. I want to see people! I want busting hub stations and cities filled with people coming and going! Of course I still want the vast expanses and quiet systems, but considering the sheer number of systems in the game it would be literally no problem to have a few systems that have been handcrafted by the developers, and those that want can literally never go there if they so choose. I just want the world to feel alive, and I can't think of a better way to do that than add some actual centers of civilization, rather than several million small outposts scattered around. What do you guys think?
@Elrarion29 жыл бұрын
+The Storm They need a heat map (Num of players X avg time spent) so that it draws players together and they also need to have it so certain systems actual draw people in for example maybe ships are on sale in that specific system and maybe some systems like Faction capital ones have a bulletin board that gives you higher payed missions that span more then just 1 jump away from the system your already in.
@AthAthanasius9 жыл бұрын
+The Storm Did you try going to every Community Goal system, and appropriate places in those systems? They do tend to draw players together. That and I know both helpful and not so helpful people hang around the common starter systems to help or hassle newbies.
@TeamEnderman13379 жыл бұрын
+The Storm Don't get me wrong, I love the game as it is, but I do tend to agree with you on this. You'd think that any of only three stations in any given system would be quite possibly the busiest place imaginable. People streaming in and out of the letterbox like there's no tomorrow, and all that. Not necessarily actual players either, but the extra traffic would add to the atmosphere. I'd also like to see (or more appropriately, hear) some voice comms between the station and the ships, like an air traffic controller at an airport, except in space! The text chat is just not immersive in that respect. It would be extremely nice if there was the ability to be a controller and get paid in credits for your work, directing traffic and stuff. Fines would be issued if two ships crashed due to your negligence, etc. They would, of course, be mostly NPCs and the occasional commander who wants to follow instructions, but that wouldn't happen to often. It would be something to do other than flying a ship around. Maybe when we can walk about on stations it will be a reality! We can only hope!

On your steam remark at 14:20. Horizon is vailable on Steam, but as a stand-alone game, separated from the previous version of Elite Dangerous, instead of something like a DLC. Frontier surprised us by releasing it the same day on steam as they did themselves. Also that goes your way by saying that basically Horizon is the new season, new game of the new year.

Thanks Scott, was a relief to see what is possible from the word go. Yet although I start today at the same point or station, your missions were not available! Pity you have so many negative comments about the game being dry and just a Sim at best. Well you and I know that is exactly what we wanted when we bought the game, a real as possible experience, so you actually feel you achieved something after flying so far. Or that the very hard earned cash you put into a ship is something you can loose in a fight, or that its simply refreshing when a game forces you to use your imagination more. Then their is the 600 000 billion stars to consider, having enough missions to do is a matter of perspective, I for one want to feel that there will always be more stars to see and explore. Thanks for the well done walk through and start, I think the feeling of driving on a planet that I had landed on in VR is the best gaming experience I have yet had! Yet thats VR for you, your there!

@lightlandstrider9 жыл бұрын
+rolf ski It's more like a simulator than a fast paced action game. Actually the better definition is a huge galactic sandbox where you choose what you want to do with it, to some that is fine, others dislike it. Honestly I get the feeling that to get what everyone seems to think is the "best space game" we will still have to wait a couple of years, by then Star Citizen will (maybe) be finished and E:D will have had even more content added to it. If you aren't convinced just wait until then. Perhaps time will allow to quench the thirst of so many space enthusiasts.

FYI with the missions they have you pretty much need to have discovery scanner on all ships as a lot of these locations you have to scan planets to find the surface stations to make the deliveries. The bonus to this is that you can level up your exploration status and sell the data to stellar Cartographic.

When plotting a route before accepting a cargo related mission you should max out the cargo slider in the galaxy map to make sure you can do the route with that cargo as well. And in the system map is a tab now which lists all stations and settlements. And I have yaw on my stick and roll on my pedals, simply because I use the stick for the precise stuff and rolling doesn't need to be too precise. It's simply more comfortable even if I don't use it too much, but I couldn't really get used to roll on the stick at all, especially when it comes to aiming at a target. A lot of people who use KB/M have the same problem and for them it's also advisable to putt roll on the keyboard instead. There's also a little bolard ship indicator when you're at the right spot for boarding / transferring cargo. But yeah, avoid STRONG signal sources if you're a new player, there are also unknown and weak ones which are more suited to inspect them without too much risk.
@kendokaaa9 жыл бұрын
Scott, the minimum requirement for VR is a 980, not Ti. On another note, there is another factor that ups the performance required, it's that distortion correction is performed on the image by rendering to a higher resolution (so for example the DK2 may be 1080p but stuff is rendered at 2364x1461). So already close to 1440p at 75hz and the consumer VR HMDs are higher resolution and higher framerate.

Hey scott, just wanted to discuss what are some of the advantages of having a base in the middle of a crater? Ive seen it lots so far in horizons. My thoughts are: smoother terrain, less chance of meteor impact, possible temperature/radiation control, minerals from the original impact. Some big downfalls would be: impaired LOS communications difficulty of access. Any thoughts? Is this something that could be considered in the future in real life?

"Don't make the mistake of binding your yaw to the x-axis"? I usually don't feel irked by anything in Manley videos but.... bah, humbug and nonsense! While you fly largely on rolling rather than yawing, the roll doesn't need to be all that accurate. My control over my stick's twist is pretty crap and my old stick's twist is terrible to begin with, so I bound roll to twist, and put the yaw... on the x-axis. I get tremendous accuracy when aiming fixed weapons this way. It felt weird for the first few hours, but muscle memory is a wonderful thing; it's now second nature to me. This was a brilliant move for me, not a mistake, and it's seen me through months of piracy and murd... bounty hunting. My advice is that you bind whatever you want to where ever you feel like you need it. It's not wrong if it works brilliantly for you. They key words are "works" and "for you". It all depends on you, and your equipment.
@scottmanley9 жыл бұрын
+maclypse I on the other hand have found the twist control on my X52 to be sufficient for shooting down bad guys even in games like Star Citizen which are dominated by Yaw & pitch.

You can put thrusters on other buttons too. On my Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS I have a rocker analog on the back of the throttle I use for lateral thrust and I just use buttons for up and down. In fact in E:D you can also use any button as a modifier, so holding my button 8 changes the functions of almost every other button on my flight stick. My hat is on the stick itself and I use it for other things not thrust related, button 8 doubles it's function too. Between my 12 buttons and the hat switch and this modifier ability, I don't ever use the keyboard, mouse, or the function menu on the right, even the ship lights have a button.
@scottmanley9 жыл бұрын
+Alshain01 It's absolutely possible, but it's an easier learning curve if you have a less complicated control system. I mean I really just wanted to highlight how important lateral thrust controls are.

13:34 Don't compare Elite to crap like Madden. While I've never played a Madden game, I find it hard to believe it took them any more than ten iterations to really hammer home a good football simulator. They're on, what, twenty? Twenty-five? Google says it's been around since about 1989. Madden doesn't need yearly releases. They're probably little more than roster updates these days. I'm honestly curious who buys them every year, making the yearly releases commercially viable. (My theory is that each iteration is bought primarily by that year's budding jocks, and that almost nobody owns two different iterations.) No, I think of Elite Dangerous more as an MMO. It's got the makings of an MMO. Just like WoW releasing a new expansion every couple years, Elite is doing the same. No subscription fee with Elite though; that's always a plus.

why does youtube not show a message if you're trying to navigate off the page while writing a message... this is the third time i'm writing this my experience with horizon so far: SRV got destroyed because i got stuck on a ramp with no way to move AT ALL missions are pretty much ALL surface missions (or unavailable) the one space mission i had was a battle where the enemy destroyed me in about 10 seconds (before i was even able to face them) so i'm left with no money, no SRV and no missions that i can do \o/ my available missions ATM are "deliver this stuff over 40 lightyears for 10k", which i can't do due to my 8 lightyears of fuel and no money to buy new fuel "mine 1 tonnes of osmium" which i can't do since i have NO clue how/where to do so or a surface mission, which i ALSO can't do because i don't have a surface vehicle so yeah... i'm literally unable to do *ANYTHING* at this point EDIT: about 8 hours later, i'm back to this situation AGAIN with a lot of difficulty i managed to scavenge some trash someone dropped and sold it on the black market that earned me about 10k credits, allowing me to re-buy my SRV after that i got wrecked over and over again until now i'm back to having 1000 cr, no SRV and a 35 cr loan \o/ :/ i mean, the missions i'm able to accept are essentially "Go out and do this battle in which you have a 99% chance of getting wrecked in seconds" or "transport this thing you can't afford to buy" or "go mine this thing you need to be a pro miner for where i have no clue where to even find this shit..." so again, 9 missions i'm not qualified for 3 surface missions i can't do because i have no SRV and 1 mission that's a cargo transport that requires me to purchase 2 tons of items that cost 1992 cr each (while i only have 1000 cr)

+Patrick Ellis actually... you will get stuff like multi crew ships and pilot customization and some other neat stuff Frontier have planned for this season. I do agree the business model is not optimal ;) however, look at it as a game with a built-in season pass. It might ease the pain in your wallet.

This looks a lot like a hugely improved X-Beyond game which I am a huge fan of, might give this a shot :D
@scottmanley9 жыл бұрын
+!AlCaN! It's beautiful and immersive with realistic scaled star systems, but X has a bunch of things that Elite doesn't have - NPC fleet management and Station building for example. X still has it's niche.
@Alcan49 жыл бұрын
+Scott Manley I havent looked into Elite as much but Station building and managing and micromanaging all the ships for them is one of the better parts X has to offer Yet love that you can land on planets a LOT, its a feature i always hoped X would implement ever since i got X1 and even up to X3 they never fulfilled that wish :D

Definitely disagree with using a hat for the vertical and horizontal thrusters. Hell, my 30 dollar Thrustmaster X has an analog control on the front of the thruster giving me an extra axis of control for maximum control then I just use two of the thumb buttons for the other direction.

To those saying it gets bland after about a days worth of play.. Go out there and create a game with over 400 billion systems(procedurly generated of course), planetary landing, first person combat, giant cities and hundreds of various jobs to do..... also do this in under a year... people should note that Star Citizen was announced as early as 2012. it's barely just coming out and yet I see no one noting how long it took here... These game developers such as FD are creating games with mechanics that haven't been used in most games... y'all lack patience. even for a game that's clearly still being improved day after day... COME ON SON!!!

I don't know if you have time to respond to questions, but I have a little extra money to burn this month and 'Horizons' is what I was planning to spend it on. I was also going to get a joystick to go with it, and I've been eyeballing Saitek's X-55. I guess what I'm wondering here is the X-55 (while very easy on the eyes), is rather expensive, and I'm not really what you'd call a hard core gamer. Would buying a set up like that be worth the cost for an amateur player like myself?

I really like that Elite doesn't need very powerful hardware unlike a lot of new games
@AthAthanasius9 жыл бұрын
+Alexander Bittner You're correct that the base/season 1 game doesn't. But the planetary stuff in Horizons /does/. You absolutely need a GPU capable of 'compute shaders', and from what I've been hearing it does seem that anything older than the nvidiz GTX 7xx series won't cut it for decent frame rate.
@JoeyBower9 жыл бұрын
+Ath Athanasius That's odd considering the 770 is basically a 680 in disguise. The only difference being the BIOS on the chip of course. I'm sure the high end 600 series cards will do just fine.
@Dark__Thoughts9 жыл бұрын
+Ath Athanasius If your GPU isn't a decade old it should handle compute shaders. I got a HD7870 which is neither new or was ever particularly good as a midrange card but it handles Horizons very well too. I guess the equivalent would be a GTX760 in that case but what's probably important is the VRam as well, a lot of the GPUs especially from nVidia had under 1GB VRam and I personally would suggest at least 2GB so that the GPU can hold enough for a quick terrain gen.

+IHaTeD2 Pretty much this. Covers what needs to be covered.

+Alexander Bittner the amount of new games that need powerful hardware to play are very few. This isn't like 2002 where you need the top PC to play almost any new release. Shit is made now to work on as wide of systems as possible.

I really want to like Elite because of its amazing UI and because I'm looking for a reason to get VR gear, but I can't help but feel really disappointed about the planets in Horizons - all of them are practically featureless, devoid of any colour or places of interest. Sure, there are a couple of quests, but just having to run into some barrels isn't going to win me over. The planets represent all that is bad about procedural generation: endless same-y looking places with nothing to do after having seen the three different quest types. And that in stark contrast with what some low budget indie games are doing (the obvious comparison being No Man's Sky) - the cynic in me fears that a reason to visit planets is going to be scheduled for next year's full price release.

I'm pissed off!!! i've just purchased the package off steam which includes Elite dangerous, Elite dangerous horizons, and elite dangerous commander with the understanding that Elite dangerous is required to play Horizons, only to watch this video and learn that Elite dangerous isn't required to play horizons!!! Why the fuck would steam be selling a package like this knowing full well Elite dangerous isn't required, dissapointment is an understatement!! i feel robbed! I'm getting nothing more for paying £38 than i would by just purchasing Horizons at £20. Nice vid btw, it's gonna help alot tomorrow when i first enter the galaxy. Man i feel robbed though!

Scott, soon as you identified the anaconda as a wanted npc I was like oh man you are soooooo dead lol
@pseudocoder789 жыл бұрын
+Edward Weagle He could have escaped but he didn't boost out quite fast enough initially, and just when it looked like he was going to make it anyway, he redirected power to shields (queue picard facepalm). He was almost out of laser range too. Doing that lowered his speed, bringing him squarely back into weapons range and making the mass lock problem worse. Rookie mistake!
@blackmanfu9 жыл бұрын
+pseudocoder78 Not really. He wouldn't have been able to outrun them anyway. Even with full pips to shields and boosting as often as his little ship would go, they were still gaining on him and well within laser range.

@nonyabiness48389 жыл бұрын
Almost got away! Hate it when that happens :) I think it's a little ridiculous that it's going to cost me another $45 to play the horizons "expansion" when I paid $75 for the original game. Unfortunately, they are going to have to come up with a LOT more than landing on objects with no atmosphere and rovers before I'll spend that kind of money on the same game.
@scottmanley9 жыл бұрын
+Nonya Biness You can always choose to wait until it goes on sale, you'll still get the new Ships and improvements to the core game, just no planets and multi crew ships. Of course, there'll be another Season update expected at the end of 2016......

Can any one tell me if the starting ship comes equipped with the ability to land on planets and deploy a rover or do you need to save and buy one since other videos done by other players lead me to believe you have to by the equipment for your ship? Also I am a big fan of games like euro truck simulation and the like so will this game appeal to me?
