Without a doubt they need to have thicker atmospheric worlds to explore with weather. And I agree, dangerous animals or even Flora would be a nice welcome for explorers. The pessimist in me says, colonization just sounds like taking the gameplay loop of fleet carriers and applying it to systems. The question is if they will be able to actually get the time vs reward balance correctly. Or if we will just get another cool feature in name which doesnt deliver in practice (as usual) The ever so small optimist in the back of my head says this would be a cool way to build out more content for the game. By enabling a whole galaxy of player created content. But then I remember that there isnt a persistent universe. So idk what truly new gameplay this enables. What are we truly getting beyond yet another resource grind??

Gas giant atmospheres are something I've been hoping for for a while (alongside comets). Headline features asside, I hope they improve existing odyssey content. Every time I hear about gas giants atmosphere I remember a "teaser" (which is probably more of a college graduate work, I don't remember) called The leviathan. Of course I'm not actually dreaming about hunting huge creatures in the gas giants atmosphere in Elite, but if the environment itself could be kinda like in that teaser it would be so cool. Some variants of "weather" and probably a goal to go there other than just sightseeing is collecting gas as a new form of resource... Probably, I dunno :p We already were inside maelstrom of the Titans and I think that is very close to what atmospheres of the giants can be like, so its not out the question from the game technical capabilities point of view

@YiorKha the maelstroms also had significant turbulence. Something like that to showcase how windy it would be, even in the upper atmosphere, would be really cool. Some form of resource extraction and bounty hunting.

Colonization will fundamentally change how we play the game… by giving us another grind loop! Because, clearly, hauling commodities for weeks to unlock a glorified nameplate on the map is revolutionary gameplay. Truly groundbreaking, like fleet carriers totally redefined the galaxy. Oh wait… Also, Obsidian Ant’s 2025: Elite Dangerous becomes Starfield, No Man’s Sky, and Kerbal Space Program all at once, with a side of Hogwarts Legacy.

Fleet carriers did severely mess up the system map.

Dear FDev, Here is how you make Elite Dangerous into the true space sim powerhouse, bring back people who have abandoned the game or aren't motivated to return, and improve player retention: - Ship interiors with gameplay loops tied into it. Frontier saying "you guys just think you want it" is such a cop out, gaslighting excuse. And Frontier apologists are even worse for defending it by asking "what will it add?". It just speaks to people's lack of expectation, ambition and innovation that they can't come up with some ways to enrich the experience by having it. Void Crew, a game that was clearly developed on a budget by a fresh-faced developer, managed it. Why can't Frontier use their imagination? - Unlockable multicrew allowing you to actually have meaningful interaction and task delegation that would enhance the RP experience (i.e. allow a crewmember to pilot the ship if you explicitly enable it). Multicrew was the first wildly disappointing feature release, just like everything else, it is on the cusp of greatness. They desperately need to properly harness existing systems, but instead they rework ones that could be left to cook a bit longer. - Atmospheric planets with weather systems. This is obviously on everyone's idealistic wishlists, I'm not even expecting this anytime soon, there are far more pressing matters. With Frontier's track record, would probably disappoint me too. - Better content accessibility that don't require you to take up Elite as a second job. Not respecting people's time is one of Elite's greatest setbacks. This must be properly addressed. The features they introduce that basically require an obligation to play to maintain are insulting. - More player owned capital ships and possibly asteroid stations. I saw parts of Frontier's discussions on colonisation it and it looked an awful lot like Frontier have learned nothing from past transgressions, to me. Both fleet carriers, and the incoming colonisation feature, both seem to have built in obligations to play the game like its a part time job. Nobody with any self respect wants this. - More variety e.g. more than just a single room on stations. - Expand off of space legs. Elite's second most disappointing feature release. Yet another "cusp of greatness" moment. Other things I mention here fold into this. - Better integration of ground to air combat and vice versa. If I recall correctly teasers and promotional materials for both Horizons and Odyssey insinuated that combined arms was going to be a huge step up for the game. Both times there's not even a breath of it in the game. - Give me better value for my time. Basically just a reiteration of a previous point. But it really is still one of Elite's biggest setbacks. - Allow mixed wings i.e. multicrew & ships but have size class limits (or just find other balacing methods or just allow private groups to enable it idk) to enhance the 'playing with friends' viability of the game; plus if we got better value for our time alongside that, then things like engineering and powerplay would be more accessible to people who have busier lives and player retention would improve. Realistically, what I am getting at is that many friend groups (including mine, which is partially why I mention it) have awkward numbers of people that would all love to participate together in meaningful ways, with people who might find enjoyment in all sorts of different roles. Most people who sit down for a couple of hours in the evening to play a game, don't want to play it if neither their playstyles nor lifestyles are catered for. By no means am I saying to make this game a casual game, but if a friend who isn't deep into the game usually wants to hop in my ship for some quick fun, allow us to make it a cool and unique experience for them. The choice at the moment being "shoot some turrets/missiles/whatever for me" or "fly around in a fighter that an inexperienced player is not fully equipped for" is not very conducive to having a cool or unique experience. Regards, Every player that has had zero motivation to put any more time into this game over the past few years.

I haven't played Elite for a few years now. I remember Frontier making a questionaire about engineering and general balance. I know that they changed some of the grind mechanics, more recently also the powerplay mechanics. Have there been any changes to weapon balance? Some weapons used to be almost universally useless (or extremely niche) while others were allaround the meta. What about engineering options? Some of them were just useless (more ammo on PD comes to mind as first) and some often felt "copy-pasted" from a module to module. Have they changed anything about that? General engineering balance? The thing where one healing laser could outheal the damage of several laser guns shooting the target.

I'd love for Frontier to show VR some love. I still haven't played any Odyssey content. I fly in VR and the switch to a very average looking shooter just isn't worth taking my headset off for. I've got an old 1080p monitor that's perfectly adequate for everything else I do. But it doesn't hold a candle to the VR experience. There are a whole new range of competing, reasonably priced, incredibly hi-res VR headsets coming on line next year. There are very few games that benefit anywhere near as much as a space sim from donning the headset. Frontier are really missing a trick here- the people buying those headsets have plenty of disposable income, they're not even going to blink at the price of new ships or skins. Get them interested in Elite and watch the cash roll in! Right now they're just turning up their noses at free money... Speaking of which, wouldn't this be a good time to revisit console support? Is it really so difficult to offer ED to those platforms too?
@daywalker6747Күн бұрын
I think the two main concerns about colonization are: 1. The distance. 10yl is way too short. I think 20 / 25 would be more suitable without exaggerating. 2. The inability to loose a controlled system. This can be easily exploited, locking paths or blockading regions. Fdev should reconsider at least the second one.

EVA's. Even if we don't get ship interiors, the possibilities for EVA's is endless. Imagine being out in the black and unable to repair a tear in your hull because you're out of AFMU's. You can't risk going to a planet so you hop out of your ship and move to the damaged spot, using an alternate mode of your arc cutter to repair your ship. If ship interiors do happen, EVA's have so many more possibilites on top of it. Boarding other ships, piracy, etc.

I'm very optimistic - not only ED is having the best time of its life, but Elite is a labour of love for D. Braben. I'm quite positive that Braben is using many of the resources their other games make to pump ED's development - even if ED is not as profitable as their other simulators, though definitely becoming one with pre-built ships. My point is - ED is in the good hands and on a right track. What we've seen in 2024 proves that they are more than capable of changing the game for the better and enriching the gameplay.

Colonisation paves the way for so much in Elite. This, I believe, is the first stage. We will by the looks of things be able to put down a variety of settlement types. This could then lead to the introduction of new settlement types and potentially move also into thicker atmospheres. Plus, it should be noted that on the new ships you can walk up the stairs to the doors. Again, this looks like the potential for the development of walking into and out of ships… and potentially around. The beta testing of colonisation is a great idea by fdev and they need to monitor assess and adjust the distances to expand and the materials. And once they are happy with this then more new features can be added. Exciting times.

One problem is that Elite Dangerous Odyssey is two games running one inside the other. When you're on foot you're loading the second game engine, hence all the performance issues across both and the difference in visual acuity. One major fix would be to pause development to refactor both engines into one, including a netcode revamp, in order to make the game expandable again. ED 1.0 was written to meet the timeline, not to meet the Kickstarter goals.
@DjVortex-w3 күн бұрын
@@ThePlayerOfGames What do you mean "second game engine"? The two modes are completely integrated. If you are sitting in your ship landed on a planet, and another player is on foot running around, you can see them in real time, exactly what they are doing. If there are eg. plants around, you can see them exactly as they are. Heck, you can even fly to a fleet carrier, close to a window, and look inside and see npcs and other players on-foot there. If you disembark while landed, you'll get exactly what you saw from inside the ship. You'll see the same rocks, the same plants, the same players, the same other ships. If the other player goes inside their ship, you'll see them there. You can shoot at their ship and it will register. Their ship can shoot at you, and it will register. It's the one and same environment, same engine, same assets, same game. There are no "two games in one", there are no "two game engines". The ONLY reason they have the fade-to-black transition when disembarking is that they didn't implement an actual disembarking animation. It's not that the engine doesn't support it, it's that they haven't implemented the animation. (I assume one of the main reasons is that there's a disconnect between the positioning of the ship's cockpit, and where you appear outside the ship when you disembark. It probably would require quite some modeling and logistics to have a full uninterrupted disembarking animation, requiring remodeling the insides of all existing ships.)
@Ebalosus2 күн бұрын
Or at least not treat it like it's abandoned. Like what role (if any) did on-foot gameplay factor into the Thargoid war? Where were the Horizons-esq "you have to disembark and use your SRV to collect macguffins" gameplay loops that tied into that storyline? Hell, all we got were Thargoid combat drones/skimmers, not actual on-foot soldiers to fight, which we probably won't ever get now.

I will not tire of saying it, if Frontier implements ship interiors and some mechanics related to this, even if it is in a paid DLC, if it is done well I would buy it with my eyes closed, it does not have to be a free update, but always and when it is at a reasonable price I am sure that many would pay it and this would inject even more money into Frontier than the things in the ARX store. The same if atmospheric planets with abundant plant and animal life were implemented, this are one of those few things that Elite lacks and that many of us would be happy to get them even if we have to pay for a DLC, that is, as long as it is not something half-assed like what happened with Oddyssey, it does not have to be a new game , Elite can benefit a lot from these types of updates without having to make a new game from scratch, surely the game engine would have to be updated to exceed the limits of the current one, but this is more viable than simply going for a totally new engine for a totally new game and that ending up being another disappointing disaster like Star Citizen, you don't have to go to such extremes to make Elite a much better and more complete game than SC.

A rework of the Odyssey space suit and handheld weapon modding should be done. Frontier reduced after 4 years the material grind to upgrade suits and weapons, but players still can't remove mods they don't like from their equipment. It's simply demotivating if you waste a mod slot for a thing that doesn't work as excepted and either have to live with it or to start the whole upgrade/mod loop again with a new weapon/suit. Also the whole system feels outdate. Weapons can have up to 4 general slots for mods. So if you mount a scope, you will lose a slot that you can also use for a bigger magazin or reduced recoil or one of the two forms of silencers. Even in the early 2000s game have had better mechanics like a slot reserved for gunsights, ect... IMHO they also should remove the Odyssey Engineers for the on foot equipment and simply add that function to each Pioneer Supply shop. There are 13 such engineers in the game, all with their own base - and each of that 13 bases use the same layout, same textures and feels very generic.It's even a windowless basement so there is no view to the outside world that would reduce that feeling. These engineer bases also lack a Bartender to barter the materials needed to mod the space suits and handheld weapons and no Pioneer Supply to unlock mod slots or buy new weapons. And the game doesn't have any tools that allows players to track the materials they need. Getting rid of these Engineers and their bases would be much easier and cheaper that to give each of them a new, unique base with Bartender and Pioneer Supply. Personally i don't understand why anyone at Frontier fought the upgrade/mod/engineer game mechanics were good in this state, especially after the engineering game mechanics of Horizions were strongly critizied by many players.

We witnessed Frontier letting Elite languish for years, while a lot of the money it generated went to several other game titles in Frontier Foundry. Those games flopped. The foundry was closed. Now so late in the game, they are doing CPR on a 10 year old game. VR support should have never been dropped. They stopped console support literally right after the Odyssey release. All this work went into power play, when only 5% of players even care about that. Frontier really should have listened to the players. The moderators in the forums crushed so many reasonable feedback threads, it's no wonder Frontier had no clue how pissed the players have been.

I could've lived without ship interiors, but since they told me I don't want them it became a requirement. More than that though I want to see them commit to design philosophies that are more honest and fair from the start, and give the player choice. I get it. Some people like to grind and that's cool. Go for it. However we should have a choice in that. I don't mind grinding credits. Just like grinding anything it can suck, but at least it's only one thing. But making me run around the effing galaxy to grind materials for upgrades? Id rather just not play at all. I like to use food analogies for this. When you buy a burger you place your order, give them money and in exchange they give you a burger. Transaction complete, both parties satisfied. You don't place an order and then run all over the place sourcing the meat, buns, toppings, condiments, and packaging. Then bring it all back to also give them money on top of it to get your burger. Give me the choice. Some people hate grinding credits, and that's okay. I personally hate grinding materials which is also okay. Give the player agency. Give them choice. If someone wants to farm the mats for engineering give them a discount. If someone like me would rather not let me just pay for it in credits. Nerfing the requirements is not a solution. The problem still exists they just lowered the bar which accomplishes nothing. The requirements could be nerfed down to 1 of each and I still don't want to do it. Just let me spend my credits. Nerfing is not fixing and that's what I would like to see change. But I have absolutely zero hopes of that ever happening. Which is a shame, because if they did people would return is droves.

For those who aren't really for ship interiors. I hear you. We could use game play improvements, optimization, depth, all that good stuff. I dont know if were in a position where we're just being whiney about the state of the game, or any of us have any real ideas as Players as to what those improvements would even look like or how wed best prefer to see them implemented. PvP could be nurtured better into newer players, so it isn't an up hill grind just to compete, and integrating players into open wont devolve into ganking thinning out our weakened player base. How ever in defense Ship Interiors, there's something it very well could being to FDev: Money. If players are given space to claim as their own, a home away from home like the ships kind of are, and they were given ample ways of personalizing the spaces, much like we do with the bobbles heads on the dash board, we'd dump our Arx into it. If anyone is unfamiliar with WarFrame, Implore you to look up how Digital Extremes and players treat the interior of their orbiter all with micro transaction sold props and color schemes. This is still understandably further from priority, but it isnt totally unbelievable.

The absolute minimum for ship interiors would be an airlock to hide the spawning of the players avatar - the same way the hangar lift hides the spawning of the players ship. Frontier didn't even bother to add an airlock to each ships in the last 10 years, so why should they start now? Adding interior to each ship is also a lot of work and would cause in many cases problems with guns and landing gear clipping into the interior. Maybe Frontier will relaunch Elite Dangerous some day and this time with ship interiors but looking at the last big DLC they probably also add the dumbed down upgrade & modding system from Odyssey to us it for ships too...
@4tonmike2 күн бұрын
They could get around the weapons clipping in by having the interior technically being a separate room. Or maybe just really cramped so that getting to and from the pilot seat would be fixed animations, though the larger ships probably wouldn't have that issue.
