Elite Dangerous: Rescuing refugees from a damaged station, 2017-12-14

Recorded in VR. I used a Beluga to rescue refugees from a station that was damaged by Thargoids. This is my first time actually using the Beluga for anything, so I was pleasantly surprised by its maneuverability, and thought I managed to steer and land it adequately, without getting stuck in the airlock. :) Actually overall, you can tell how much I've played this game by how quickly I don't wait for the UI to keep up with me. :)

@@eechee2979 BTW, the Dolphin is a great ship for begginer rescuer. It runs extremely cool, and has great jump range to actually get there.

I’ve got 120 hours or so in and still use landing assist most of the time. For the same reason that I use cruise control in my car when I drive even though I love driving. I can land myself when I want/need to, but landing assist is a nice to have for 95% of the time for me. Rather than detracting from the game, it actually adds to it for me.

They're periodic events where Thargoids attack a station. Players get people out, and gets repaired over time. You'd have to watch for these events or happen across it.

Well, you can go in without heat sinks and destroy your ship. Or in terms of actual consequential gameplay decisions, those happen over slower arcs in the game based on the play of all the players accumulating over time.

The system they are rescuing from is an invaded system. Right now the thargoid war is on an 8 front battle around the bubble. To counter the invasions there are many things to do that work on an overall “progress” bar. Other activities besides doing what you see here, include hunting Thargoids in the system, or bringing back research samples from Thargoids. If enough activities are done the invasion can be stopped, but will still have to go through a few week long recovery phase. We were winning the war a few months ago, but things have slowly been going the other direction. If enough player focus is not put into invaded systems, they will become thargoid controlled, in which humans will completely pull out of the system. Stations, planetary outpost, and anyone wanting to jump a carrier into the system will no longer function. @reallyidrathernot.134

I've done missions before where I just collect the salvage like escape pods and black boxes from the damaged station. Listening to the radio transmissions was quite harrowing, hearing people screaming, reports of fires burning out of control, calls for help, you really feel like everything's gone to shit.

this rescuing refugees mechanic got me thinking: what if you have the option to charge the refugees some fees to board your ship but in turn you'll receive a lot less rep/influence reward or even lose rep/influence

I like to think the passengers are in their own sealed, modular pod, which would explain how they quickly board/disembark your ship, they're handled like a cargo container by the station, but go to the passenger lounge instead

These happen periodically when there is thargoid incursions. After a while all the people can be evacuated then the station will be in a state of repair until players deliver enough materials, then it becomes fully functional again.
