High school discus sectors did not change the degree of angle to 39.25 degrees until 2005. These videos are obviously before that time when the High School sectors were 45 degrees....Just FYI to all the guys complaining about the sector lines. Some people have no idea what they are complaining about.

Carrot top didn't come in as a freshman until 2007 season. i know, my senior thrower beat him and others with a 189' throw. Alex threw 164 as a freshman at state. and the sectors were narrow

Great throws! My god i remember senior year, Jeremy Staat, Adam Stout (me), Chris DeMartini (all cal. throwers) ALL good...but i dont remember our technique that great! I was a senior (christ! in 1994 and weighed 178lbs...PR is 181'4") NEVER EVER got close to 200', DeMartini & Staat went on to be great athletes, i faded away...Also never had a coach! so that was a nice job for un-coached discus over 180'. Just me and a empty field 90% of the time with parking lot for ring.

I went into track for my first year ever as a freshman and i had no idea what a discus was and since then ive improved from 76 to almost 130 feet at the end of the season, and i love discus now.

@jakob mson Lose weight. Honestly that's the best way you can help yourself. I don't know how much you weigh but if you're 14 and over 250 then you have nothing to lose. My freshman year I weighed 260! I only threw 106'3" that year. Now, in my seniour year, I weight 205lbs. This past thursday I PR'd at 174'05" I credit my improvments to my weight loss, increase in flexibility and the speed I attained after I lost the weight!

That Alex kid has faster whip than anybody ive ever seen, even Olympians. I think if he was big he simply could not whip that fast. Physics just wouldnt work that way, unless he was pound for pound the strongest man alive

alex went on the Wisconsin, his best with the 2k was under 190 IIRC. he added some weight, no height improvement, and cut his hair shorter

Much agreed.... I have been wanting to look up how well he threw in college as well as his HS shotput distances. At our state meet in the early 80s we pulled a prank as the discus ring was beside the main field. During practice session, I threw, bellowing like a bull in heat at the top of my lungs followed a dozen team mates chearing at the top of their lungs. This turned the heads of many in the main field to see what the commotion was, including many coaches. This allowed them to see a discus landing well past meet records lines. Several coaches from different school came with tapes to measure its divot. As they were confirming the impact point, one coach went straight to where the discus came to rest and picked it up then called out "hey guys, its a girls discus" as he has seen the prank pulled years before. Funny thing is, it was still well short of Ryan's best throws

Hi guys, I through 189 my junior year and won stated by 36 feet over nearest compettior also won many TAC and AAU events. I did not compete my senior year where I concentrated on baseball. I became a good discus thrower once I stopped trying to over throw it. Keep your upper body as slow as possible and your lower body as quick as possible and fling that sucka. I love discus but am old man now 37...would love to be able to coach it one day.

@tylerneihoff1 Very impressive. I know of no men, few hs boys, and only a handful of hs girls who have thrown their weight (as girls throw 1k is is more common). When Andy Bloom threw 198 in HS he weighed around 220 (I think). Christine Yakubec threw 140 feet for Sacred Heart U weighing under 130 -- one of the best ratios I know of.

@tylerneihoff1 Technically if you did the math, he wouldn't be better than Ryan Crouser. Ryan Crouser is 6' 6" and throws 237'. According to my calculations, Alex Thompson is throwing 2.3 feet per inch of his height. On the other hand, Ryan Crouser is throwing 3 feet per inch. You're theory is invalid.

don't know about most of them, but Alex Thomson looked like that as a skinny freshman in 2007 Illinois state track meet when he threw like 164. 4th place Class A. my senior went 189-7 that year.

@tylerneihoff1 whoah whoah whoah. discus does not work that way. Alex's AMAZING whip, flexibility and speed is why he throws as far as he does. His weight is what he's used to throwing around. If he were to have Ryan Crousers weight or Sam Mattis' weight, he would NEVER throw as far as they could. Its his physique that allows him to do all this. The sheer fact that ryan crouser can throw WAYYY past his best PR, his superior discus form and far superior strength and explosion makes him better....

It wasn't 20ft, but Crouser did throw over his BW in HS. Weight itself is only correlative to throwing. It doesn't cause anything. If Alex Thompson weight more, there's no guarantee he'd throw further. My dad weighed 185 in HS and threw 200. He was #2 in the nation behind Michael Carter. People like that pop up every know and then. A coach I knew in HS threw 160 and only weight 135-140, for instance.

Ryan packs ALL of that. Which is why hands down he is the best high school discus thrower in the US. And shot put too for that matter...

you should be doing 170+ in the discus, and 50 to60 in the shot. a single event thrower best be ranked in top 20 in the nation. and grades too! coaches will treat less than elite throwers better if the grades tell them they will be eligible for all seasons

Only thrower Ive ever heard of able to Throw over his body weight, let alone 20 feet. The already great high school throwers throw 20-30 under theirs. If Thompson weighed 250, he could whip out a 270+
