My Grandad's cousin was recruited for the SS, he was awarded an Iron cross and survived the war. That's all i know unfortunately. He came to visit us in Australia but I was too young to remember meeting him, I wish I could chat with him now about his experience, he was quite a stand-up man apparently and remained adamantly loyal in his beliefs. Pretty good video by the way, a more well rounded and honest description than the common narrative which reduces them to simply "fanatics", with emphasis on the atrocities whilst downplaying anything which might present them in the slightest positive light.

I read that quite a few of them joined the French Foreign Legion after the war and fought communists in Vietnam. Also many went to South Africa and South America. One of my first girlfriends had a photograph of her grandfather in his SS uniform

Yep, lots of former german soldiers joined the french foreign legion, during the Indochina war they represented 70% of its manpower but very few of them were Waffen SS. The communists and the left (30 to 40% of the parliament at the time) made a huge scandal when they discovered there were SS in the FFL, claiming that the FFL and french army were refuge for thousands of war criminals. In fact, there were only a few dozens of SS in the FFL that managed to go through the recruiting process (anyone with the SS blood group tatoo on the arm or a scar where it was supposed to be was rejected). The FFL sacked most of them when the scandal became public. The germans served very well in Indochina and Algeria, most of them were killed in action but their unique skills and experience saved lots of young french soldiers. Some of their methods and lots of their chants are still in use in the FFL nowadays.

Back in the 1970s, my next-door neighbor was a ww2 German pow in Texas, and after the war, he came back to live in the US he knew I was a history teacher and ww2 collector so he used to tell me things about the German military during ww2 he told me that the SS used to be the military best dressed soldiers and they used to have better food than the regular army, but as the war progress the SS lower their recruiting standards the best of them was in the mid to early 1942, they even recruited SS soldiers from other occupied nations, he told me that every time the regular army Was in trouble or loosing a battle they always felt better knowing the SS were fighting next to them.

Yup, he told you the truth. Both of my grandfathers fought at the eastern front and both of em told me the exact same thing. The Waffen-SS was considered a "Feuerwehr" (fire fighters), they were deployed wherever the battle was fiercest and it was a huge relief for Wehrmacht units to know, W-SS units were on the way to assist them. Many Wehrmacht divisions had Waffen-SS regiments under their command, which were primarily deployed at the hot spots of battles.

Interestingly the commentator implied at one time during the formation of the Waffen SS that the training methods of British Commandos & US Rangers were adopted by the Waffen SS. This is misleading as the Waffen SS was formed at least 7 years before the British Commando units & at least 10 years before US Army Ranger units were formed.

They are so similar to us. It's sad to learn that German hatred stemmed from jealousy at how successful and economically capable they were/are. And how taken advantage of they were after WWI. Any country would've eventually revolted. I do believe this all could've been avoided. Allied aggression against Germany back then is very similar to US aggression against Russia now. People only want war if the media succeeds in lying to them.

There is a huge difference in men joining elite military units rather than regular units. I served 4 years in the Welsh Guards then unhappy with the poor professionalism in the field transferred to the Parachute Regiment. The difference was remarkable, but I knew that I found my home. Even from a child I was playing with guns and playing with toy soldiers and war games. I always say that irrespective of what time period that I was born in, I would have served in the military. Many join for careers and job opportunities but I joined due to my instincts of wanted to be in the military, and the best. I would have joined the SS had my circumstance been different.

Very nice. I wanted to join the US Marines but my dad wouldn’t let it happen…. When your basically relying on them for help still, because you’re just starting out your life as a respectable young man, but Obama’s president…. Yeah it’s not rocket science, I needed my dads help, and he used that hardcore to keep me from enlisting. Probably because his dad was mid 50’s Air Force and had some pretty brutal stories, but when you’re a brutal alpha 18 year old, in peak physical condition, it’s pretty hard to not be fucking angry with your morbidity obese minimum wage earning family keeping you down…. If I could do it all over agin, I would’ve gotten emancipated at 16, ran away and been a man. Instead now my life’s full of unfulfilled regret. As I’m not to old to join, but now I’m fucking disabled from the god damn job I ended up getting, when I would’ve been deployed to fight ISIS…. Sure, I could’ve come back in worse shape but there’s more pride being disabled by an IED for your country, and having to quit a real man’s job because even at 20-22 years old your body in peak physical shape couldn’t handle. I mean, going down inside septic tanks, after pulling out it’s 160 pound, grouted sealed lid, burried 2-6 feet deep in decomposed granite, and man handling fully loaded 1000+ pound dumpsters onto lift gates by yourself, and working out in open in conditions from wet and freezing to hot and heat stroking in a portopotty…. Yeah I’m fucking destroyed….. from parasites picked up from obvious reasons, to torn rotator cuffs, bulging disks, torn disks and even a tumor at T1, my life sucks…. I either get flat out addicted to pain pills, or suffer agonizing pain with a bitch wife and 5 year old daughter with autism because mom couldn’t give up the booze and ganja apparently while she was pregnant, but insists it runs in MY SIDE of the family…. Why am I saying all this? In ups I save even just one young man from this fucking shit….

All security apparatuses in the Third Reich, SS, SD, Sipo, Kripo and Gestapo, was under the umbrella of the Reich Security Main Office. (RSHA) Gestapo was transferred from Göring to Himmler in april 1934, as a "thank you" to Himmler ,since Himmler got rid of Göring worst opponent and rival, SA leader Ernst Röhm during 'The night of the Long knives'

My grandfather, and his brother were born in 1918 In Heidelberg, Germany. They immigrated to America, They became forest rangers, But during World War III, Hitler called all Germans back to Germany to fight for the Reich, my grandfather didn't want to go back, but his brother did. His brother volunteered for the SS (Das Reich) In America, my grandfather was in the middle of going to school, but after the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor, he joined the army as a military officer, He got sent over to France. I remember him telling me that he was always worried about facing his brother on the battlefield. As the war raged on the Von Wolven brothers fought through Europe until the war ended. Amazing they both stayed alive, my grandfather returned to America his brother stayed in Germany and opened up a bread shop, I guess he did pretty well, but he eventually returned to the United States, and became a fireman. My grandfather became a city manager in California. My grandfather didn't speak much about the war and his brother died before him in his 70s and my grandfather died at 96 years old. But I always thought it was interesting how you could be fighting for the Americans, and knowing that your brother was fighting in the elite forces of the SS and that you might come upon them. But isn't that the way brother against brother. Later on a Kar98, Iron cross 2nd class, Merrit Cross came 2nd class into my possession after my grandfather's death. I don't know if they belong to his brother, but I think they might. However, I think it would be extremely hard to smuggle a rifle out of Germany during war time but maybe. The rifle still has all the Reich stamps, swastika warbird print on the upper receiver with matching serial numbers. The third Reich has always been very interesting to me, even more interesting on how a corporal could take over a country. Anyways, great video! The music was amazing, it was refreshing to see some rare footage of the training regiment. Most videos you just see the black-and-white Battle scenes of German soldats, this was a truly beautiful video with great scenes, and well edited. Great narration!

Someone I met and got to talk to a lot was in the Der Fueher Regiment, in fact ended up n command of it at the outskirts of Moscow. I asked him why they weren't able to push through or at least surround Moscow. He told me they out ran their supplies. They knew they should have stopped and consolidated before then but orders were to keep going. He stated the recon battalion had gotten to the last tram stop from Moscow. But they were freezing, no warm clothes, hardly any food, and hardly any men left. HIs regiment only had 35 or so soldiers that made it through the campaign without becoming a casualty. With the counter attack by the Siberians they had no choice but to pull back. I asked if his unit were part of killing Jews. He stated they didn't have time for that and wouldnt have anyway. They did wipe out villages where "partisans" were either attacking from or getting aid from. He told me that was the policy of the Wehrmacht in general not just the Waffen-SS. Another thing I was told is that a lot of the Waffen- SS wanted to be taken from Himmler's control and become a defacto arm of the Wehrmacht. It is writtten that this individual was a commited Nazi until death due to his being in the group trying to get pensions for the Waffen- SS like the rest of the Wehrmacht got. He claimed he wasn't and looking back realizes how insane the whole philosophy seemed. Now a friend of mine who lived in Kiel has a grandmother who I met when I stayed with them. She was still a hardcore Nazi in the 1980's. I asked her about the Holocaust,. How could she still support Hitler after that? She stated it was all Himmler, she knew Hitler and he would never have done that. Her husband was a scientist. She had pictures of her and her husband with Hitler and other high German politicians. She was in total denial.

I do not think so. Your grandmother is right. Hitler never step foot in any concentration camp. Himmler said he would take care of it. Was not very popular. One man does not know everything that is going on. Since he was in command he is blamed for everything and everyone. Think about it for a minute. Two sides to every story winner tell his. The third reich was a big machine ran by many people. Not one person. I have read many books and even Hitler secretaries knew nothing. I believe they did not want to know and likewise to busy with other things. No one like Himmler at parties he was by himself. The death camps did not start till the end of the war at that time Hitler and others we too busy with the Russians.Hitler was loyal to all that help him get into power. Even though he was not fond of Himmler he stayed loyal to everyone that helped him whether he liked them or not.

The big difference to Allied soldiers was that German soldiers in the 1930s were not only highly trained, hard, tough and the best comrades. Unconditional cadaveric obedience was alien to them. Everyone was briefed on the situation at all times and trained to be a leader. This meant that even if an officer or non-commissioned officer was absent, the mission was never at risk. In addition, the leaders were given a largely free hand when carrying out an order. So goals were usually only given and the soldiers then implemented them at their own discretion.

During the first 2,3 years of the war the Waffen SS were more a bunch of fanatics with more Bravery than real jugdment of what War was all abaut. But from 1942 and until the end of the war, they Became a very Effective and Efficient Fighting Force became the Real First Special Forces Units in Military history. Their Training,Discipline and Fighting Spirit was second to none in any army during WW2. It can be said that if wasns't for the intervention of Waffen SS Panzerdivision and Panzergrenadier divisions, the Whermacht would had give up fighting much, much sonner.

Contrary to what was tought in many countries' military ... the Waffen SS trained it's officers to lead from the front . Not considering the cause they fought for, the Waffen SS had really advanced, quality training . They also created a bond (same thing you see when you look at the training of Easy company - 101 Airborne Div) by for example not allowing to close their lockers . It was considered thieves were no part of the Waffen SS .

For those that are interested, there is a movie about wwii that takes place in Poland if I remember correctly titled “Come and See”. It has English subtitles. I recommend it for those interested in some of what happened during WWII

My paternal grandmother was a German Jew and Holocaust survivor. She somehow managed to escape Germany in 1938 and made it to Canada. My father bought a BMW motorcycle that had a Windjammer SS fairing on it. He had to remove the SS decals on it because he didn’t want a German motorcycle with SS on it. I always found that kind of funny. Not ha, ha funny, but quirky funny.
