The music for this particular act of the ballet Elite Syncopations was written, apparently, by Scott Joplin, somewhere in 1902. It reminded me right away of the score for The Sting (Paul Newman, Robert Redford), by Marvin Hamlisch. It looks like Hamlisch found inspiration in Scott's sound, then made it his own. The score for The Sting is one of the finest and the most memorable in the history of movie making.

I guess all of you ballet dancers know that Kenneth MacMillan was a British ballet dancer and choreographer, and this dance "number" was arranged by him. I was confused because I'm not a ballet dancer, but I love Scott Joplin's piano rags and know them well. The title of this particular piece by Joplin is "Bethena" and not "Elite Syncopations." But I guess Mr. MacMillan was more taken by the title "Elite Syncopations" and so used it for the title of this dancing number. "Bethena" is actual a "concert waltz" by Joplin and not a rag. "Elite Syncopations" is a rag, and it's a "doozy"--I highly recommend the Nonesuch recordings by Joshua Rifkin of the Joplin rags--they are "the gold standard" for me, recordings that I've never tired of hearing. Cheers to one and all!

It is all by the Black American composer and pianist Scott Joplin ( 1868-1917)- he became famous for his ragtime compositions, of which he wrote over 100.

It's a musical beat structure that changes up the standard counting system for emphasis. You aren't really seeing syncopation in this video because it's in 3/4 time (waltz) A lot of the other numbers in this ballet are ragtime rythmn ...8 notes to the bar instead of the usually 3/4 or 4/4 time in which a lot of music, especially ballet, is written. Check out the RB's Hothouse Rag video - that's ragtime with a syncopated beat. Once you know what you are listening for, it's easy to hear it.
