This is a fantastic review. I'm looking to pick up my first smart trainer since I've recently picked up cycling and have been hating these early winter months. Was going to get a KICKR Core, but really now am changing my mind. This looks like am absolute fantastic deal for the price. I'm a novice, so a lot of the complaints of the unit probably are things that I won't notice as a newbie yet, and by the time I would, I'll have wanted to upgrade to something nicer. Plus this can get me on sufferfest and zwift.

Cheers. I'd love a variable speed dyno to do the Lama Lab test for me... but it'd have to apply torque just like a human to be valid testing. I suspect most of the issues we see with trainer accuracy (power, cadence, ERG smoothness/stability, etc) is due to 360 torque motors being used in the factory as the test machine.

Have seen quite a few videos of the Elite Suito having issues- particularly the knocking sound which seems to perk up after two to three rides. If I recall correctly the same problem had plagued some of the previous iterations of the Direto. I agree, it is great to have such a quality smart trainer for the price, but it may be good to find out what seem to be the production issues with the Suito (which hit retail just a few month ago) and how, if at all, they have sought to ensure that they are lurking around the corner with the Zumo. That said, this was a very helpful and informative video as usual

you can add Wahoo, Tacx and Saris there. Flywheels, belts, firmware, unsecured screws. Pretty much the case with almost all new direct trainers it seems so the only take away is to buy models in the market 6 months to a year already when teething is sorted. Probably as the smart trainer market matures we´ll see more refinement as standard.

Took delivery of one last week as my first direct drive trainer. Very happy and performing great so far, even happier after watching this review. Only slight concern is feels a little 'vibey' at higher outputs. Previous trainer was a tacx flow with no vibration at all,so not sure if this is normal, will continue to use and monitor.....

On the basis of this review I just went out and got one. I had a spare cassette, I have the tools and a front wheel riser (home made) so this is the model for me. Got it for £359 at Halfords. Just been through the set up, no issues, this video helped for sure. All connected up to my Garmin and TrainerRoad via an Ant+ dongle and about to do my first session.

Was saving for a KICKR core but this is very tempting, especially as I'd be able to pick it up for ~£320 (BC discount and work saving scheme). I'm basically after a direct drive trainer that has solid erg mode to replace my noisy dumb cyclops fluid unit. Power accuracy is not super important, but nice to have, as I have a 4iiii crank. This looks a solid option to me

Love these videos and this encouraged me to get my trainer calibrated and updated. Just one observation as it has caught me out with mine reading high. Not sure if this is just a direto issue but the offset number that the spin down gives you at the end needs to match the number writen on the bottom of the turbo upon building. If it's not matching then the belt needs tightening to ensure it's very accurate. Sure it was correct on this example but over time it can make a big difference.

Fantastic review - I just wish that every unit that they shipped had the same QA testing as the one sent to you. I bought one last Sunday but it simply did not work. Your review confirms that there was something majorly wrong with mine. It was stuck at max resistance no matter what I did. Resistance Level 1 on IOS App was like level 10 on my current trainer, resistance 16 was pretty much the same.. When I tried a spin down calibration it went from the 37KmH to 0 almost instantly whereas when you performed one it took a while to spin down. Unlike yours mine was no way 'spinny' - it needed 250watts+ (measured by my Quarq) for a cadence of 85rpm in my lowest gear (34x28). Support from Elite is practically non-existent, requiring 2 working days for an initial reply. After 4 days of faffing and no solution in sight I had run out of patience and returned it to Halfords for a refund.

I love the power comparison however could you also record/measure the noise level (in dB) generated by the trainer? Perhaps at different distances and include noise behind different materials etc. to simulate a wall/door. I understand that noise also comes from the drivetrain however I'm really interested in the noise. I live in a flat with 4 others in a tight neighbourhood and need a quiet trainer. Thanks!

Sound is too hard to quantify unless doing comparative tests against other trainers under the exact same conditions. As you've pointed out - it needs multiple points of measurements for each - it'd take many hours to produce a results that's not all that relevant. Floor type will also have a huge impact on the noise levels though vibration / etc.

Following a great review I purchased the Zumo prior to the Covid-19 lockdown. Its taken 1 week to get it correctly calibrated and the controllable zwift option working finally on BLE as ANT doesn’t seem to work on my laptop with windows 10🤷‍♂️. But my power reading on zwift is so sporadic that it moves +/- 50 watts on screen.......what am I doing wrong?! Arghhh

Would love if you could open it up and show some of the internals. In particular, what belt does it use and is it any different from the snapping-prone one that comes with the direto? It seems that it doesn't have the OTS, so calculates the power from flywheel acceleration? Curious if the stepper motor is any different to previous models as well.

I've one for about a month rode the 1st one fine till an update and things went awry.. one thing Shane didn't mention was the 1st iterations of these had issues - burning scent, noises; I think I got one anyhow, quick return to Halfords (a UK national car/bike shop) and they replaced no fuss. The current one is better out seems - the price is acceptable to me as 450 is quite a layout never mind a Neo.. either way = a good UK winter beater 👌

Hi Shane! When testing a trainer in ERG mode, do you always stick with the same gear combination for different trainers? What I found is that in ERG mode, the gear combination matters quite a bit, especially when the target power is low. On my Tacx NEO (OG), some gear combos are better in holding power close to the a wider range of power than others, while some are better at lower target power and some are better at higher target power.

Every trainer is different in ERG due to difference resistance units / internal gearing / capability.

Hi Shane, I've got mine last week, I've done a few rides on zwift and two good sessions on trainerroad, it's seems to be a good machine for this price. Just one thing I've seen what is a bit strange. The cadence reading on freewheeling is jumping to enormous numbers ( sometimes over 200rpm) especially after sprinting. The same is happening on trainerroad also. Did you see the same during your test or it's only issue on my unit ?

One for Elite Support. The cadence testing I do is over Titans Grove where a lot of trainers who estimate cadence really seem to drop the ball. For most accurate results I'd advise using a crank cadence sensor, or cadence from a power meter on the bike. Although this can disrupt the AppleTV and the Bluetooth connection limitations.

Just bought one of these today but the 10 speed cassette wouldn't fit properly even with the 1 spacer behind,tried 2 spacers still was lose.Took it back to halfords and they fitted a 3mm plus spacer that finally made the cassette tight. Are the elite free hubs longer? Seems very strange.

I have the original drivo, erg mode resistance is really slow to react, cadence is all over the place and the resistance randomly drops if you stamp down on the pedals (mainly erg mode but also sim mode) so really need to upgrade. Is this a decent upgrade? i'm not a power monster so not too bothered about max values and if i want the most realistic road feel i'll go outside so that isn't high on my list either. I just want something with accurate power and cadence, decent reactions in sim mode and good for sim mode workouts - this seems to tick those boxes?

Took the plunge and got myself one of these as a first smart trainer, coming from a dumb wheel on one. All built ok, firmware updated ok, first ride seemed good, totally different from my wheel on. Thought I would do an FTP test this morning but I am not sure if I am being stupid but I can't get it to hold the power. As in with zwift on either laptop or phone I expected it to hold the required watts as I pedaled but it doesn't and the watts fluctuate as I try to hold it myself. I have Erg mode switched on so no idea what I am doing wrong. As this is my first smart trainer I have no idea what to expect and the Elite forums don't have a Zumo section yet.

Which FTP test and with which software controlling it? The only FTP test that uses ERG will be a step test.

@@gplama Right ok so I was limited for time so I tried the 45 min one. I tried some playing around on the Elite training app and defiantly felt some resistance there . Also when I am riding in zwift I am pretty much in the highest gear and feel I am spinning out. I have ust looked and seen the ramp test, best give that a go. All good. I had all the same questions when I first started out with all this tech. Be sure to pair the trainer as both the 'Controllable Trainer' and 'Power Source' on Zwift. (cadence as well for the trifecta)

Pros: Likely more accurate and reliable power than what's reported from the trainer. Cons: Lag/delays adding another step to the ERG loop. Cost - If a smart trainer is sold as '% accurate' and it's not, and you have to use another power meter to make it accurate, that sucks (imo).

Shane I bought this and I am having one issue with it. I set a 29km route, rode it but it virtually had me doing it at about 60km as I did it in 33 minutes. On strava it reported it as 14km which from my rollers is an accurate distance that I would expect from myself. How can I change this that it gives me realistic trips with real distances? Speed feels as it should feel and the resistance as its based on mapped roads I know well.

The wheel size setting for the Zumo needs to be 83 or something pretty obscure. It's in the user manual which isn't nearby me to check at the moment.

Wow, wished I'd waited... Got my Direto X for 700€ last month, and I'm not really happy with it. The report of cadence is not really good, it can't hold ERG very good (tested with Ramp Test) and the flywheel is not true. It's a bit vibrating when doing high speed. But I'm hoping on firmware updates.

If you're ok with paying $ for something that may/may not be accurate and using another power meter to compensate for that... sure. I'm not comfortable with that. That could change at any time with an update... so stay tuned.

ERG speed change is a good indication of this. The Titans Grove test at the start pre-calibration is too. It's also very hard to quantify. It may also be different over ANT+, ANT+ FE-C, and Bluetooth. Then there's the issue of matching it with another reference point that's recording at only on 1Hz.

I've had my Zumo for just over a year and I love the thing. Question: Anyone else with the Zumo experience snapping/cracking sounding noises after they get off? Mine's been doing it since practically day 1 with no ill effects, just sounds very similar to hot metal in a car cooling down after a drive. The only other possible "complaint" I could have with it is when you're going up a 12% slope in 34/28 at 100% on Zwift, the resistance doesn't feel quite as smooth as the Drivo I ... but at 1/2 the price, I can hardly complain on that. It is so much quieter than the Drivo I, to the point to where I use the Zumo primarily over the Drivo even though the Drivo is technically a higher-end unit.

Would love to know how the ride feel compares to something I know like the Kickr - anyone? Appreciate the observations in this video on the light feel though. Of course it would be best to test ride the thing...but unfortunately it's a Halfords exclusive in the UK = staff look at you like you're an alien when you ask if you can test one out... Having already given a Neo and a Kickr a good spin I quickly realised I much prefer the latter, the big difference in feel was surprising. Both are a bit of a stretch financially though and the Zumo even has a £30 a month interest free option too. Always best to test ride, if only it were that simple with Halfords!

If you want that solid flywheel feel, then yep, the Kickr is the way to go. The CORE is pretty close given it's effectively a Kickr14/16/17 that's silent (with native thru-axle and Climb support too).

I've got one of these and the elite software is dreadful. I have had it since October but really only just started using it. I can't get the Spindown calibration to work. Any suggestions?

Disconnect everything from it. Power cycle it. Connect only a mobile phone to it via Bluetooth using their MyETraining app. Do the spindown from within that app only (after 10mins warm up). Once that's done you're good to use other software.

Anyone else had an issue with their Zumo destroying its drive belt? Mine has and Halfords have no stock so just offering a refund and Elite have refused to help saying you need to sort it out with Halfords, great trainer whilst it lasted but 3000Km is disappointing as are the replies from Halfords and Elite.

Question. Just bought a elite zumo. Checking firmware etc before. When it comes to calibration I get to step 3, run at the constant speed as it asks. After about 4/5 mins the trainer resistance becomes really high and impossible to pedal so I can’t complete the calibration. Any help will be appreciated 👍

However, it's nice to see Elite have continued to learn and develop their tech and not just implementing it at the premium end of the market too.

I've been very happy with my Direto, although I still find that it does really weird stuff in Zwift where returning from perhaps a -2% incline to a 0% - it will temporarily add way too much resistance. The problem appeared in about September 18, and I worked with support for a while to help test and fix the problem. It has certainly been 'mostly' fixed, but remnants are still there. Another aspect of the issue is where you are still on 0% incline, and it will add resistance a few seconds before the incline starts, presumably to minimise the perceived delay in responding. No belt/pulley issues for me though, which is great!

That just makes a resistance like you would be at 12%. But, your speed in-game will depend on the power you put on the pedals (like it does if you set the in-zwift resistance either on 0, 25, 50, 100%, or anything in-between). Not sure to be clear if you don't understand how it works, so : the difference between a 12% max HT and 20% max HT, if you ride a 20% uphill, is that you'll use probably a 36x17 gear with the 1st HT (like you would in a real 12% slope), while you'd use a 36x23 gear with the 2nd HT in this 20% slope (like you would in a real 20% slope). But if you push let's say 350w in both cases, you'll progress at the same speed. All this considering you were in the "100% realism" in the zwift parameters.

I have this turbo and have used it about 5 times in the first week of having it, all good, until today, I came to ride on it and I could smell a burning smell coming from the trainer and me struggling to put out 100watts when I can normally put out 200w for hours, first thing that comes to mind is that the belt is rubbing inside but I’m not sure, anyone got any ideas? ☹️
