The jack handle also doubled as an engine crank, there was a slot in the rear bumper that it fit into the crank pulley. Worked quite well actually when the battery went dead ! I had a '57 Dauphine until 1985 or so, loved the agile handling and comfortable ride. Also had a '61 Simca Aronde , a '62 Citroen ID 19 and a '73 Renault R 12 .My brother had a '63 Simca 1000 and my sister had a '59 Dauphine. The French built the best riding small economy cars for many years in my estimation.

Nice tour. Thank you. Radio and speakers are not OEM. What I find completely amazing about this car is that it is intact, and looking good. These cars rotted so badly that there are few examples remaining. Someone kept this garaged and away from sea salt and road salt. When you decided to sell it I urge you to seek a museum to buy it.

Bought a mint Dauphine in 1980 for $265. Had an "automatic" push-button transmission; which was really a manual trans actuated by solenoids to work the clutch/linkage/throttle. 56 true mpg with me only, dropping to 45 with 3 passengers! Made many trips from Gig Harbor to Seattle. Remember having difficulty finding tires for it at the time. Loved the car, though and this is a great vid. Thanks.

Agreed, the R10 produced 48-52 horsepower. I had many of them. Now, if you had an R8 Gordini engine... that baby put out a real 100 horsepower and a 5 speed box if I'm not mistaken. Its been a while. Your dauphine is really CLEAN!!! I have a 67 Caravelle R1133, a hardtop / convertible. Its a fun car. The last one I have seen on Long Island was like 25 years ago!! Keep em running!! :-)

Yes sir, we have an engine that came with another car, the engine is cammed and has had some major work done. It thumps so bad it shakes the garage lol, with the amount of stuff done to it we are estimating about 130 to 150 hp.

Hi Cody, thanks for the reply!! :-) Be careful on using it. I'm pretty sure the regular 325 or 330 transaxle will explode with that much power.

I remember my dad sweating and swearing over the engine one summer back in the '60s. He got rid of it after a few weeks.

I had a Dauphine in the 1960's. I remember one uncomplimentary comment was that the gearshift felt like stirring a abowl of pudding - true Also true unfortunately that not unlike the Corvair it could be dangerous to drive (in fact in Europe where they were very popular it was called "the widows car)". Radial tires on this car were a must and when a had new tires put on the car I, young , foolhardy and short of money had bias ply tires installed. That nearly cost me my life when trying to keep up with a Fiat on a curve in Spain. it still makes me shudder.

I have the chance to get a 61 Dauphine for $400, but will need to be restored. Engine and trans are in, but needs oil and gas plus a new battery to get it to start. Everything on the outside is stripped off and in the car, since they were going to have it painted. Should I go for it for $400? If you could get back with me on how you had yours restored and what are steps to get it back on the road would be appreciated. Thanks, Drew.
