I think the much funnier punchline is the reference to the planet of the film "avatar" that was basically created for 3d and lela having trouble navigating since having just 1 eye impedes depth perception

They even have audio tricks as jokes. My favorite example is when bender walks out of university and the robot mafia says "hey bender, over here!" From offscreen through the left speaker. Then when bender looks, nothing is there. Then you hear from the right speaker, "I mean over here"

My fav visual gag was S1 E1. Bender was disassembled and his parts were all lying on the floor. We see a shot of his arm attaching the other arm to his torso, THEN the OTHER arm attaching the FIRST arm to the torso. Followed by Fry saying “I don’t know how you did that!”

Disagree. The funniest visual gag of the series is when the gang are in the Head Museum’s Hall of Presidents, and Grover Cleveland’s head is there twice. (For anyone who doesn’t know, GC is the only President to serve two non consecutive terms in office)

Two i think of that go together in my mind. First in an early episode, bender has a binary nightmare and fry wakes him up asking whats wrong and he says "I thought i saw a 2" then in a much later episode when bender becomes religious and hes praying, its "100101001000110....2. Amen."

I was able to rewind the episode and rewatch it as many times as I wanted, the miracle of DVR!

Not even DVR. By the time this episode aired 90% of the people watching it live could pause and rewind it. That was very much a feature all cable and satellite providers had by this time. And I say 90%. Because while I had cable TV in my college dorm room, I did not have a cable box. So I could not pause and rewind live TV.

For me the best visual gag in the entire series was when Dr. Zoidberg was being interrogated in area 51 in the past. They offer him bunch of food and he is sad he doesn't have money to pay for the buffet. Few moments later when they tell it is free, in literally ONE FRAME OF ANIMATION, he slams against the glass. It happens so fast that your brain tricks you into thinking there was motion.

The DVD commentary told us that they cut out a long elaborate joke about doing a planet-scale pool shot to divert the garbage ball. They replaced it with the simple visual of Fry failing to push a button.

Not a visual one, but I always loved the running gag of Zoidberg shouting out “He’s horrible!” or “It’s hideous!” at times where the cast was reacting in shock to something. First time, I think, was when they first saw Qubert in the cloning tube. H.G. Blob also got in on the joke by being the one to yell it when the tentacles were attacking earth in The Beast With a Billion Backs.

Well the whole point of that bit is making fun of the James Cameron Avatar movie, hence the name of the planet being “Pandora” and the terrain of the planet and it being in 3D

My favorite bit is when Lur and ununduh are getting ready for a fancy ball and Lur is getting irritated that ununduh keeps messing with his tie and says "stop it, stop it! It's fine! *softly* i will destroy you!" 😂 or the honeymooners reference when he says "one of these days ununduh, one of these days, boom, bam! Sort-of. The drawings are still 2D. You simply use software to place them with anaglyph shadows. With red-cyan glasses on, your eyes think they are seeing parallax and see 2D drawing as shifted forward or backwards. The wider the red and blue shadows are, the closer they will appear. The thinner the shadows, the more they receed into the distance.
