Kiptum's death was possibly the worst blow to any sport of all time. If marathon was mainstream, it would be headlines for months. He was on the path to beak 2, and was running higher volume than any marathoner ever. double whammy that his coach died too. all that knowledge gone.

whether Kipchoge wins or not, he has already solidified himself as the greatest marathon runner, imo.

One of greatest. If not for Kiptum's deaths and Sammy Wanjiru's too, who knows that they may have achieved - they're up there for me too. Haile Gebrselassie definitely too, who is being forgotten too quickly - if he had been in the Vapourflys, he might well have done something like Kipchoge too on the marathon track.
@rossfripp450317 күн бұрын
@@JohnDoe-xk1dvI disagree. Nobody, not even Gebreselassie, has had the dominance Kipchoge has enjoyed over such a long period of time. Haile can definitely lay claim to one of the greatest distance runners ever.... But greatest MARATHON runner? Kipchoge.

He's most likely not winning anything else, but the fact that he and Bekele are going to compete against each other is enough to watch and enjoy this race.
@DonLee198016 күн бұрын
@@JohnDoe-xk1dv you attributing Kiptum and his death is like saying a young kid beating one of Michael Phelps world records, but passed away, immediately puts Michael Phelps greatness in jeopardy. There is no guarantee that Kiptum could win nobody in the modern era has won back to back Olympic golds, let alone 10 straight marathons over 5-6 years. He was racing with people who also could wear similar shoes. Nobody has ever been that dominant.
@nichokituku479916 күн бұрын
@@DonLee1980 healthy Kiptum could not be beaten by the current marathoners.no one was near him. In less than a year ago he raced against the favorite to win the Olympics ( except Kipchoge) and none could even come closer. Am talking about Tamirat, Kipruto, Gabriel Gaye, Mutiso, Bekele none could keep up with Kiptum's explosive speed over second half.

Kenya is making a big decision that i admire . This shows that they are willing to take risks. Kipchoge has not bin at his best this year and also last year.but despite this they are still giving this man who is the greatest marathoner of all time a chance at making Olympic history to become the first man ever to win 3 Olympic golds over the marathon. Many other nations would have just said “ no he isn’t good enough now” which is fair considering is recent form in Boston and Tokyo all be it he did still win the Berlin marathon but Kenya have showed that they are willing to take risks and sometimes a gamble can be what gets you a big victory across all aspects of life. A Kipchoge v Bekele marathon would be incredible - but I make neither of them as favourites in Paris now, although one or both may be podium contenders. Whoever wins it will have a last mile kick/sprint possibility ,which these two old war dogs probably don't have anymore in the same way. Let battle commence though - should be an incredible career ending indeed though, if both make the start line 👌

I am going to say this again about Paris spécifiquement et the Olympique in general. First, I understand that there are some who have missused and appropreated patriotism to push people to do bad things that have costs millions of lives. Ok, Kyena has to score more points that Ethiopia and they hope all other nations in their best races That used to be a simple us against them that every Keyan and Ethiopian too to heart. No more. There are several nations fighting to be the number one proving and training grounds in middle and distance running. That means that in any given event the longest distance running nations want to pull a Jamaica or one of those USA, USA, USA and win Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Kyena has put a coach in the field of three. I hope Ethiopia plays the same hand. Two experience runners with nothing to gain and nothing to lose are going to run tactical runs that can bring home all the medals to their nation. Gentlemen start your engines cuz its is gonna be a controlled, strategic race for the title of the long and middle distance leader of the world.
