For the controversy around 7:20 I would say that I didn't actually see him pull, instead I saw his hand go up and then sideways, into the FDJ rider's side, in order to make sure that the rider knew he was there are if he kept going they both would likely go down, so it may have helped them both stay in the race.

The FDJ rider has a name: Ramon van Sinkeldam. The defending champion that year. He himself said Mathieu fairly beat him. Part of the problem is the bend in the finishing straight.

But back on topic: Sinkeldam would have pushed MvdP into the barriers if Mathieu hadn't signaled him with his hand. Pure self preservation. No controversy at the time and no controversy now. Such a shame you feel like you need to smudge this 'typical' great MvdP victory. What makes him unique is his enormous capacity to recover during a race. So even when he has attacked, he's still able to win a sprint a little later. A one in a generation talent with a kind heart and a good moral compass. Enjoy him while you still can.

Crazy thing is that despite everything MVDP has done, he's still only 29. He has 10 more years, 5 of which in peak form, to amaze us even more. The Netherlands is in the golden era of sporting athletes with Jeffrey Herlings, Max Verstappen, MVDP, Femke Bol, van Gerwen etc. It's good to be alive as a Dutch sportsfan!

I'm pretty sure Mathieu Van Der Poel just signaled the FDJ rider that he'd pass, he didn't actually pull the FDJ rider, but simply alerted the FDJ rider that he'd pass from the left side, and he needed to alert the FDJ rider since he was pretty close to the barrier

That is incorrect. Wout even though he is older used to be smaller and less muscular than Mathieu van der Poel until they hit their twenties. He grew a bit taller and became a lot stronger. So Wout changed a lot over the years.

The touch on the sprint he did was amazingly gentile, he didn't even push. The other guy never complained about it. I love the documentary, but I'm sure Mathieu shocked the world as well when he almost won his first World Championships in 2019 and when he knocked himself out of the Tokyo mountain bike race. And the way he won the Tour de France stage that got him the yellow jersey by going early which no one realised is definitely missing. However: great video, thank you very much! So for me, it should be 10 (and counting, of course).

@patricks5232 Wout is also a killer. He has won so much. But he is just a little less able on steep climbs, where he tends to lose most on MvdP. Also in the sprint, Wout is excellent but sadly for him MvdP can match that when it matters it seems. So MvdP is just even a slightly bigger talent than Wout is, but it is still so close. Thank God, we have seen how boring it gets without Wout like this first half of the season.

I'm not a world class athlete in any respect but I usually avrage 140 watts in a race and can sprint short distance at 500 watts. Seeing his avrage 1300 watts blew me away. Ok that said, the issue you pointed out with pushing the other cyclist, to me it looked as if FDJ was trying to hit his front wheel and make him crash and he prevented it.
